Arguments against cosmetic costs have never made any sense to me. They seem to smack of entitlement or just plain immaturity. The game is free, and you even get free access to new heroes the following season. Looked at objectively, it’s a pretty sweet deal. The game has tons of legit things to criticize, but its business model isn’t one of them.
Skins that are too expensive discourage players from partaking in events, taking away the feeling of participation, making the game feel more bland.
I’m not one to buy skins either, but that’s mostly because they’re too darn expensive.

Guys, nobody is opening this thread, reading the post, and coming to the sudden realization that “wow, other games exist?” They know. They weren’t born yesterday. They probably have tons of other games but they prefer to play OW. I spend $20/month on gamepass, but barely play any games because I enjoy OW and that’s all I really have time to play.
I’m sorry that cosmetics are expensive, but it’s unlikely the industry will change at this point. In fact it will probably get worse. If you can’t enjoy a game for the fun of playing the game, if you need cosmetics for the game to be enjoyable for you rather than just seeing them as superfluous bonus content, then that’s really unfortunate, and you should perhaps assess why that is.
I saw that and was kind of excited, but I don’t care for Tekken, I had a friend play Code Vein and didn’t recommend it, I didn’t like God Eater 2 so didn’t think I’d care for 3, and I don’t have time for a JRPG (plus I’m still kind of miffed they blatantly lied about Patty,) and don’t really need the Pac-Man museum.
I loved Katamari Damacy, but I also just platinumed the .hack// remaster a few months ago, so don’t need to rebuy it either, and I already own One Piece Odyssey so the coupon doesn’t mean anything.
I think being able to get Katamari Damacy and .hack// alone for $10 would be a good deal, and if any of the other stuff looks interesting that makes it even better. But sadly the whole bundle for me boils down to “Do you want a remaster for a game you already beat a decade ago for $10?” and it’s just not a great deal personally.
I do recommend people check out .hack// though. That series is great (as long as you ignore everything after G.U.)
But the skin prices are in line with the larger industry, and blizzard won’t read this post.
So, why do you care what someone else spends their money on?
To all you “Why do you care what someone spends their money on?” types…
Because the success or failure of this premium bundle, battle pass price gouging has knock on effects for the entire gaming industry. Gamers are being nickel and dimed for everything they’re worth right now and these predatory pricing schemes need to fail in order for it not to get even worse than it is now. People are paying many multiples of the cost of entire games just for ephemeral in-game merch. The mobile games market is even worse with the majority of titles being pure pay-to-win hamster wheels using casino psychology to ensnare players for years into being pay pigs.
In a way this is bigger than just “hurr durr mythic skin iz shiny”. Every purchase or non-purchase is a vote for or against a nightmare future for gaming. Personally I vote against.
You know what else people can spend 40$?! In my country of origin a pensioner’s income is 150USD!
why don’t we all open a gofundme and start donating to the poor grandmas and grandpas that can barely get any food?
Maybe stop caring what others buy?
The amount of cope with some people defending $40 skin bundles is the same energy as people pushing NFTs.
If someone wants to explain why OW2 cosmetics and bundles are much more expensive and overpriced than they need to, it’s good to mention examples of other games that are better priced.
Just because someone mention that there’s other games that’s better priced doesn’t mean that the person is trying to advertise them. They could just be comparing other games to show how overpriced OW2 is and why they dislike it.
I’ve played both Fortnite and Valorant. Valorant just like OW2 cosmetics are insanely overpriced. However just because one company are doing something bad doesn’t mean it’s suddenly morally right to do the same thing.
Outside of the prices, the OW2 monetization is even more questionable than the F2P competition in certain areas.
Here’s a list of some of some of the questionable monetization choices Blizzard has made since OW2.
- All purchase options not showing in shop: While the option to buy individual items in the game were soon added to the game after people questioned the legality of the discounted bundles in season 1, these options are intentionally hidden in the shop and you have to go to the hero gallery to show the option to buy individual OW2 items. Also if you want to use “credits” the option doesn’t either show in the shop.
- Vaulted OW1 loot box skins: In OW2 season 2, 21 of some of the fan favorite “loot box” skins were vaulted saying “currently unavailable” in the description of them. Now these skins are showing 1 after 1 as Amazon Prime and PS+ exclusive FOMOs that previously always were available.
- Story missions walled behind $15 bundle: The story missions are walled in a $15 bundle that includes PVP stuff that can’t be used in the PVE If you only want the story missions, there’s no other way of getting them than through the bundle.
- Not refunding players who bought Captain Torb: The Captain Torb is a $19 store skin that later got available for free as a Twitch drop. Players who previously bought the skin didn’t get any coin refund for it. At the same time other players who bought the Owl Guardian Mercy skin got refunded when it became available on Twitch Prime.
Of the F2P competative competition that I’ve played, Fortnite still has the best monetization.
We can compare OW2 to Fortnite that’s also a F2P game. Their cosmetics are cheaper and if you decide to buy one of the bigger V-bucks packs you get even better cosmetics/$ value.
(Values converted from eur to usd)
Fortnite:
- BP - Only has to be bought once and are renewable for free through the V-bucks you earned in your last season BP.
- More expensive skins goes for (1400-1600 V-bucks skins) $7.2 -$8.2 if you buy the $70 V-bucks pack
- Refunds players with V-bucks if something they’ve bought before, in the future is available for free.
OW2:
- Have to renew the BP for 1000 coins every season ($10)
- Legendary skins goes for (1900 coins) $17.22 if you buy the $105 bundle
- Only refunds players with coins if they bought the cosmetics within a certain time frame (People who bought the Mercy Guardian skin a month before it was available as a Twitch drop got refunded).
I don’t have any issue with the BP having to be renewed for money every season, but then I also think store cosmetics and Ultimate Battle Pass bundles should be much cheaper than they currently are in OW2.
- Bandwagon Fallacy
- Refer to my former post
I tried Doom. Didn’t like it. So I did in fact waste money on that game. If I buy cosmetics in a game I like, is it really a waste?
You still don’t understand I’m making fun of you for caring so much about how people spend their money.
Not everyone has the same priorities as you. To some people, the price point is worth it, to others, it’s not.
Most games I’m interested in I buy Day One or shortly after. This doesn’t keep me from getting Overwatch skins or bundles from time to time .
Pleasure is pleasure and as long as one manages their spendings with a certain parsimony (that is different for each individual and depends on their lifestyle and interests), there is no issue.
Some of the games you listed I either bought Day One or gave it a try with the Xbox Game Pass subscription. I didn’t like Doom Eternal and Rainbox Six Siege was my go-to game before Overwatch got released…
I’m not saying playing old games is bad but I doubt most gamers stick to it for long, especially solo games.
Anyways, since we’re promoting old games sold at a discount. Alan Wake II is getting releases on October 27th and if you are curious, like I am, to get familiar with the franchise, the original game in its “Remastered” version is available for 8 bucks in the Playstation Store (PS4 + PS5 version).
Gameplay and graphics are old (game from 2012) but maybe some of you will like that game (I did and I’m looking forward to the sequel at the end of the month).
Please explain anywhere in the OP that “explains why OW2 cosmetics and bundles are much more expensive and overpriced than they need to” lol
All I see is an advertisement for other games that are $40 or less, no explanation of anything
The title of his post is “Some other things you can spend $40 or less on”. With $40 he’s referencing the “Ultimate Battle Pass Bundle” and mean that there’s games for the same or similar price you can get.
Where’s the explanation you keep talking about tho
You said OP explained why OW2 cosmetics/bundles are too expensive/overpriced
I don’t see an explanation, just an advertisement of games
You can also spend $40 on food. That’s not an explanation of anything
You should include Satisfactory in there. It’s a beautiful game, and very relaxing!
Also, I completely agree on that last statement.
