I think it’s cool that we get more feminine men in the game but the design is a little too on the nose for me (The hair, color, the abs, etc).
Taric was kind of a joke character with his over the top flamboyance, but this character looks like they’ve tried too hard to make Life Weaver “relevant”.
Yeah… I love that the character is Pansexual, but the whole design looks like it revolves around that specifically…
Like, an average pansexual wouldn’t look like the Life Weaver nor would an average Thai person looks like that.
Strip away Sym (another Vishkar) of her attire, then you have an average Indian lady.
Strip away Life Weaver’s attire, then you get an overly brightly dyed haired, ripped Thai femboy.
These types of characters are either a hit or a miss, and I think this design is leaning towards the latter…
Respectfully, in a game where you can play a talking gorilla, a cyborg ninja that summons a dragon, or a radioactive australian… why would you want a character that looks like the ‘average’?
And in all fairness, while not all queer men look like Life Weaver does, there is no denying that there are some queer men who do and I don’t see what’s wrong with celebrating that. I mean, it’s a fantastical game set in the future, so why can’t there be some fantastical designs too?
I love the introduction of plants. I would’ve loved a druid-like fantasy character who CAN still be pansexual for those needing representation?? But he looks so basic and boring. Where’s the magic? The feminine features?
Nothing screams Thai either. If it was a culturally appropriate design it would maybe save him. But hes just a pretty boy with a flower.
That’s my problems with the character, a good character is well designed AND they have traits that define them, a poorly designed character is defined by their traits. He screams of the later.
We haven’t even seen his character in motion yet or how his kit works, so there’s still parts to his design we haven’t seen. Who’s to say he doesn’t have magical, druid-like casting with his abilities? If they were to overload him with vines and leaves and the like, his silhouette would be extremely complicated. Plus, he might have legendary skins that fit that attire.
Yes, and I’ll try my best to write it in an objective manner as possible.
All those characters embodies something of their identity.
Winston is a primate from moon.
Genji is a Japanese ninja.
D.VA is a Korean pop star gamer.
Junkrat (and any other Junkers) are from Australia which is mostly covered in deserts.
etc
The only thing that makes them more “unique” is the additional backstory that’s given to them.
Winston is able to talk and is a scientist.
Most of Genji’s body is cyborg.
D.VA rides on a Mech robot.
Junkers are radioactive.
etc
The problem I see in Life Weaver is that rather than focusing on what actually embodies Thai culture (like the blossom symbol, which I think is fantastic) he is a walking stereotype that screams “hey look, I’m a pansexual character who happens to be Thai”.
That… is unsettling to me cuz it’s either saying that’s the best thing Thai culture has to offer or the whole reasoning behind this character’s inclusion is solely on the fact that he’s queer.
Soldier and Tracer’s sexuality is a nice addition to their lores, but creating an entire character to “celebrate” queer men and slapping on the “oh and he’s Thai” label is kind of weird and nonsensical…
Well before OW2 we had OW1 and the universe was a huge part of the game. Its not just a f2p FPS. We now know they are shifting away from that to a more casual f2p fortnite-like fps. Which isnt a flex.
Again, I think we’re jumping ahead when we still know very little about Life Weaver yet. All we have is small bits of information based on a leak, which says he is a biochemical scientist of some sort, he’s a support hero, he’s Thai and is pansexual. We have yet to see his Hero Backstory, to hear his voice lines, see anything other than a screenshot of his character model and bits about his abilities based on leaks. We have yet to learn anything about him.
I think you’re also missing that there’s more to his design that embodies Thai culture. He’s clearly wearing a modern chong kben, and (forgive me if I’m mistaken) a pakama around his waist, so he has traditional garb on. But even then, why should him being Thai be the key part of his design, rather than what his kit, lore and personality represent? Because from where I stand, I can see immediately that he’s flirty character with pinache, that he has something to do with plant-based tech, and that he’s a light-hearted and fun hero.
So really, the only thing here that people are seemingly upset about is that he has long hair and pink accents and that he is flamboyant. And like, that’s fine, you don’t have to like a character design that’s flamboyant, but don’t get yourself twisted about it all by convincing yourself it’s for any other reason.
You never know, he might be a “joke” character too. Or at least they could potentially give him an exaggerated vain personality and emphasize his narcissism. If they did that, he would be more relatable than most of the cast.
Because his whole design didn’t even needed to be Thai.
His entire design (not lore, I dunno how many times I need to reinforce this) is absolutely over the top for the sake of being over the top.
It’s like seeing Valentines Hanzo but as an actual hero.
Here, let me address again the whole jist of this character’s design:
I disagree.
It’s great to have inclusion in a video game, a medium that lets you spread good image of a culture/nationality without having to go visit there in person.
The problem I have with this character is that his design is solely based on “wokeism” (which I use lightly) and is there for the sake of putting a pansexual character in a game.
That’s a fair point, but I don’t think that’s people’s problem. The problem is that it’s forced so Blizzard can say ‘look how inclusive we are by including a very loud .001% of the population in our character design,’ instead of doing what they’ve done brilliantly in the past, which is highlight different cultures across the globe.
