So I bought a mic

And I’m terrified to use it.
I don’t know what to expect.
I know it’s no big deal, but I’m so scared to even say “hello.” :C

Once you start, you’ll get used to it. Trust me. I started using a mic for gaming when I was 12 (squeaker), and have since then, and it’s not bad at all. Yeah, at first I was nervous, but once I realized no one cares about who I am, then hey, no biggie.

I know the feeling, lol.

I can never say “hello” or “hey team” it’s too nerve wrecking

But usually after i say something mundane like, “they probably have shatter,” or “they just used trans so we should dragon blade next fight” and realize nobody really cares, it’s super easy to talk the rest of my game session.

try beer, to open you up a bit, or just have everything ready, and just listen…and when something important is about to happen, just say it.

I’m the complete other way. As soon as game starts I’m talking to teammates, asking where they’re from, what they like to play, complimenting their English (EU servers) and discussing battle plans. Some people never pipe up and are happy to listen to callouts or maybe once a game call out a key piece of information like “Reaper flank he has ult.” I don’t mind quieting down if someone else wants to take the lead as it means I can focus more on what I’m doing, but having even one shotcaller makes a world of difference, especially when they’re giving encouragement like “winnable,” “huge,” or “omg man nice shot are you a smurf? Thanks for the carry.” Not all of us mic users are monsters. Some of us just want to help people have fun and win games. If someone’s giving you abuse, mute and move on and keep the good vibes flowing. You can do it!

It lowers the barrier and becomes less intimidating if you are playing with friends that uses mic.

I don’t like talking to people online either. Start by just makings calls, like callout an enemy flank, a countdown to emp, a combo of ultimates etc. To me it doesn’t even feel like talking to someone ya know? Might also work for you.

I’d stay out of voice chat entirely

I stopped joining voice chat about a year ago and have been 900x happier since.

Just start with call outs or simple strategy suggestions. You don’t have to ask everyone how their day is going or anything like that.

I’m not a talker(not shy, just introvert), but I’ll definitely do call outs and all, and reply if someone says “hello”. I also don’t really like my voice as I have troubles keeping it clear.
Once I hear Moira “hello ?”
me : “hi”
Moira “ooh, sexy voice”
I laughed and liked the fact someone can appreciate my voice, def gave me some confidence.

It takes a while for it to become natural. Just try and say a few words every game and don’t take anything too seriously if anyone calls you out.

Overtime you build up that confidence and it becomes second nature. I’d suggest doing simple things like saying “I have my ult”

Start by enabling push-to-talk. This gives you the ability to say only what you want to be heard, and can buy you time to think about the next thing you want to say. I think you will discover that most people don’t like saying much, and if a conversation starts it will occur naturally and you have no responsibility to join in if you don’t want to. Being a heavy mic user myself, I respect players who do the bare minimal/essential callouts or just say “hey” at the beginning of the match to show that they’re friendly teammates.

Try finding a chill custom game server and striking up a conversation there. It might ease the intimidation factor.

I’ll be able to try that beer in a few months! Until then, I’ll stick to my Red Bull.

Although… I’m not sure if the caffeine will help in calming my nerves.

Thank you for your advice though!

You don’t really have to make conversation if you don’t want to, you can start off just calling out hero positions, saying when you have ult, if an enemy is low health, etc etc. If you feel a bit nervous some people find a voice changer helps them feel a bit more confident, too

Eventually you ll get called trash and stuff, but you just gotta work through it.

You don’t have to initiate a convo with anyone, I use the mic for important callouts exclusively, unless I happen to click with someone meme-wise.

I have many microphones and use them all for voiceover recording in different situations. Every time I try to speak up in-game, I get nervous and just type instead. It’s weird. There is no solution.

Are you afraid to talk to people in person also? Unless you are really shy, I don’t understand how you could be afraid to speak.
