So how many of you call IRL bow users snipers?

Because I never once have referred to an archer as a sniper. Completely different just like Hanzo and Widow.

I’m going to be honest with you. Outside half watching the Olympics every few years, I completely forget that bows exist as an actual weapon outside video games.

Yeah Hanzo isn’t a sniper anymore.

He’s a sniper by trait not by weapon

Well, long before the invention of scopes and auto-mated firing tools, you know what they had? Bows. And you know what they did? Shoot things from far off with eery precision. You know what they call that now? Sniping.

Nope. But still watching someone hit a target from long range with a bow is pretty amazing though.

The reason why they call Hanzo a sniper is because of his ability to one shot many characters in a headshot from far away.

A sniper is generally a class of attacker. One who uses a weapon with low rate of fire but high damage and is primarily useful at long to medium ranges.

I refer to Hanzo as a sniper because he is optimal using his weapon out of reach of the enemy and taking single potshots to take down enemies not behind cover.

Most games I play , sniping, refers to the attack style, not the weapon used. TF2’s “sniper” has a bow type weapon. Tenchu , an older stealth game used the bow as your primary long range engagement weapon.

One shot, one kill is sniping in my experience.

Generally, characters that can inflict a large amount of damage from a very far distance are perceived as snipers.

Is Hanzo as much of a sniper as Widowmaker? Absolutely not. He has much less consistency when it comes to damaging/killing from range.

But he definitely can kill someone from far away. With the increase in his projectile speed, he has a little more consistency - still PRETTY bad consistency, but more so than previously.

I’ve heard the term sniper used for archers before in medieval fantasy settings, and I believe I’ve heard in before in military history, but I’m not as sure about that.

Equipping the lucksman doesn’t make the Sniper not a sniper.
