I have no idea what waking the dragon is supposed to be a euphemism for can’t lie. I just want to take things casually, not trying to make people’s game experience worse. Feel like if anyone has seen it, Brandito’s statement on him coming back to OW was “I just wanna be a casual high masters/low gm Doom who likes rollouts”. Same with me, although I’ve dropped a bit lower to high diamond because queue times.
To me that isn’t smurfing.
That is just taking your foot off the try hard peddle and settling into a new chilled rank.
I get called out for smurfing a fair amount of the time.
I’m more or less the same way.
Where are these friends that you supposedly couldn’t group with that started this thread?
And that is an issue. Abusive chat.
I am a level 50 gold player… I have been called a smurf a handful of times. But where I am it is just hilarious to get.
Probably one of the best compliments one can receive.
Exactly. They see the lvl 50, 5 hours on Zarya and above 60% win rate and immediately I am an issue…
Laughable at best.
Between 3300 and 3800.
I mean I’ve just gone into a game and someone has dm’d me saying “You fell off lol”.
Wouldn’t be surprised if 222 is largely to blame for an increase in smurfing.
Smurfs are to blame for an increase in smurfing. It’s a concious decision.
This is a truthful statement.
Doesn’t mean they are a net overall negative thing.
Yes some are scummy, but some are just players chilling and not try harding and thus “stuck” in a lower rank.
It should’ve theoretically reduced smurfing as people wouldn’t need a separate account to play other heroes, outside their main role. I honestly just put it down to crap balancing decisions creating metas that cause 90% of the roster to be throw picks at gm. Need metas that allow for more variety at high ranks, I guess 2/2/2 causes that variety to be reduced.
Yeah and the downright obnoxious queue times 3.5+.
Anything that distorts the competitive ranked experience is a negative, whether it’s plucking a Plat tank to stick in a Diamond game or a Masters Widow queuing on a Plat account. The difference is one is a conscious decision.
I’m a low plat tank. Play with diamond players all the time.
But someone like Ninetails, who is playing a rank or 2 below, playing on a off-role, or not their main heroes, vibing. Give me more of them in my games, on either side.
They are many times over less likely to get all teary eye’d if you lose. And if you talk to them and much more likely to give good advice on how to improve little things.
Honestly, I would barely play ranked if there was a good way to play scrims on a regular basis, and a tournament system.
It’s called collateral damage.
Funny, my experience as a formerly gold tank was that the team felt handicapped by having a lower ranked tank on their team, as it was a handicap. They didn’t want me there and I didn’t want to be there. That’s not an enjoyable experience. You can also ask any t500 streamer who gets stuck with a Masters or Diamond player in their games, or gets stuck in a low ranked lobby while they’re trying to queue for actual t500 games.
Deliberately adding difficulty to the ranked experience isn’t enjoyable for most, and your continued defense of it means you approve of such things, your protests aside.
Well, that is doesn’t sound fun.
Mine comes from joining groups and then doing my thing… a few of these players liked my style and dragged me into their games.
Talking of streamers, was watching one an hour ago. Said something interesting… If you are below diamond (ie in the performance based SR range) smurfs are irrelevant because you. Diamond only become an issue slowing down your climb once you are in diamond.
Most GM players will get a smurf account and in a few games be chilling in diamond.
Was an interesting point. I remember ML7 doing a new account and placing 2700… he was doing nothing wrong, only took 4 games to be into diamond. So didn’t “ruin” anything for anyone.
(yes I am aware some are scummy and derank the account after placing, but as I said, ban at throwing games).
The developers have said something similar to this. That the system quickly figures out the proper rank.
I can’t find the quote.
But it doesn’t seem like they believe it is as big of an issue as the players seem to believe.
