Skill caps do not exist

Ok so this is more of a lesson in terminology, but I’ve seen a few posts that use the term skill cap in the the following definition:

a way of describing how difficult it is to play the hero
this is actually the definition of a skill floor.

while the actual definition of a skill cap is:

the amount of skill it takes to get the most potential out of that hero.

Now skill floors can be low and make a character easy to pick up. But as far as skill caps are concerned I’ve always denied their existence. I’ve always believed the potential of a character is based off the person playing it. I’ve used DSPStanky as an example before, but its too perfect for this subject. Most people thought lucio was a low skill cap hero before as all he has to do is exist to make him effective. Then Stanky came along and changed the way people played the hero. People began to realize that lucio’s movement and self heal made him a 1v1 monster as well as a great stall hero.

so please when referring to how easy it is to pick up heroes, use “skill floor” ok.

you are asking a community that still have issues with caliing deflect reflect, to use another term. lets solve the smaller things first

Deflect and reflect mean the same thing though

The cap and floor of anything are opposites! That’s whats hilariously frustrating lol

Skill cap is the point in which a player, no matter how skilled, cannot get any better because they are limited by the built in mechanics that prevent them from getting better.

actually no those two words dont
Deflect is to change the course of an object aside from a straight line
while reflect is to throw something back

Ok so tell me what someone would have to do to be the best mercy in the world

We’ll play a game lol

Be better then all the other Mercy’s playing.

I consider skillcap as a measure of how difficult it is to master that hero.

There’s a limit to how good you can be at Bastion. Not so much for Tracer.

Mastering some thing doesn’t mean you reach it’s maximum potential , per the definition of skill caps.

For example there are plenty of people who have mastered boxing, but there is only one best boxer in the world, hence he has a higher skill cap since he is using his abilities to their highest potential

But see, that’s your definition of a what a skill ceiling is. Mine is different. Just like how people have different perceptions of what a skill floor is.

It’s impossible to say this is what it truly is because everyone defines them differently.

I think people are using skill cap in place of skill ceiling. Skill ceiling can be adjusted by skill but skill cap cannot be moved by skill, it can only be adjusted by the developers.

A zenyatta can only do x amount of damage by himself and the game will not allow him to go higher then that number no matter how much skill he has, therefore he is capped in damage x amount. Same with healing, he can only do x amount of healing by himself no matter what his skill is.
