Skill based Sr needs to protect you from losses

When you perform exceptionally well you shouldn’t lose SR just because your teammates failed to play well, or flamed and created a toxic cancer mass for you to deal with. If this game was actually skill based SR It would be SOOOO much more fun.

On a small scale it kinda does that… winning or losing contributes the most but the adjustment can vary quite wildly. If you’re a GM playing in bronze and actually play like a GM you’ll get a hefty boost but if you lose you’ll lose almost no SR.

For example I’m a silver player but had a long stent of bad luck and lost 300sr; due to that, when I win I gain more SR than when I lose (21 vs 25). This isn’t much but it does protect you somewhat as long as you continue to perform above the norm for that rank.

It’s a team based game.

Invidual skill does make quite alot in this game, though it’s not the main focus.

In the end you still lost, if you manage to pull out a draw then congratulations neither of the teams are penalized.
If you were to perform exceptionally well in a solo game but still lose then it’s also normal to lose skill points, so it’s not really surprising if it’s the same in a team based game which doesn’t really focus on individual skill.

I’m talking about 0 points lost, 0 when you lose a game but perform exceptionally well. Because it is far too often that games are lost because of terrible players. Or legit trolls. My favorite. Joining a game and having a moira who refused to heal. Not a moira who most did dps, I mean a moira who basically disabled left click. Sombra had more healing on our team.

Didn’t matter how well i played and the ranked system doesn’t protect that. It’s less about skill and more about luck. Because if you can climb 200 SR then your skill matters more.

I’m a masters player, but the grind of trying to deal with 1 bad teammate in a place where my performance could be the best ever, but 1 troll or 1 afk is super discouraging. Why try to climb in a system that has no protections against garbage play like this.

This is a hard one to define. Win conditions could include literally feeding your brains out as a ‘bait/distract’ type resource sink that opens things for your team. Another win condition is spawncamping, or literally running away from spawn campers.

You wouldn’t believe the actual win conditions that get reported as sabotage because the brainpower is too outside for normies. That’s my life in <500 btw.

Personally I think k/d per healing received, normalized by hero/health pool (but not rank) is by far the best single indicator of performance, because it decouples from arbitrary stats/medals, maps, comps, teammates, and shows how you carry your own micro and some elements of macro.

Like if I’m going 27:1 without a healer or tank in open comp, but we lose because no one can sustain, perhaps I lost the match out of selfish/stubbornly not solving the lack of tank/obj conditions.

And a majority of low elo matches are those ‘kill the bastion/turret’ conditions - people get bored of it and stop trying for that. Move higher up and it’s ‘solve the pharah or hammond’ type conditions, which become skill checks in their own right. The issue in 2020 (without a reset) is it’s less of a skill check and more of a give-a-darn check. People in my sr (<500) absolutely have the skill to deal and solve, but stubbornly don’t care because they’re chasing stats/pbsr.

Which is why at the end of the day SR is a meaningless indicator of skill and should be renamed “ladder ability”, “care factor”, etc. It’s so decoupled from raw talent (k/d like i said is much better for that). And that’s before factoring all the other ladder corruption and disruptive accnts.

If you play well every game, it won’t matter because you will still climb quickly.

The idea would be great but would be hard to implement in different ranks

Thats sorta how it works already.

Sorry to deliver this, but it means you dont perform exceptionally well.

I have to respectfully disagree. In very niche circumstances, I’ve seen SR go up/down by 2 or even incredibly high like 50. But in the vast majority of cases, SR adjusts in the mid to low 20 range without any significant differences. You could absolutely dominate the match, but the system could skill determine that you sucked and deserve -27 SR. And I’ll be honest, there have been games where I acknowledge I got hard carried and I didn’t have to do anything, yet the system STILL gave me around +30 SR for the win. The performance based SR adjustment sucks pretty hard imo, and to be quite honest, with the many MANY other issues with comp, I’ve stopped taking competitive mode seriously. It’s only a way to get gold weapons for me at this point.

You cant base the game on stats - which is the only other way i can think of to gauge how well you are playing. Otherwise players would play just to boost stats rather than team play and try to win the game. Ultimately if a player is better than another, they will win more when teamed up with the same pool of players.

Stats don’t work for several reasons. Someone always has gold on your team. So just because you have gold does not mean you are playing well. Sometimes it just means you had 3 eliminations instead of 2. Also if you put up say a lot of damage and played “exceptionally well” in your opinion, it doesn’t necessarily mean you played well. For example, if your supports were being harassed the entire game and you did nothing to stop it then you played poorly regardless of how much damage you put up.

Above Diamond you don’t have that, I had many games in Plat where my loss was around 10 SR. Doesn’t matter when you lose more games than you win thanks to bad teams.

I think there is pbsr for that in lower than diamond, if you play well and lose bcoz your tanks throw and feed only then you will lose like 15 SR and meanwhile those tanks lost 35 sr and more likely you will not get matched with them again.

Just a general disclaimer to everyone in this thread: Please keep in mind that you are not matched based on your SR but are matched based on your MMR.
