I find the whole story behind the horizon lunar colony to be quite an interesting one. A space mission involving the study of life on the moon to see if humans are able to colonize it fully, is a more unique aspect of Overwatch beyond terrorist organizations and global conflicts.
Looking back at the emails and logs on the colony it references a few things.
- All hands report to airlock E-35: Winston- 2:19pm
- What happened? Are you ok…: Zhang- 2:20pm
- I need help at airlock E-35 Immediately. Emergancy malfunction with the airlock, need everyone to come at once, situation is critical. This is not a drill.: Winston- 2:22pm
- Can someone check the noise in the break room? It’s past bedtime: Patel- 8:50pm
- It was Simon and Hypatia causing trouble. I tell you, Simon has been an absolute handful lately. I mean, more than usual. I’m confining him to his room and we can figure out what to do with him in the morning.: Nevsky- 9:12pm
Here are the email titles:
- Nevsky: Concerns about Simon’s Behavior
- Yoshida: Missing Tools - Please return them
- Flores: Strange noises in the ventilation system
From all this information we can possibly conclude that this “emergency” was the fate of the scientists. Another evidence behind that is during the horizon announcement trailer, when Winston said “they vanished”, the camera paned out through the airlock doors with a loud alarm blaring.
Now I know I listed the messages in order of their time, however I do believe the message talking about Simon happened the day before the incident. In the emails there is no listing of the malfunction because the scientists couldn’t react fast enough due to the severity of the situation.
The email titles reference Hammond crawling through the vents. I do not think he was the one who stole the tools because he would have no need too. He only started construction on his getaway pod when he learned of winstions plan after the animal’s revolt. No, I believe Simon was the one who started stealing tools and could be why he was punished in the past. Simon clearly doesn’t respect people like how Winston does.
Here is my more extreme view on things. I believe that Dr. Winston didn’t write those emergency messages. I think it was Simon trying to lure the scientists to an airlock which he rigged to eject them with the stolen tools. This could mean that Dr. Winston didn’t fall for the trick and that he could be still alive.
I am not 100% sure what animal simon is, I do know that he has to be a social animal because of him doing things with this Hypatia creature. Simon is either a gorilla, chimp, or some other social primate. The name Simon is a hebrew name meaning to hear, listen, obey, reputation, specifically “the listener”. The name is often associated with smart people and sophistication. I would assume that Simon would be similar to Sombra in that he is a saboteur, and that perhaps he uses sounds or analysis somehow. Perhaps he used the cameras on the colony to track the humans.
Another crazy theory I have is that Simon was guided by a rogue omnic ai who also dislikes humans greatly. Perhaps this omnic is what planted the seed of hatred within Simon and perhaps was behind the emergancy message from Dr. Winston’s account.
