Silence wave is ruining chat/multiplayer experience

Obviously, it has gotten worse recently, many players I know and see in the lobby are 0’d very fast for things they say JUST ABOVE innocent banter.
This isn’t fun at all, it’s ruining the chat experience and it’s disabling important comms between teams. 14 days is also insane, people create alt accounts or stop playing for this reason.
I’ve seen people get silenced for promoting their ttv which is one of the only ways to get recognized from OW, while every other game allows it. The chat is becoming less and less funny as the days go by, I have been silenced before (non-slur) so I know exactly what it feels like; it makes players who enjoy MUTUAL banter wanna stay quiet after the first message sent, worrying that even the most benign or innocent thing can get them another silence/ban.

TLDR; Whatever chat reviews were happening months ago, please bring that back while keeping the current system only for slurs/malicious links. People’s different humor made the matches a lot more vivid.

i always say EZ every time i loose, is this a bannable offense?

if they do twitch dot tv / whatever, then it’s a link,

there’s no clear sign to differentiate between a “normal” link and a “malicious” link.

I do the same, leaves the other team mad and confused.

yes it is and i’ve seen countless posts saying how they “only” say “gg ez” or “ez” and got a mute, or ban if they’ve got in trouble enough

it’s bannable so maybe you shouldn’t lol

Just the day before yesterday a mercy main put that three letter acronym in chat (directed at me) all because i was doing my job as a dive character diving them.

I reported and nothing happened

As someone with a history of depression and had those thoughts in the past, i think the banning system isnt strict enough

Also i got called fat by a lw :frowning:

ive been doing it so long and not even a report warning, makes me think most ban complaining post are straight up lying

they are

i do thing the surge in them is odd and that it might be a coincidence but from what i’ve seen in the past, they all lie or are angry that “ez” can get you banned which i agree… but it’s still toxic

only when i loose tho

that doesn’t change anything tho lol

It may just be a volume thing. Like if only one person reports you in X amount of games, it may not chat ban you due to it not being an insult or toxic action

Players won’t bother communicating, when everything is reportable and their bans are measured by sheer number of reports and the appeals are responded with AI chatbot
I just block all communications and rely on ping. Should suffice on gameplay level.
Socializing? No one cares in 2025

Just remember, name-calling is not “banter”.

I was on a team recently with a beginner Genji. He was struggling to navigate the map, and was blown away instantly whenever someone noticed him. He must have died like 16 times, and only got one legit kill.

But guess what, nobody called him slurs or told him to uninstall. Players should not be blamed for the matchmaking.

We managed to win, and GG to Genji for trying until the end, against all odds. The match is funny from his perspective: AT77CZ

Do I think there are accidental or incidental bans happening? Sure. A tiny percentage. I think the bigger issue is that players are learning that what they take to be ‘fun trash talk’ is actually just nasty and mean spirited, and players are putting their foot down and saying ‘this guy who calls people slurs or is just toxic in general shouldn’t be allowed to talk to people, if this is the way they engage’, and getting mad about it. I’d rather everyone on my team be silenced than have to put up with a nasty toxic person, 100%. I play this game for hours a day, every day, and have never gotten a chat ban or warning because…I’m not toxic? I’m not mean? I don’t feel the need to be nasty to people, whether I win or lose? I don’t think that’s just a ‘part of gaming’, you don’t have to be mean to have fun, and if you do…well, maybe find a game that tolerates you doing that to their playerbase.

I have friends who, while not toxic, are somewhat obnoxious in chat and even THEY have never been chat banned. So like…I think this is user-error here.

I never claimed it was, although this shouldn’t factor into a longterm silence/ban either (strictly in my opinion), only about 3 years ago the culture in the game when you met a friend in the opposite team was to trashtalk them and that’s the banter I’m pinpointing to, though not specifically to people a player may know.

I’m really not sure what this has to do with my thread, I personally think a player struggling (genuinely not throwing) shouldn’t ever be talked down on. But it was a nice watch, thank you for sharing!
