But I have huge concerns this will just cause casuals to play comp purely to earn these new cosmetics, ruining the experience for everyone.
instead of making the rewards only earnable playing comp and having them only earnable at the end of the season, instead make drives a season long ‘event’ that can be progressed by playing any mode so everyone can earn them.
Also have them fit the theme of the season, so this season could have been an egyptian themed border around your hero and a sandy effect around the players battletag
I don’t understand the need to push people into the competitive game mode when they don’t want to. What’s wrong with letting quick play players earn them as well?
How would more people in comp “ruin the experience?” All this means is faster queue times for you because these people will still be of your skill level if they get in your match.
The same way some people only play comp just to earn gold/jade weapons
They arent there for the right reasons
A minuscule change of faster queue times is not worth the reduced match quality of people just being there to farm rewards
End of season is already a ****show, we dont need more reason for people to not care and just queue for selfish reasons
We already have enough people who have the ideology of ‘i dont care im just here for golden guns’ we dont need to add ‘i dont care im just here to earn the signature border’
This is only a hinderance for lowest of the lower ranked players. Anyone skilled enough to be in the higher ranks will be good enough and motivated enough to win matches, since they actually have something to lose at that point.
Even in the lowest ranks, people will just be mass reported for throwing games just to finish as many matches as possible (if that’s how the rewards are even earned).
This ship sailed as soon as they introduced new competitive point weapon variants. Before people would have been happy with just getting the gold for their mains, now we’re getting new versions yearly.
like you can argue these shouldn’t exist either, but they do, so the borders being the same thing is a moot point.
Drives only go up with ones per the dev blog “When you win matches, you’ll earn Drive Score and progress toward the next Checkpoint.” so even these casuals have the incentive to want to win.
And we have all seen how positive received forcing people to ‘win’ has been
Remember when you had to win 9 arcade games to get your lootboxes in ow1? Now Why did they change that to complete 18 games, wins count double
Remember when weeklies were win x games, win y games of arcade, win z games while queued for all roles? Why is it now its complete x,y,z games, win count as double
Every seasonal event is complete games
Why is it that for comp you get comp points for both winning and losing
Why is it that if you win you get 3/10 towards your bonus, if you lose you still get 1 point
Its almost like forcing people to only win ends badly or something
Because right now, competitive players just play the mode BECAUSE it is competitive. For the gameplay, the competitiveness of it.
If they add rewards, casual players will join it, just to get the reward, even though they don’t care about their rank, or the competitiveness of the game. They just play for the reward. That makes the mode worse, not better.
I don’t understand what your issue is? Your initial post makes it seem like you’re mad about casuals being in comp at all. This is understandable when it’s about comp points and all they have to do is play, so they half-donkey it just to complete placements. All the other things are for casual or hyper-casual modes, so it makes sense to not demand wins.
But for Drives you need to win, so what’s the problem? That they’ll get toxic? No different from the dorks who already populate comp whose only self worth comes from their rank.
Do you merely not want casuals in your presence, in the holy temple of Overwatch Ranked? Should they get evaluated by a sports psychologist to gauge they have the right amount of competitive spirit before being allowed in?
That’s a very big assumption. People can, just as easily, take the game mode seriously simply because it is ranked.
Most people probably don’t play ranked because it’s a huge commitment for very little reward. All this does is incentivizes them to finally give it a good try.
