Sigma Triggering for players suffering from Mental illness

I was advised to leave feedback here for the new Tank hero Sigma. He feels very unsettling to play for someone like myself who suffers from a mental illness. The constant anguish and frustration in his voice interactions are triggering and can bring on some symptoms that are present in my illness.

This poster on Reddit sums up my un-easy feelings better than I can.

" I have paranoid schizophrenia similar to what I believe is intended with the new hero Sigma. My thoughts on the character and his backstory aside, I think his kit is cool and I really want to try it out at some point. Somewhat ironically I can’t play him in his current state as Blizzard has added a lot of disjointed background noise to his abilities and ultimate, which triggers some pretty substantial panic attacks/delusions for me. I was recommended on a different forum to listen to the voice lines a bunch of times to acclimate myself to them but it hasn’t worked so far.

I am really hoping that Blizzard could add some sort of toggle for the background noise, as I don’t think they intended with the design to exclude anyone, especially people who suffer from the same or similar diseases as the character, from playing the him. I haven’t been able to find a clear sound clip from the ultimate voice line when he plays on the other team (or when a different person on your team is playing him) but if there’s a similar effect when he ults I don’t think I’ll be able to play at all when he comes out. "

I like the concept of Sigma in general , however I wasn’t prepared for the triggering effects.

Thanks
Me.

I am confused… What is the triggering effect? Like… The music?

someone ā€œadvisedā€ you to come to the forums and leave another ā€œsigma is bad for players with mental illnessā€ post? lmao

There will always be something that someone will suffer from.
Unless a lot of people are complaining about the same thing, it is very unlikely something to be changed.

They get flashbacks kinda like wolverine

maybe i dont know, im not that ill

The post is asking for a toggle for Sigma’s background noises because they’re potentially triggering for people with mental illness. Read the post before you respond about something entirely different.

I swear there’s voices when he uses his abilities, so I think it might be that.

As far as I’m aware, there’s been no other thread made about the potentially triggering effects of the background noise when playing Sigma, so OP’s post is entirely justified.

I still always get bamboozled and think a Reaper just Shadow Stepped near me.

I’ll support this guy just because the random voice lines are annoying and block out the sound of enemy foot steps and abilities, the game has way too much audio clutter as it is.

God yes. I can’t think of any other hero with equal amounts of extra noise

huh… so kinda like epilepsy but auditory… first of all i’m sorry that you’re going through this and if anyone from blizzard reads this they’ll fix it for ya
so let’s upvote it so it gets more attention

I like the noises as it add some creepynes to the surprising tame in-game character however if it does trigger people then I guess Blizzard could make it a thing you could turn off

The thought of someone snapping and being manipulated to another’s end disturbs me greatly… and I love it! Seriously, if we worried about every plot device, trait, or character, ā€œtriggeringā€ someone, the world of writing would be incredibly boring.

This was literally copied from Reddit even the ā€œI was advised to post hereā€. I would have taken this more serious if you would have attempted to put things in your own words but everything is near verbatim.
Also adjusting a few items in sound will solve this issue. It’s like me saying bc I was in the military Soldier 76 gives me PTSD. My options would be to not play, turn things down, or seek more help with my issues bc if something is triggering me it’s not the game it’s something going on in my own head.

Subtitles. Use them.

Past few years everyone is offended by everything even if it has a solution. My son has mental health issues and Sigma is his favorite. I would never try to tell a company to change a character that has mental issues bc it triggers my son, he would just not play and like you said I would have to get him more help if a video game was setting him off anyway.

In other words, if I play Sigma against you you’ll be completely disabled? Hard counter!

I really don’t understand the situation at hand, but I can help upvote this for blizzard to see. Hope you’re doing fine.

Perhaps we still need more data to determine the following factors that might trigger the mentioned medical condition…

is it the music?
or the voice lines?
maybe the exposed feet?
could be the 2-2-2 composition?

I’m wondering how a person who plays a first person shooter game full of death and bombs and destruction isn’t being triggered by any of those things, but sigma voiceline of all things is triggering.
