Shadow/penalty queue?

So I’m sure everyone has gone on inexplicable downswings. You know, the one’s where you get a neverending stream of throwers, griefers, trolls, infighting and of course every 5th game has a leaver. You lose 300-400 SR and then suddenly it all ends and you are allowed to climb again by just playing your A-game like you always do. Then right as you’re about to hit the next rank you get “tested” with a series of absolute trash teams and nothing but tilted players suddenly.

Some games have been known to put players in special queue’s as a sort of penalty box. GTA5 does this with cheaters, where you will only be matched up with other cheaters. A lot of them didnt even know it was happening at the time. Is there something similar in place with Overwatch? It just makes no sense that you can go on a nice winstreak and then have an equal an opposite losing streak. Nobody is going to win 100% of their games, but this isnt equilibrium finding itself.

A normal winrate is around 53% once you reach peak rank and then you basically win/lose every other game, because thats where you belong. If you can win 10 games in a row there’s no way you suddenly got bad and lose 10 games in a row for balance. You’d lose like 2 or 3 maybe but then you’d continue to climb until you started the win/loss balance back to back.

I should also mention when i switch accounts the games return to normal, even though i’m same SR on several. It’s like this one account of mine just keeps getting targeted by hidden MMR for forced losses.

Yes, this happens.

Had technical difficulties, switched accounts cause my other account was banned for an hour. Fixed my issues (f-int discord). Then played like 10 games. (Bob account).

Went back to my main recovering from the tech difficulties. Had not 1 but 2 leavers on my team. (1 came back but the. Another person left).

The MMR I believe - probably - takes into account if you left a game and matches you with other leavers.

your math teacher never taught you statistics? you are simply experiencing “regression to the mean”. win/loss streaks are actually perfectly normal and to be expected.

On a stable account a 10 game win streak should be around a 1/1,000 chance. Given that games are supposed to be 50/50.

I think the matches are manipulated in some way. Probably because once you reach your natural skill level and rank comp would feel stale and boring and players would likely loose interest.

Solution is to forget about your SR. Realise it’s a made up number and NOBODY cares - so why should you? If you want to improve your skill watch your replays back and identify and fix your mistakes. If you need a number to go off focus on your stats instead. There’s plenty of numbers in there which are way more relevant to your skill than SR is.

Then for better matches just use the group up feature and limit SR range and endorsement level to weed out the “others”. Simple? :slight_smile:

Why is MMR necessary for 50-50 matchmaking if we are ranked by SR? Couldn’t they just use SR, drag people in around some SR, and award SR +pbsr. Then, all that “regression” (towards your mean rank) would take hold much more naturally.

Now that I have 2 accounts I’m definitely noticing this. It’s what others have been saying all along. Some kind of hidden rigging.

Today I’ve gone from just over 2000 to 1800 and then all the way back up to 1993. I’ve lost count of the amount of times this has happened. Always really bad games with useless teams on the way down, and good games with a decent team on the way up.

You can almost guarantee that the game just before reaching the next rank will be next to impossible too. It wants you to almost get there, fall back down, then climb back up. It’s all designed to keep you coming back and to keep you playing.

It’s quite clever really. I wonder if this system was in place since the start, or was it put in place when they decided they were going to stop making any new content for the game?

I had a game in the middle of a win streak where our main tank left and we still won. It wasn’t even a difficult win either. Am I really supposed to believe that was a 50/50 match? I don’t think so.

Also, if you are just focused on climbing and don’t care about your stats; Try not to earn medals or cards, let your team make the big plays and just sort of be in the background. Be average whenever possible. You basically want to do the least amount you can without actually loosing the game. That way you’re less likely to be given a game where you’re expected to carry the entire team. I doubt it’ll be much fun to play like that though.

Like I said, at the end of the day SR means nothing. It’s a silly number that nobody cares about. Try to ignore it and enjoy the game. If you can’t do that, best to just play something else.

I would like to know this as well. The system is so clearly rigging and cherry picking the teams. I think it’s a different version of what CoD uses. Over there it is SBMM and here it’s MMR. Same kind of tech from what others have posted.

They seem to have controls in place for this. My friend will soft throw some matches until he’s not the expected carry. It works but you have to keep that inconspicuous MMR gameplay up for the entire session.

And if/when he suddenly busts out the tracer or widow and goes full addy, the game lags him out, noregs his shots, or seemingly makes his hitbox so large a blind controller player could headshot him for free. They really don’t want oppression, so when the smurfs get through the matchmaking cracks, the engine holds them back mid-match.

When you reach expected MMR system will hit you with all sorts of bad teams. Doesnt even need to be next rank, it could be something random like 2830.

If this is actually what is happening it would explain why MMR is hidden.

They’ve not really done a very good job though. Why send you on 10 game streaks that stick out like a sore thumb with 200+ swings in your SR. It should be loss loss win loss win win loss etc. Put you on a soft downward or upward trend. It would certainly feel a lot better to play.

I climbed from bronze to plat on solo queue support a few seasons ago. I know I’ve improved since then, my stats are better and I die a lot less. Yet now my games are harder in silver than they were in plat. Just doesn’t make any sense.

Maybe it’s rigged, maybe it’s just broken. It’s probably both :laughing:

Matches are not mathematically setup to be 50/50 it can range from 40-70 either way. So you may be so far behind that you don’t stand a snowballs chance in lava of winning.

there is no regression to mean in a skill cap game. You dont go from highs to low’s, you go from high’s to less high’s to no high’s and then it’s balanced. You simply beat worse players until you are no longer the better player. You think top NBA teams go on losing streaks against inferior teams? No, they will beat a bunch of high schoolers every single time. It’s simply not possible that I could end up consistently queued with leavers and throwers trying to derank at pure random, unless of course I have been reported so many times for my off-meta picks that blizzard thinks im a troublemaker and just sticks me with a bunch of legitimate throwers to “keep the population pool happy”. Why doesnt the enemy team have any leavers when I’m playing? Why is it always my team?

This NEVER happened in S1-S15 or so. I have over 2000 hours all at around 3900 average SR. Then I started to notice I’d get in these absolutely soul crushing games with constant leavers and supports just spamming emote in spawn and such, and now I can barely hang in low diamond. Thing is, when I stop playing on this account for a few months (usually because I get banned) and then return, I easily climb again until out of nowhere it’s just nothing but trash teams once more.

This isnt gambling here. It makes no sense that you would win 10 games and then lose 10 games. The natural progression would be win 10 games, lose 2 games, win 8 games, lose 4 games, win 5 games, lose 5 games, and now you are placed.
