My GPU temp sticks around 90-100 degrees Celsius while playing OW, my frames are around 59 constantly, what settings can I change in game that would help with the GPU load? Do I just do anything that decreases framerate? Or are there specific settings that will help more.
I have an AMD Radeon r9 m380 and I’m playing on an iMac with bootcamp
i don’t think you can do anything… try lowering the graphics if you can but i’ll rater buy a new pc or somehow get a better cooler system for the iMac you have
There should be an application for AMD you can download to make a more aggressive fan curve. But it probably just needs to be cleaned out if you aren’t overclocking.
I don’t really know anything about macs these days, but 100C is Flamin’ Hot™.
Is there any way you can open it up and clean it? I try to clean my PC every 2-3 months or so to keep dust in check, but when I’ve let it get bad in the past (always a bad idea) I’ve noticed substantial temp drops and less fan strain.
That kind of heat will at the very least shorten the lifespan of your GPU if not cause more serious damage, so definitely look into it ASAP.
Even under full strain it shouldn’t be getting the toasty with proper cooling. Check to make sure the system isn’t dusty, that the system isn’t blocked for intake / exhaust, isn’t recycling hot air from somewhere, set up in a toasty area, or that the fans are running at appropriate speed.
If it’s 90-100c I think it really needs some new thermal paste or replacing. You could try MSi Afterburner, it’s a gpu fan speed profiler although I’m not sure if it supports AMD cards.
Don’t know how old your GPU is, but nowadays most modern GPUs report safe temperatures up to 105-110 (some even to 120) °C so this still should be fine. Although constantly remaining at that teperature is quite high.
Also depends on whether you’re playing on a desktop or a laptop, as laptops tend to get hotter quicker due to the compaction, the type of casing, as metal is better at dissipating heat than plastic and weather also plays a role, if it’s 35-40°C outside, your pc will also get hotter.
If it really bothers you, you can always lower the graphic settings, clean the fans if possible and in the extreme case, look to replace the cooling system. It’s usually the cheapest of a whole computer so it shouldn’t be a disaster for the pockets.
that sounds like you have a problem with the cooler or the card my dude, my PNY 780Ti had a choke or something that was over volted and got super hot, sent it in for a RMA. are you using MSI Afterburner? what are the fan speeds and voltage like?
Guys, OP is using an imac AIO I am assuming. The mentioned gpu is mid-grade at best! With that said, There is no space in them machines for air flow not to mention your cpu could be contributing to your gpu working harder than it should be.
You can try lowering your settings otherwise there is not much you can do except keeping your ambient temperature in the room you’re playing in low!
I’d run it @ medium graphic settings, ALL low w/ anti-aliasing turned off 75% render
Good luck… Don’t know what Apple was thinking shoving a gpu in them small machines!
