Season 9 Placements - Toxic levels increasing?

This has by far been the worst season of comp yet. Worst placement matches Ive ever done.

Im not talking about Victory vs Defeats… Im talking about toxicity. Ive had to report people almost every single match. I know Overwatch has had issue with toxic players, but this season has been absolutely insane. Im actually stunned. Its almost like the toxic behavior is getting worse, not better.

For example… I literally had 2 different people throw 2 seperate games because they couldn’t get a Mercy to pocket their Pharah gameple, so they picked Hanzo or Torb and just spammed I need healing all game…

These are Masters/Grand Masters/Top 500 btw…

Every single game there were people fighting about “gold medals” and who had the most. If the team really wants to reduce this behavior, they 100% NEED to rework the medal system.

I will reference a post Ive already made here:

Also… the matchmaking really needs to be improved. There has to be some way to indicate to your team via icons which roles you prefer like: tank, flex, support, offense, etc.

The more blizzard trying to fight toxicity - the more people complains about how much more toxic game becomes. Fascinating.

its not that season 9 is bad, these have always been issues the game/community has. Maybe you just got an unlucky string of those in your placement games so far.
The idea of fixing this is more complicated than it seems…

Oh I know. I never said it was an easy fix…but it does seem worse

Y’know, mate, if you go to options, then social, then groups, you can mute the people who are being toxic to you.

Yes, but this doesn’t stop the people from throwing games. Its stops you from getting tilted by hearing them, but it does nothing in terms of increasing your chance of winning the game

It also has been only a week, the toxic people just placed into the rank you are.

Just wait a bit, and things’ll calm down.

Lets hope youre right. I just dont understand why people can’t be good to each other. I know its possible. Ive had comp games before where my team gets crushed, but everyone is still in good spirits and we all share friendly laughs and GGs at the end.

Its just so damn rare

I climbed 200 SR yesterday, so maybe I’m just in a “don’t stop me now” attitude.

I think you answered your own question OP, the focus on competition is what makes the environment so toxic. Cooperation does the opposite.
Not saying cooperation doesn’t carry a fair amount of toxicity (minimal), but it is nothing compared to people trying to out do each other no matter how.
