Player: “Well, it’s been a tight match for the past 10 minutes, let’s make this last battle co-”

Jeff Kaplan materializes out of thin air

P: “NAN-”

Jeff places finger over your mouth

J: “Shhh…”

Uses other hand to reach into his pocket
Pulls out a coin with one red and one blue side on it

Player tries to remove Jeff’s finger
P: “No-mf, NO!! PLE-MMMF”

Jeff places his hand on the player’s mouth

J: “Don’t be afraid, it’s just a flip of the coin. ;)”

Player watches in horror as Jeff readies the coin

J: “3, 2, 1… annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd… 0.”

Jeff tosses the coin into the air

Player wishes they should’ve just stayed in quickplay

It flies into the air, the blue and red flashing quickly

The coin lands in Jeff’s hand, and he quickly hides it

J: “What’s it going to be, what’s it going to beeeeee… Hm hehe heh”

P:“MMMPHFFF PMHFFF PLEEE OHHH EHEEENSE!!!”

J: “What was that? I couldn’t hear you properly, did you say you wanted to be on defence or attack”

P: “MPPPPPHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

J: “Hehehe well looks I won’t play with destiny, let’s let the coin decide… hehehehe”

Jeff slowly removes his hand, and even more slowly opens his palm to reveal the coin

“Please please please, I’ll buy all the OWL skins, the lootboxes, I’ll be a HANZO main!!!”

J: “It’s too late for that.”

Player looks down at the palm of Jeff’s hand

It’s on the blue side.

It’s defence.

Defence.

P: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!.

Jeff teleports away, but as he is, he whispers:

“See you in 59.”

You black out, and when you reawaken, you see in front of you:

DEFEAT

You’ve dropped from 60 to 59 skill rating.

If you consistently got high stats during a match you would be rewarded heavily for wins and punished little for losses, which would mean that even if you had a solid 50% winrate Yoi woild still climb the ranks. The reverse is also true if you performed badly: given little for wins and large punishments for losses.

Losing and win streaks woild also give you more SR loss and gain per loss/win.

So maybe after winning eight games in a row the game would start giving you 40 SR per win to make you climb faster.

You played, an if you got a Tie game there was a “Coin Toss” at the end. You either won or lost according to the coin toss because then came “SUDDEN DEATH”. Same map, an if you were on offense you had to win. An if it was on a payload map you had to go all the way to WIN… Not get farthest, but TOTALLY WIN or you lost the match…
OK, you WIN a game, your SR goes up slightly (mind you, there were only a rank of something like 50, been a while).
You LOST, you go down a whole rank. So say you were at 42, you lost so now you are at 41. Now IF you got on fire, you didn’t drop so much but the rest of your friends did so now they are below you (normally happened to DPS getting on fire in early days).
OH, an you could have multiple of the SAME Heroes, so 6 Torbjorn’s on Gibraltar payload with turrets… YEAH, Kill Dozer taking out the entire enemy team. Or 6 Symmetra’s on Defense… Kill Gates/ Kill Rooms from “H” “E” double hockey sticks.

Jeez i see why they changed it now

Yep… I’ve been here since the Free Weekend right before release (got to level 30 in 3 days or so). Seen a lot of ups and downs since then. But getting rid of that dang “Coin Toss” was one of the best things they ever did. I could go on with some contentious thing they have an continue to pull, but as far as Competitive it is sooooo much better without a Coin Toss determining who won and who lost.

no limit and coin flip cancer. anyone who says they loved it (like me) is actually being ironic.
