Sceen tearing when locking game at monitors refresh rate

Title sums it up nicely but Imma elaborate.

I have a pretty good pc and I can easily hit the max fps in Overwatch (300 fps)
However I only have a 75hz monitor…

I read alot that you should just cap your games fps to match your monitor refreshrate and so I’ve tried that.

But when I cap the game at 75fps I get screen tearing and ghosting which is (by my understanding) what I should be getting if I dont cap fps.

So currently I’m just letting my fps run loose because matching Hz and Fps makes for a worse experience for me…
What do? I mean, I should still be capping at 75fps right???

Capping your fps at your refresh rate won’t remove tearing. You need to use V-Sync to do that but it will introduce input lag.

If you have a g-sync or freesync monitor you need to cap your fps a few fps below your refresh rate for it to be active.

Try capping to 72, might be the actual refresh rate of your monitor

Use rivatuner statistics server to cap your framerate and use a sync option

Thats a Vsync issue. If you dont synchro your frames with the hz, you will get double potentially but screen tearing happens. If you can pump 75 hz stable, activate vsync and you are set.

Imput lag wont change since your frame rate wont go below so you will have a “constant” low imput lag.

that is not my experience. the only thing i fond that cuts input lag to the minimum is running at 300fps.
i have 240hz monitor and setting frames to auto or 240 or using freesync all caused more input lag than just setting to 300fps.

That makes zero sense dude. Input lag has nothing to do with the absolute numbers of FPS, its related to a different thing.

it is what it is, ow optimization doesnt respect theory.
if i lock the game to 240 it can dip to around 180 in a heavy teamfight. if i lock it to 300 it will only dip to around 240. so why it cant maintain stable 240 i dont know.

Uncap the framerate and let your FPS run wild. Embrace screen tearing! The low sim values make it worth it.

Or alternatively, you want to enable both G sync and fast sync, then set your framerate to custom at 300. If your framerate never dips below your refresh rate then you probably only need fast sync actually.

I like to cap my FPS at 20-30 less than what my max framerate is so for you that’d be 270-280. Essentially this prevents the PC from working full throttle the whole time which will reduce the chance of framerate spikes/changes. Also make sure your in full screen and not borderless windowed.

Try capping the framerate at 73fps and see if that helps. The framerate doesn’t stay solid at whatever number you capped, sometimes it can go a little over it. Your fps probably goes to 76-77 sometimes which might be the reason for the screen tearing. By capping it at 73 it shouldn’t go over 75 anymore, or very rarely at most. I had the same issue and this worked for me.
