So sometimes I’ll play in the evening and I keep getting paired with the same people over and over. I know it matches you with same skill, region, etc. I just find it so odd like only 12 people are playing the game at that time. Anyone else get annoyed with this?
Edit: I’m talking about ranked play.

there aren’t many people in your rank

“40,000,000 copies sold”
Then why am I running into the same 11 every time?

I’d get that if it wasn’t for how many copies of the game got sold. I really can’t imagine the pool would be that low. If it is, they should mix it up. This is consistent for me. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were decent players but you get so many trolls at my rank. Just feels like the lower end is left out to dry.
If you don’t leave game at the end (of QP?) you get a new game immediately with the same people.
If you leave and requeue immediately there is some non-negligible chance that you end up against the same people.
If you want to be really sure to be against different players, play a different game mode or wait 2 or 3 minute before queuing again.
For starters, Bronze has substantially less players than other ranks untill ypu get up to GM.
For seconders, and yes that is a word thank you very much, the matchmaker is likely not straight matching SR and MMR. If nothing else it will inherently want to keep groups together, as it is much less strain on the system to find 1 or 2 people than to find a whole different set of 12.
On top of that I suspect it also takes into account what server you are on, and how good your connection is.
So now, you need the same SR, the same server, the same connection, the same MMR and all within a system that will try to keep groups it has already formed together. Makes for a small pool in an already underpopulated rank.
Let’s do some guesstimate math on this.
8% of players are bronze
There are 40 million players in overwatch
Which means there are about 3200000 bronze players.
At night, I assume around 95% of people would be asleep, so there would only be potentially 160000 players online at that time at that rank.
Let’s assume all regions are the same population density at 33%, so 33% na, EU and KR.
That means there are 50000 players give or take in your region awake at that time, assuming everyone who has ever played overwatch is playing it right at that moment, which of course isn’t true, so let’s assume maybe 5% of those people are playing Overwatch at the time (after all, Bronze players probably aren’t super intense about playing the game constantly), that leaves 2500 potential partners for you to play with at your rank in the dead of the night.
If only around 40% of those are playing Quick play or Competitive (with the remaining 20% in other gamemodes) if you’re playing one of those core gamemodes there are only 1000 people playing.
If you’re East coast USA that means there’s only 500 on your side of the country playing the same gamemode as you at the same rank, and since they’ll be trying to find you matches with good ping… Yeah you could easily get hooked up with the same people repeatedly, especially if you queue up at the same time as the game ends, leaving them more likely to be in the queue at the same time as you are.

If it was in a row then why would the system mix you up? Just less work.
If it wasn’t in a row it’s probably you have similar MMR, live in the same region, play around the same time, might be prefered as teammate by each other.
I think it has to do with your ques lining up so well. Your all coming out of a match fresh and reentering at the same time.

You overestimate how many people queue at the same time in the same MMR range. It’s normal to know many people who play at the same time of day. That’s what matchmaking is there for.
That’s still 500, assuming those numbers are accurate, same 12 people still don’t add up.
Nah. I went to smoke one and after that i got matched with the same person that was previously in my team. Also i do see many ppl over and over in my games. Like the next day. And iam not even bronze. The playerbase is kinda small atm i would say. Maybe because of summer or ppl being tired of CC and one shots…idk

I’ll use an example. There are two guys I’ve seen in my rank that are straight trolls. I’m talking spamming the pings and jumping off ledges. They even will kill people to have some contribution to avoid being detected. I’ve reported them multiple times and still see them weeks later. Imagine that, how many people get matched with those guys. Their rank keeps sinking. The placement matches make no difference you get matched with the same skill level. You’re stuck in your rank. I’m not wanting to be matched with pros who commit 100% of their focus on the game. I check my phone while I’m waiting to respawn, make a funny joke, etc. but atleast I try. From what everyone is saying they might aswell merge bronze with silver. I’m just saying seems like we get the short end of the stick.

500 people across half a continent, and that’s not counting however many are in game.
If we had 10 minute games all spaced out evenly 1 minute apart, you’d only have 50 people to search with if you requeued instantly.
Account for the game trying to put you in a nearby match, as in, if you’re in B.C canada it’s not going to put you with someone in Mexico most likely, and 12 makes a lot more sense.
500 different people for your first game yeah. But once you finish your first game those 11 other people might conveniently queue again at the same time as you, making it very simple for the matchmaker to just boop you all in a game together to keep queue times reasonable.

You’re still not making a sound argument here. That’s still 50 people to pool with. Also I have been matched plenty of times with people in Central and South America. So I’m really not seeing how you can attempt to make sense of this system without any hard data. It’s just assumption that doesn’t weigh against my personal experience.
I understand where you’re coming from. We’re trying to rationalize why it occurs but without knowing the sequencing of games( i.e. do multiple games end together or is there just one game? I doubt that. It just seems like it’s not a priority issue to improve the matchmaking service. Then the fanbase is highly complacent with how it already is
There’s this one player I encounter so often, he’s a really good Junkrat main named Pandanfan (or something like that) I’ve been matched with them soooo many times on different occasions even weeks or months apart.
I’ll be in one game and I’m like “dang this Junkrat is really effing good” and then I press tab “OH it’s Pandan, makes sense now”
But yeah back to main topic there’s some nights where I feel like I just keep getting put into games against or with the same people for hours.

Low Bronze doesn’t have many people, the same is true for high GM rank. The fastest queue times with the most different amount of people would be between high silver and low plat.
Unfortunately your rank is bare as they come. Like 2% of less of the player base. Most rank out of it. If you work on a few basics I am sure you can too.
I feel you, I get into the game with the same people on a daily basis.
I think it’s partly do to connection.
Don’t feel too bad, it happens to overwatch Streamers a lot. It seems like just about every other game Seagull plays has him either fighting with or fighting against XQC lol
