I used to never have any connection issues but I recently started noticing rubberbanding and other in game issues like shots not registering and actions being reversed and other issues related to latency in Overwatch specifically. I have updated network drivers, used both Wi-Fi and ethernet, changed the router, changed the device I’m using and all to no avail. I still get RTT spikes according to the net graph tool when I play a match of overwatch. I have yet to run a WinMTR test but am happy to do that if you are willing to help me out with this issue. Thanks in advance for your help. Oh, and I also get the same latency spikes when running off my phone’s mobile Hotspot just to test. The issue still persists to this day, regardless of what I try.
There does seem to be a bit of a latency issue on the first line in that test. 120ms is relatively high for a node that is so close to your house. Have you talked to Rogers?
Yes I spoke to Rogers and they assure me everything is fine on their end… though it surely is not fine on my end when I game.
Be advised that I usually experience a regular latency spike just at the beginning of the match even before character selection only for the latency to fall to 40ms and then stay there for the majority of the match. Those sort of latency spikes I care less about.
However, when it “spikes” during gameplay, it is usually only up to 60ms (sometimes only 50ms) but it is still noticeable in game and rubberbanding still occurs but is minor (still disruptive to gameplay though)
Will any of that make a difference to the results?
Here is a second round of WinMTR results without the test running at the very, very beginning of the match. I started it right after character selection when the latency was around 40ms. Any spikes in this results were during gameplay specifically.
If you’re only seeing spikes to 60ms, then it’s not something your ISP would be concerned about. That’s still far below anything serious as far as their connectivity average goes.
Kinda, see below.
There are even worse spikes in this test, which are likely contributing to the higher average.
I have one final test for you to look at please if you can? Thanks for your time and effort in this matter.
So, for this last test, I set it up to run on my mobile hotspot (I know that that kind of connection can be utterly unstable) but I found that the baseline ping was playable at 60ms approximately with spikes to 100ms+ as well. If it is an ISP/modem issue, why would I experience the same sort of issues while on my mobile hotspot? Again, I realize that a mobile hotspot is no where near ideal for gaming but I wanted to do this just for argument’s sake. Let me know what you think might be happening here. Thanks!
There’s a possibility that the issue is with the computer itself. Perhaps there is a network management application, like KillerNIC, causing interference. But ultimately, both connections look very laggy, with the hotspot showing much worse results than the home modem.
Thank you so much for your help Nicole! I tested the game at my Uncle’s home on his connection and it’s rock solid flat ping at his house. I think you were right about it being ISP/modem related. Thanks again.
