Roll Queue Time Better

What I’ve noticed all day today that roll queue has had a less and less wait time. I think less people are playing this game overall which is good, right?

I noticed a shorter queue time as well but wouldnt a shorter queue time mean more people are playing?

Huge population does mean faster queue times but also what role you’re picking matters even more.

I always thought a longer queue time meant there were so many people playing that the games couldn’t handle the volume and that’s why it took longer for queue times. Hence the 5v5 take down. But I could be wrong.

Sort of.

The Matchmaker is a complex system. It factors in players skills and player population of similar skills to create matches. This video explains how it works really well (its also based on an article written by the Devs):

Overwatch 2’s Matchmaking System DETAILED by Blizzard

So if you have long queue times, essentially the Matchmaker is having a difficult time finding players of similar skills on the Matchmaker Rating or MMR. If there is a large population playing at one time, the wait time will be shorter has theres a larger collection of players in queue to select from to create a match. It gets more complex when you factor in Roles. For example, if you queued for DPS while large population of other players also queued for DPS, but a smaller population queued for Support, your queue time will be more as theres a smaller population of Support players in queue to match with.

Its the bottlenecking effect.

However, if the population for all roles is about equal and is “large” in volume, queue times will be shorter as the MM has an easier time matching players into a match with similar MMR to each other.

It was my understanding that the move to 5v5 was because there were less players queuing for Tank than any other role. The Tank role became the bottleneck. With 2 less Tank roles per match, each match could be created quicker with the MM.

The best demo of the queue times for OW2 is playing in the early morning. Between 2am to 6am seems to have the lowest population of people playing. This leads to long queue times, up to 10+ to find a match sometimes, even with all Roles selected for queue. And this is because there isnt enough overall population to create matches.

Hope this helps explain it :+1:
