Role Select and how League of Legends dealt with matchmaking

Everyone is complaining about filing or getting one tricks in their team and its really frustrating when you go into a game with 4 tank mains and enemy team is semi balanced between dps/tank and healers. My T500 match was on Kings Row and I literally had 4 support mains (5 including me), today i had 4 dps mains in my games (3 games in a row) someone of them was not welling to switch, i was solo healing 2 games today, sometimes you still win but lets be serious the odds are against you.

Role select cant be worst than the chaotic queue right now, even if you force a 2-2-2 meta you still can switch to triple tank or whatever is needed during that match / map.

League of Legends was chaotic like Overwatch currently is. Blind pick mode is a good example. You go into games with no supports, 3 adc or 4 top laners. Eventually they were forced to introduce role select to their game.

I hope Overwatch/Blizzard would face the fact one day and implement this into comp.

The community really needs this and I hope one of the devs say something about it and how they really think that role select WONT help with toxicity/throwing and other crazy things that you face on the ladder.

Again, I know Overwatch dont want to force meta but the game is going that way and we are at the ninth season yet you see lots of people leaving the game or just dont care about comp anymore and this is sad

(Edit reason: just remembered this, yesterday my friend sent me a video of his team, he is a dva main and had 5 tracer mains on his team)

(Edit 2 reason: user by the name of DeadTom suggested a 1 tank 1 support 1 dps select with the rest of the slots to be filling) which I think is a great idea and we can evolve on that to a better one if possible.

(Edit 3 reason: user by the name of OzoneOOO suggested a lobby system before queuing, refer to his post for more info [quote=“OzoneOOO-1681, post:45, topic:42680”]
Since you asked, I have one.

League is a completely different game, with a completely different environment and definitions for roles.

League has ambiguous roles (or rather what characters fit into those roles), unlike Overwatch which has a rather clear-cut set of characters and where those characters fit. For example, you can run a Singe support in League despite him being in a completely different class that is traditional to the role due to playstyles and items allowing you to do that. In Overwatch, you don’t quite have that luxury. A support is a support, a Soldier in the support slot wont be effective, whereas a Mercy will.

League has always had the most effective strat being the same. Sure maybe there’s a few memes thrown in there like double jungle, but that has never shown the effectiveness of deviating strategies in Overwatch such as Triple Tank. In Overwatch, unlike League, not only character metas are changing, but the class set-ups also.

Even if we get past this terrible comparison that people who don’t even play League make, there’s still a meta problem and the algorithm that comes with role queue. Let’s say that for now 2-2-2 is the best meta and there are no other comps that are good and compete with this composition (which is not true, at all) if the meta changed would we still have the algorithm that matched players that would form a 2-2-2 comp? Well, then people would complain that 3-2-1 should have the priority for matchmaking, and after that meta shifts into 2-1-3 people would complain more and so on. It’s never ending, and frankly isn’t effective for the devs to change metrics for the system, assuming they would do it at all.

Ok, let’s say the devs somehow keep up with the demand with changing metas and changing metrics in the matchmaking to accommodate those metas. What stops a DPS main from queueing healer to get a faster queue, insta-locking DPS, and then forcing his team to fill anyway? If your answer is to lock out classes after you select your role, then that would ruin what Overwatch is about, changing and adapting when strategies aren’t working. And it would also limit what types of metas there can be.

Overall, role select or role queue or role prefer or whatever you want to call it is a dumb idea proposed by people who don’t understand why it works in MOBAs and refuse to look at the negatives and how they quite clearly outweigh whatever little positives there are.

No.

You’re comparing Apples to watermellons guy.

2 COMPLETELY different things with many completely different attributes that make up the game.

They aren’t comparable for your terrible idea of role select.

What a joke of just saying it’s a terrible idea. It’s a great idea. This is a dps main who doesn’t want longer q. I will take a longer q and more balanced games every time. Btw he said role q not role select. Learn the difference. The current state of comp is a joke.

DPS main that will take longer que? Who are you talking to? Sure, I have the most time on Junkrat? But I have second longest time on Ana. And third longest time on Roadhog.

I haven’t played junkrat consistantly since october. I haven’t played DPS anywhere near consistantly since December.

I play a lot of support and a bit of tank. But you’ll never know that because we can’t see recent games played or time played in the past month or two.

I’ve played less than 3 hours of the entire DPS roster since the new year.

Check yourself guy. It’s not about “This guy is a DPS main and will be the only one affected by the queue time.”

Also, it’s literally in the title “ROLE SELECT AND HOW LEAGUE OF LEGENDS DEALT WITH MATCHMAKING”

…Except im a tank main and I offered a multitude of points against it. You, however, just say “it’s good” without offering any counterpoints.

Thank you. Exactly this. There’s a reason why every single moba has this in place. Every single game that has roles has this in place. It would make absolutely no sense otherwise to have a team game with various important roles just decided on whim at random.

It would be no different from their LFG tool in WoW, where you just queue up 5 random players without healers and tanks. If they thought of it that way, they would see how insane the current OW comp is.

Stop comparing a game that allows to swap heroes mid match to one that doesn’t. Your comparing apples to mangos.

Actually, many players considerably higher rated than you, with more experience and knowledge in this game and many other competitive titles think it’s a great idea. Myself included.

The pros out weight the cons in such a manner it’s not even funny.

Then offer a counterpoint.

There’s literally hundreds of posts out there saying role queue is needed, it’s very tiring posting again and again in response to people like you.

Whatever lack of freedom or limitations you speak of, are minor compared to people losing games right out of hero select. Period.

If you have a better solution for teamwork and people having balanced team comps, please feel free to make a suggestion. Otherwise save your breathe calling someone’s idea bad. Let’s hear your’s.

Wow, nice. Real strong arguments here. “A lot of people want it therefore it’s right, and i also cant actually afford to type out a simple counterpoint”

I could literally say the exact same thing. Obviously, this is a partisan debate. As in, the community is split. There are many people on both sides.

“whatever X you say is dumb because i put an arbitrary infinite value in Y despite there being more consequences and more severe consequences in X”

Nice. Really beat me there. The problem with this is that you put a dumb arbitrary value over everything ive said. Not thinking of the consequences or anything. You simply say “this is worse because it is infinitely worse”. Not an actual response to what i say

Blizzard incentivizing players to play other roles, putting a Guild/Clan system, taking out that dumbass system where you face against worse players while stacking, these are better and much more subtle ways to change the system for the better.

see? I replied to your comment in a well thought out manner that actually responds to what you say. You could give me the same treatment, ey?

Also, whats with the “actually, players with higher ranks than you”. I don’t think i stated anything about ranks, I didn’t BM at all in that regard.

As I thought, completely dodged the point of the strengths, trying to use pretty little English doesn’t help your case, I’m sorry. You still do not have an idea. Still waiting for it. Where is it?

…Pretty language? What? Like, arbitrary? lmao ok ill try to use 8th grade level vocabulary
I literally offered multiple (sorry, i know, multitude is too big of a word, huh?) solutions which are subtle yet effective. I’ve answered your questions. You haven’t offered any worthwhile responses, they have so far been ‘this discussion has been done to death, people have already made responses and I don’t feel like explaining them’. That is your actual first sentence.

I haven’t dodged the strengths. Your main part of the reply, your counterpoint if you will, was ‘your consequences are a lot less worse than my one consequence, which is people lose because of this’

Did you even read what I said or are you trolling?

You did not offer multiple solutions. None of them are actually solutions. But I’ll be like you, let me speak in diamond, so a diamond like you can understand. Perhaps you are blessed with luck, thus you got boosted from silver to your current rank through getting cooperative teammates every game. Sadly this truth isn’t universal.

Many players are losing games in hero selection, due to the fact that the system does not help set up a team game with proper compositions and roles. Is this very hard for you to comprehend? Diamond?

Blizzard incentivizing players to play other roles, putting a Guild/Clan system, taking out that dumbass system where you face against worse players while stacking, these are better and much more subtle ways to change the system for the better.

que’??? These aren’t subtle solutions that would help people climb? Creating a system that rewards stacking which removes a percentage of “bad” teammates you can get is not a solution? How? What consequences do my solutions bring? They’re subtle and effective, non invasive yet change how you experience the game. The solutions dont even only incentivize group play. You just say things like “this is good” and “this is bad and useless” without bringing up why and how you draw the conclusion. Normative claims and empirical claims. Look it up.

Again, all you’ve done is insulted my high diamond/low master rank which is better than much more than half the playerbase. You’ve offered nothing but ad hominems (sorry, insults) that, to be honest aren’t even bad. If I’m a simple lucky silver, are all plats just unlucky GMs, are you just a boosted gold? Like what, dude? Like, all I’m asking for is for you to do is to attack my position and defend yours. Just attack my points. Not that hard.

How do you draw the conclusion that

Many players are losing games in hero selection, due to the fact that the system does not help set up a team game with proper compositions and roles.

why is the issue the system, but not the players who only play a certain role? Why is the issue worth putting in this system with all these consequences and little proactivity?

the system has to adapt to the current state of the game, you cant force what the community is actually going though.

Role select will solve these problems especially when you still can change your role anytime during the match. but you know that u have players who main different roles in ur team instead of two or one role and its rip at start

If you can swap your role mid-game that defeats the whole purpose of any role select, so why would we need it and what good would it even do?

again, League wanted to keep meta open but ultimately faced the fact that its not working much like here. you cant have 5 tracer mains in ur team at a high level game ( any level of game) its just frustrating.

I’d prefer 2-2-2 over 5-1 anytime any map

the system has to adapt to the current state of the game, you cant force what the community is actually going though.

exactly. So why are you trying to force a 2-2-2 comp when we have other compositions such as quad or triple tank? Hell, i’d say 2-2-2 isnt even must-play.

If you can change your role in the middle of the match, what the hell is the point of having role select? What stops a DPS main from just queueing for healer and then play Genji and force your team to fill anyway?
