I’m still on the fence about whether I like the idea of role queue or not, but it has to be better than the way the game currently plays. I finished my placements last night (something I’ve been putting off because Comp is so miserable lately) and every single one of these games had absurd team compositions. Now, I should note that it was 4 wins and 1 draw, so I’m not even complaining about losing, but even when winning, the chaotic nature of team building makes this game exhausting and unbearable to play.
The most infuriating game (which, again, we won) started with 5 DPS and me as solo healer. Annoyed that no one would switch to a tank or second healer, I also switch to DPS. A minute in, finally two people switch to healers so I swap to a tank (Winston). About 30 seconds later, one of the helaers switches to a second main tank (Rein). Shortly after that one of the DPS players also switches to a tank (Wrecking Ball) so now we have 3 tanks and 1 healer. I stay on because I’m close to my ult, use it, last a bit longer, as soon as I die, I come back out as a healer, we win the round (Busan) … the next round another one of the DPS players switches to a healer which was unnecessary and probably would have lost us the game except, oh, one of the enemy team left. This is a very common theme in all of my games. It’s not just that everyone wants to play DPS … it’s that nobody understands how to build a functional team. I doubt role queue will actually solve these problems because again, all of these games for me were wins or draws … and some of them were wins against teams with a standard 2/2/2 while my team had a hodge podge of roles. There are some games where I am SO GRATEFUL the person playing tank rage switches to DPS because they had NO IDEA what they were doing on tank! So I don’t know how to fix the frustration of Overwatch, but I know playing it becomes more and more of a nightmare every day. At least role queue would offer some sort of structure but … it might be too little too late.
They could also just flip a switch and take out hero stacking from mystery heroes…or add in a random skin option…or make a simple scoreboard (not a fan)…
I mean, I don’t work at Blizzard, so that’s not possible.
But I did work on a Tribes 1 server mod, that had 52,000 lines of code, was hosted on about 40 servers, with competitive league play for about 2 years.
Really though, the first few bullet points are just a rule change on allowable team comps, and slightly tweaking the interface to features that already exist.
I find it pretty hard to believe even a junior programmer would struggle with that.
I know you are really proud of this idea, but it needs to be an all or nothing thing just like with hero limits. Lower ranked players are all about the loot boxes, most higher ranked players couldn’t care less about them and they are not an incentive to use LFG.
Personally though, if LFG was replaced with an automated Role-Queue, I would be all over that.
It’s all anyone ever really used it for, but it was always going to be dead in the water so long as things like private profiles and a lack of any decent filtering tools existed.
hahaha maybe slightly more often they do but about 8/10 of my games are absolute dog crap. Most of the games are over before the hero select screen pops up because of one tricks, smurf one tricks, and hero pool issues.
LFG would continue to be the ghost town it is now above plat.
thats a lazy way to address the issue of having 5 dps in comp, or 3 tanks and 3 healers. role queue will help balance the game also re balance the hero’s.
