Role Queue vs Role Limits

Wanted to make this post to see what you guys think. What are the pros and cons of both? I’ll admit I’m biased towards role limits but add extra pros and cons you think I missed. Also please don’t bring up open queue. Make it strictly about RQ vs RL.

RQ pros:

  1. Pretty much guaranteed to play exactly who you want without fighting other for a hero.

  2. Separate ranks per role.

  3. Stable 1-2-2 comp

RQ cons:

  1. Strict matchmaking leads to bad queue times.

  2. Good queue times leads to bad matchmaking.

RL pros:

  1. Fast queue times

  2. More strick matchmaking

  3. Stable 1-2-2 comp

RL cons:

  1. Can’t always play the role you want

  2. One tricks become more annoying

  3. Only one combined rank

  4. Toxic community…

What else would you add? Also which do you prefer?

I prefer role queue, I can play whatever role I want whenever I want. I do this for fun and don’t mind losing so long as I’m having fun with the character I’m playing.

I mean, not really. Still have to have the faster finger to lock your hero before someone else does. Especially for popular ones like Mercy, Ana, Kiriko. But if you meant guaranteed role not hero, then yes.

As for preference, I will forever be an advocate for open roles, but if I have to choose the lesser of 2 evils, then Role Limits is my choice. At least with RL you can discuss swapping roles with someone who is struggling.

I’m happy with role queue. Maybe it causes matchmaking problems, but I think sparser playercount overall is also to blame for that (if not mainly to blame).

If 6v6 comes back, I’d personally like RL, but in 5v5 RL would suck. I can’t play tank at all, so I pity my teammates who locked in dps and support before me.

RL would give you the opportunity to swap with someone struggling.

RQ ensures (with a functional MM if Blizz gets there) an even square off. (GM Tank vs GM Tank over GM Tank vs Diamond Tank GM DPS/Supp filling on Tank)

RL could potentially have augments added to enable non-standard comps while debuffing/buffing them to compensate. (EG a 2/1/2, 2/2/1 that wouldn’t be objectively superior or inferior to 1/2/2)

Idk if they’re getting there anytime soon bud lol. They say they fixed matchmaking like a million times already and it’s still weird.

RL with this community. Good luck with that

I’ll add that to the list lol

Blizzard accidentally put in role limits while they were initially releasing role queue and it was a terrible experience for many reasons.

  1. Race to pick - Players who are able to load in faster were able to select their heroes first. Players with worse hardware would disproportionately get forced onto unpopular roles and be less likely to play heroes that they want.

  2. Forced Role - People’s skill on each roles varies and people can end up getting forced onto roles they are not comfortable. It will put players back to a single MMR, which means that each player will have higher variance from their MMR.

  3. Encourages Quitting - Players that are forced onto roles they don’t like would just quit. People forced onto unpopular roles would quit, then their backfill would be forced into the unpopular role, and very often quit as well. At the time, Tank was very unpopular and I had multiple games where one team would never get a tank because so many people quit.

Yea, I… Doubt it’ll get there at this point.
At least not for way longer than it would ideally take, think we’d have pretty fair stable matches by s4 but nope, lol.

when the assualt mode was up in the arcade i played it a lot and noticed that people tried to play roles that the other person wasnt playing. kind of was surprised. didnt have a game of 5 dps players. that really surprised me and i instalocked sombra all the time.

not saying you cant win with 5 dps… with the tanks being weaker maybe you can

I think it’s a nice idea but it wouldnt work out in practice. People are going to be very salty at having to offrole and will flame whoever took their role and/or throw. Imagine you got four one tricks on your team and it’s just an instant loss (justice for the one tricks though imo). I do miss the flexible open queue days but according to blizzard most players dont really flex and overall I’d rather people played what they’re good at. Especially if it’s competitive and if it’s QP then it would be frustrating to go into a casual gamemode and not play what you want, which would cause a massive spike in leavers.

Also if rank is going to be tied to effectively your ability to play all heroes you might as well skip the hurdles and just play open queue.

I certainly have longer open queue queue times. The matchmaking is more all over the place, since people are not always on the roles they have their mmr from, and its certainly not a 1-2-2 comp all the time. All 3 of those points are cons imo. Assuming you wanted a normal comp, might be a pro for people who want to play like 3 dps comps or tank stacking.

That was probably the best qp experience for years at that point. Had good comps without the queue times that followed when it was properly implemented. Had the same problems the game did before role queue was being added, but gave us 2-2-2 instead of other terrible comps. Was always first to pick roles b4, just you could have more than 2 of them.
