Just a disclaimer, I’m not really asking for this. I know role queue is coming, and I don’t think this is a better alternative; just some thoughts based on ideas I’ve seen around today. Not looking to argue
Anyway I saw people say there should just be a a 1-1-1 lower limit to start the game. So there would need to be a tank, healer, and dps at the least, and the game requires this to start. However, you don’t want to delay the start of the match just because there’s only two of the roles needed, for example. You also don’t necessarily want to make it first-come basis either, since then players with higher internet speeds will likely win over others.
The solution I was thinking of, is to just have players vote for heroes/roles to play. If two players want to play one hero, players can basically roll a die to see who gets it. For example, say there is 2-3-0 in the hero select screen, and the 3 is on DPS, with 0 on support. If the last player selects DPS, the game would need at least one support hero, so it would show a little randomizer that decides who gets moved to support, and then they get to choose the support they want. It picks from the DPS instead of tank to try equalize in the direction of 2-2-2, but not enforcing it. This way, you could still have a 3-2-1 or 4-1-1 comp, but not something like GOATS.
This system could also be changed to be more competitive friendly. Maybe the randomizer could just choose who gets moved based on win rate or something like that. There could also be a 3-per role maximum limit, basically to keep comp games from having 4 dps, but still have some flexibility from the forced 2-2-2.
All that being said, personally, I’m looking forward to the role queue, I think it will make it a lot easier for the devs to balance the game, and it’ll make the game more fresh and easier to refine even further. Thanks for coming to my ted talk lol
