Yo, silver player here. Trying to get good at roadhog. I’m decent for my rank, but I feel like there’s still alot to learn. Main question I suppose is WHERE am I supposed to be? I generally treat Roadhog as a ‘back off button’. If I notice a flanker on my healers, I go try and bully them. If my Rein’s getting overwhelmed, I go throw my weight around at him. But well, what suggestions do you all have? Where in a teamfight is Roadhog supposed to stand?
I try to stay at a range where I can be most effective with my alternate fire while also being able to get to cover. Playing around corners works very well for me when I do happen to play him
I thnk it’s dynamic. Behind your shield tank, sideways flanking a bit, and especially looking behind to peel for your healers. Try to utilize cover and shields to reduce feeding.
I play him as a flanker, I try and stay in cover when defending as him, but I’ll push the enemy back line at almost every opportunity.
I am quite often the main dps for my team when I play him.
- Always near cover, whether it is environment or the main tank’s shield
- In front when fighting 1 person or peeling
- Mostly behind cover if fighting more than 2 people at once (ie you aren’t a main tank)
An important aspect of roadhog that a lot of roadhog mains do not seem to get is to always be aware of the enemy team and their characters.
Roadhog is a very interesting character in a way that he can obtain extremely high value from matchups but can also feed extremely hard in others.
Your playstyle is often determined by the enemy team. This refers to, mainly, their tanks and supports.
You have to understand that flank hog will be severely crippled by an ana-zen compositions and even high sustain comps, such as your common goats. However, can be extremely potent against low-sustain compositions such as dive, and even bunker composition that choose the zen-mercy support lineup.
If you are playing a goats version of roadhog, you have to understand that roadhog is obviously not the most mobile tank. He is, however, amazing at winning the shield battles. So, I would very much look at the composition of the team as well. Most goats comps have lucio. Once you throw that hook, you are both immobile and subjective to being focused. Keep track of the lucio speed boost cooldown. Once this is applied, if you are at the front lines trying to land a clutch hook, the enemy team will have no problem walking up, stunning you with brig and then proceeding to get free ultimate charge. To avoid this, keep behind your “tanky” tanks. This ensures that if you miss your hooks when you move upward, your other tanks, who can take the CC, takes the cc and you don’t get screwed.
Roadhog works really well against dive. However, roadhog, flank style, against a competent dive team should not particularly be played. If you are flanking by yourself, it is really easy for the high mobility team to jump ontop of you once your hook is down and chop you up. In this instance, its better to play with your team. This way you can easily get rid of the DVA (You should really focus her first) and that pesky defense matrix that eats up all of your bullets. After the DVA is cleaned up, proceed to annihilate the rest of the dive team because they practically don’t do any damage to you lol
This is a more in depth positioning post, but i hope this helps. If you have any more questions, i’d be happy to help.
I’m a master roadhog main on console, but I dont play pc enough so im stuck in plat lol
I’m silver so I’ll take what I can get. Those are helpful, guess I will follow it up, I feel like I’m not getting a ton of kills at roadhog. I’ve got good enough hook accurraccy, but I hardly ever get above bronze kills. There are times I’m alright with this, like when I am protecting my healers and forcing flankers away, but I feel like I’m missing when to be agressive.
Keeping the enemy composition in mind like you suggested, when is it alright to move up and get in their face?
i have tested out this new hog and i don’t think flank hog is back, the direction devs are taking with new hog is someone who sticks with team and aids in shield breaking(still amazing at it),and peeling off flankers, especially beefy ones.(also hold on to hook cd if u suspect enemy pharah/reaper/etc is due for an ult.)
The best postion to move up is to know your counters.
Im sure since you seem to know the basics of hog, you probably know his counters already.
I would be aware of the most potent abilities. This mostly includes:
Devense Matrix (DVA), Sleep Dart/Anti-Nade (Ana), Armor Pack (Brig), Discord Orb (Zen), (and one that most people don’t consider) doomfist punch
(Doomfist punch can be extremely difficult to keep track of due to its low cooldown and it interrupts everything you do, displacing you in the process.)
Once these characters are out of the way, its good to move forward and secure kills. Don’t be afraid to press W, you’re fatter than you are.
BUT: ALWAYS ENCOURAGE YOUR TEAM TO MOVE UPWARD
roadhog is great in 1v1s but once your hook is down, you’re hoping on lucky shots
once you get focused, its really easy to deplete roadhog’s 600hp of absolute nothing but beef
Roadhog is best positioned in spawn and swapped to dva or zarya. Sure hog is good but dva and zarya and exceptional. If you rlly do want to play hog tho he’s a really good flanker, shield buster, and can peal his back line mediocre. Position behind maintank mostly unless you flank. Hog is however useless without hitting hooks and is a big ult feeder. He also has no protecting abilities, making him more of a dps than tank. So again, dva and zarya are 10x better
But hog is fun unlike Dva and Zarya.
