First and foremost, Roadhog’s hook is not a “one-shot”. It’s a combo. Similar to Sigma’s “one-shot” combo. This combo can be countered by… most abilities in the game. To name most of those abilities.
- Ana Sleep Dart
Sleep the enemy Roadhog while he is hooking your teammate.
- Ashe Coach Gun
Use coach gun to push the enemy Roadhog away from your teammate while he is hooking your teammate.
- Baptiste Lamp
Use lamp by throwing it to where your teammate is when they get reeled in by the enemy Roadhog’s hook
- Brigitte Shield Bash
Use shield bash to push the enemy Roadhog away while he is hooking in your teammate.
- D.va Boosters
Use boosters to push the enemy Roadhog away while he is hooking in your teammate.
- D.va Defense Matrix
Use defense matrix over your teammate when they get reeled in by the enemy Roadhog’s hook.
- Doomfist Rocket Punch
Use rocket punch to stun and push the enemy Roadhog away from your teammate while they are getting hooked.
- Doomfist Seismic Slam
Use seismic slam on the enemy Roadhog to CC him while he is reeling in your teammate.
- Genji Deflect
Dash into the enemy Roadhog while he hooking in your teammate, and use deflect to block his shot to save your teammate.
- Junkerqueen Jagged Blade
Use jagged blade to pull in the enemy Roadhog while he is hooking your teammate.
- Junkrat Concussion Mine
Use concussion mine on the enemy Roadhog while he is reeling in your teammate.
- Kiriko Protection Suzu
Use protection suzu on your teammate while they are being reeled in by the enemy Roadhog
- Lucio Boop
Use boop to push the enemy Roadhog away from your teammate while they are being reeled in.
- Mei Wall
Place the wall between the enemy Roadhog and your teammate while they are being reeled in.
- Orisa Javelin
Use javelin on the enemy Roadhog while they are hooking your teammate.
- Oria Javelin Spin
Use javelin spin to push the enemy Roadhog away from your teammate
- Pharah Concussive Blast
Use concussive blast on the enemy Roadhog to push them away from your teammate while they are being hooked in.
- Roadhog Hook
Counter-hook the enemy Roadhog while he is hooking your teammate
- Sigma Accretion Rock
Use rock to stun and push the enemy Roadhog away from teammate while he is hooking your teammate.
- Sombra Hack
Hack the enemy Roadhog while he is using hook on your teammate
- Wrecking Ball Roll
Roll into the enemy Roadhog while he is hooking in your teammate.
- Wrecking Ball Pile Drive
Use pile drive on the Enemy Roadhog while he is hooking your teammate
- Zarya Projected Barrier
Use projected barrier on your teammate while the enemy Roadhog is hooking your teammate
Secondly. Do you all remember what happened when Blizzard tried taking Roadhog’s combo away in 2017? It was an absolute disaster. Roadhog remained F-tier until he received major buffs including buffs to his weapon to make his combo consistent again.
Stylosa covered how massive of a disaster this nerf was for Roadhog. This nerf solidified the dive-meta until Brigitte’s arrival into the game.
Brigitte’s purpose at that time was to counter Dive. Before Brigitte, Roadhog did that job.
Lastly, I offer my advice. If nerfs are needed to Roadhog. Nerf something other than his combo and damage.

A lot of these abilities have travel time or require you to be in Hog’s immediate vicinity - you know, his danger zone. This makes it difficult to get the timing right, not to mention that the hog will also try and play around these abilities.
Ashe coach gun, for example, is almost never going to be used to prevent a hook because she is usually on high ground far away from roadhog.
When it comes to these things, it’s not so cut and dry. If roadhog wasn’t so effective at landing hooks (despite this list), he wouldn’t be such an issue

This is some pretty weak sauce counter man. Its almost like if these were anywhere within the realm of consistent then we wouldn’t even be talking about hog.
But we are. And these hog defenders refuse to acknowledge that these “counters” are not only slow, but they’re fundamentally reactive - so the hog always has the initiative on when to initiate hook to avoid said counters.
People who play at the highest level will go for an hour breaking down just how his presence alone changes how everyone now has to play to his tune.
I had more fun in GOATS meta than this filth landscape of hog doom sojourn (with the conjoined pocket mercy at the hip)

Only bronze to plat players think the one-shot combo is broken. Thats not what makes hog overpowered. As hog always had a one-shot since 2018, yet we only hear crying now.
Its his health + heal.
Revert his health back to 600.
Revert his heal back to 300.
Make his heal only reduce 35% of inc. damage instead of 50%

Coach gun isn’t to prevent hook its to disrupt him during or after hook and displace him. Same with a lot of those.
Then you weren’t paying attention.
Personally I don’t care about it. It’s not like he’s out flanking anymore. And that’s fine by me.

Wow my guy, its almost like you forgot that there is only 1 tank now and so you can’t have a 2nd tank to cover the gap.
GM players are having active hour long live stream talks about how busted hog is. Stop this trash that you think only metal ranks don’t like him and think hes bad for the game.
Hog wasn’t much of a problem in ow2 beta because no one knew about kiriko who pretty much wipes clean his vulnerabilities.

I didn’t say I only think metal ranks are the ones complaining. I said the metal ranks were complaining about the wrong aspects of his kit.
And you know what the solution is to this? Lower his HP pool and built in survivability. Not his damage.
Used to like when his gun had less damage but the fire rate was very nice. Miss this

No because that can put him on the verge of this weird glass canon of a tank, and lest we forget the entire point of the devs putting doom into the tank role and NOT keeping his one shot was because their “design philosophy” was to not have tanks one shotting.
Give his breather 35% damage reduction or a move speed penalty upon use. He is not fun to play against and he has way too much sustain.

Nerfs to his survivability make him some bastardized version of what a tank aught to be though, trying to make changes around his consistent ability to delete heroes will either make him totally irrelevant or inadvertently buff him

Sojourn is 100% balanced and shouldnt be changed by your arguements. Same abilities work on her kit AND she has to charge and maintain the charge her ability (cant just have it as a reliable cooldown). And his damage reduction and heal amount stack with even the slimmest healing from outside sources.

Splitting hairs to fluff a perspective isn’t a good start.
Sigma isn’t capable of OHK 250HP heros even if he squeezes a melee in. Hog can and requires significantly less mechanical skill to do.
Counter play does not automatically mean something is balanced or well designed.
For brevity sake I will not quote each “counter” you list but you’re really reaching with some of these.
You kind of gave yourself an answer to this discussion point you raise. Hog had other problems at the time which meant nerfing the “pick” potential he had dumpstered the character. Hog in OW2 is nowhere near where that hog was. Thus it’s not a good point to argue from.
I’d even go as far to say that if Hog actually depends that much on his ability to make picks in OW2 his design is flawed and needs changing. Having an unhealthy aspect to be usable isn’t the defense point you think it is. If we’re up in arms about Sojurn’s ability to one shot even though she needs a damage buff now (which is definitely correct to be upset about) then we shouldn’t be giving Hog a pass who literally doesn’t need any coordination to make his picks.
With Hog and DF dominating tank picks right now and Sojurn still existing as a near must pick the current meta is one shot meta which is unfun. And if you listen to casual players they will swear to you up and down that dive is meta in OW2 anyway despite Hog’s strengths. So this holds no water.
Would you rather have his heal/sustainability to push people off and control space or his OHK? Cause he can’t have both. Personally I think his kit should be scrapped nearly entirely because his design is inherently chaotic and it’s far too easy for him to become meta in OW2’s format.
