Even though he’s my most played Hero with well over 1000 hours over the course of 8 years, I haven’t really played Hog ever since they nerfed his one shot combo. Today I decided to give him another shot after playing him a ton in classic… and it’s terrible.
It’s not that he’s necessarily weak, but he’s just boring. Half of the time it doesn’t even feel like I’m playing Hog. I was used to going on the flank with him and having people respect my presence, but I can’t do that anymore…
But most importantly, he simply doesn’t feel like Roadhog anymore. His big shotgun has so much recoil, probably more than any other gun in Overwatch, yet he’s rapid-firing it?? It makes no sense. Why can he run around while healing, while his ability’s name is literally “take a breather”? Do people usually run around when they are “taking a breather”?? The trap doesn’t suit him either… it seems like they gave him that so he isn’t complete trash. They messed up this hero so bad and its just sad.

That’s the real problem. The rework turned him into a Honkai Star Rail auto-battle hero. Nobody wants to play that. Not even Hog mains…

Honestly I think that’s more of a 5v5 issue than a Hog-specific issue, though I see your point overall.
Mostly balance reasons. Standing still for an extended period of time is a death wish in a fast paced game of Overwatch. Maybe they could give it a movement speed reduction rather than a forced standstill like OG Hog but it’s not like Hog needs nerfs at the moment.
As far as the kit’s overall simplification goes I believe the goal was to make certain matchups (i.e. stuns and Ana) less polarizing, at least with TaB moving to M2. Kind of a similar situation to OG D.Va’s defense matrix now that I think about it.
Pig Pen I think exists to give Hog more “perceived” value by slowing enemies down, keeping them displaced from a hook combo for longer and setting them up to be easily killed (though there’s 80 million ways to just escape it so I’m unsure about its success).
Either way I don’t play Hog much, Ball is really the only Tank I regularly play (well, when I irregularly queue for Tank, at least), I’m just a slight game design nerd. Take what I say with a mild handful of salt here.

Not necessarily, it all depends on when and where you stand still. If you’re behind a barrier, or behind cover that may be an opportune moment to take a breather.
Tbh, if they revert it back to how it was, it may actually encourage skill in knowing when and where to use take a breather and when not to use it. This will most definitely not work in 5v5, but I believe it’s a possible change they could make in 6v6 granted they revert his burst damage as well.
I could tweak like 2 or three words in this and it would represent my thoughts on Reaper almost verbatim. I think this is a problem that every character in OW2 faces, even the “good ones” and it’s just sad that they aren’t doing anything about it.
Honestly starting to be tempted to play Marvel Rivals, even though I hate 3rd person shooters. Too many good things are happening over there that are making me re-realize just how poorly Blizzard treats its fans.

This is true, but I figured with the damage reduction it gives, as well as 5v5 solo tanking, Blizzard is intending for it to be used for facetanking nowadays. After all, damage reduction doesn’t do much when you’re not even in LoS.
If you think Hog got it bad for a rework, wait until you try Sombra!
But in all likelihood you probably just need to get used to playing him again before you can really make any sweeping judgements. You can still Hook Combo with extra steps. It’s a bit janky, but I guess I prefer not having to decide when you left vs right click anymore, and to be fair I very rarely got those sweet, sweet right-click one-shots.
In terms of being able to move for Breather and the damage reduction, along with the improved fire rate (and more than 4 shots), I don’t hate those things. Playing OWC Hog was both clunky AND janky, I’ll say that much.

The destruction of Hog was one of the straws that broke the camels back for me in why I stopped playing. My favourite tank was turned into trash. Same with all my other favourites, Sombra’s trashing and the never improving matchmaker being the final straws.
I don’t expect the current balance team leadership to fix anything as there’s clear bias in who they leave overtuned.

At least he is getting reverted for 6v6, so we will be able to enjoy him once again.

I’m optimistic about that, but thing is, to which version will be reverted to?
Also, I know you’re avid about giving your opinions on Roadhog, so I wanted to ask you, what would you say was the best version of Hog in the game’s history? Keep in mind, that I’m not asking when we was the most powerful necessarily, but when was he the best for the game (balance and health wise), and for the hero itself.
I would say end of ow1 hog was the best and the most balanced version of hog. This is the version im hoping he gets reverted to.
