RIP Win7 - Hello Linux

So, Microsoft will be ceasing support for Windows 7 on 14th January 2020.

I think I’m going to stick it out for a bit until I’m basically forced to re-roll the OS, or get a new OS.

Personally, I believe there is only one alternative to Windows 7 - Linux. I don’t believe Windows 10 is an option (#neverwindows10).

It would also seem that Linux is going to get a huge chunk of the market share once Win7 is over:

With that said, there’s a couple different methods that Linus covered to get Windows games working seamlessly on Linux.

One of the best way to run games on Linux, is using Valve’s Proton as mentioned.

However, Overwatch isn’t on Steam, and Blizzard will basically never put their games on Steam, so Proton is out of the picture.

This still leaves us with a couple of options but the best one would be to use a “Rabbit Hole” method (as Linus called it) to get games that aren’t on Steam working on Linux.

I’m wondering if anyone here plays Overwatch on Linux and can share their experience.

I’m also wondering if the developers would like to consider optimizing their game for Linux (we can make it run on there ourselves). It’s a longshot, but you don’t know if you don’t ask.

Update: Thanks to BootLoxes for his work on getting OW working with Proton!

I haven’t tried it, but I thought Overwatch was running on Linux via Wine?

You didnt even bother to ask your beloved Bootloxes about this. I am hurt. I was the one to figure out how to get proton working on overwatch (flexes intensely) and informed the internet on how. Proton and Overwatch together is life

Windows 10 is nice… I mean it’s great support, very easy to find stuff, etc.

windows 10 is fine after you scrape away the bloatware…

I tried running native games like tf2 in Manjaro. Ran worse than it does on Windows. Tried Overwatch through Lutris. It worked, but no text for some reason. Could barely navigate the main menu so that was a bust.

Wow dude, thank you!

No I did not! I just assumed it wouldn’t! (and clearly I missed the news, sorry!)

This is amazing news!!

Why is it so important not to use Windows 10?

My only issue is you can’t disable windows updates.

So I blocked Microsoft’s IP address via my network settings. Only downside is I can’t access the Microsoft Store.

Wait, did I say there was a downside?

W10 is pretty slick if you can separate them ramming their services down your throat. I’ll manage my own systems thx macronsot

At some point i totally wanna try running overwatch in linux…

I got Overwatch running on Linux literally yesterday.

I used a program call Lutris

My brother did most of the work, we definitely had to just through some hoops but we got it going with minimal performance issues. I had some lag but I also need a new router so I think it was just my internet.

Windows 10 is fine.
Plenty of ways to outright disable data recording. (shutup10) and windows automatic updates etc
Just do a fresh install disable most the crap and use shutup10 to turn of everything else.
Its seriously a non issue.

What services are they ramming down your throat?

On a fresh install, I pretty much just turn everything off, install Chrome and dropbox and I’m good to go.

If I were a bit more paranoid I might use Shutup10
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

But with a lot of the defaults off I’m fine.

They make it a chore to switch your default apps, automatic updates, forced shutdowns/restarts, some games only accessible through the microsoft store. Overall, it’s not enough to make me switch OS.

I think you need to download some microsoft text software to fix that problem.

I gotchu fam. I recommend the proton route (which is a modified version of the lutris build) since it eliminated the microstutter found in the lutris build

You can disable updates, you can turn it off with the group policy if you have the pro version. Heck, I dont have access to the store either, only because I dont have to delete candy crush for the 1000th time
