I’m sorry but I can’t put myself through the torture of watching that garbage. Anyways, he lost those animation cancels over a week ago with just about every Reinhardt player noticing immediately. They were removed either because: A. Another bug for Reinhardt or B. Blizzard thought Reinhardt of all characters felt unfair/unfun to play against.
This was talked about early in the game’s life cycle.
Basically, the Overwatch team sees animation cancels as extra abilities that most players only learn about through other players, and therefore they are somewhat elitist tactics that are unintentionally propelling otherwise equal players higher than they should.
It also makes it difficult to balance characters because it may be that a character is very balanced with animation cancles and yet they could be underpowered without them.
Which makes it impossible to buff these characters without making players who use animation cancles perform far better than what was intended.
Yet, it’s often what seperates a good player versus a bad player.
A Doomfist who doesn’t animation cancel his abilities vs one that does
A Genji who doesn’t animation cancel his abilities vs one that does
A Tracer who doesn’t animation cancel hers abilities vs one that does
A Reinhardt who doesn’t animation cancel his abilities vs one that does
That’s just the few out of my head but I am sure other heroes animation cancel as well
And there are other heroes with little tricks, most often not intended, like Helix Rocket Jump, Zarya Jump, Mercy Bunnyhop that simply sets you apart from those that don’t.
It’s a way for players to express their skill and mastery over their hero.
I could imagine Genji without animation cancels, he would be so clunky and very underpowered, his skill ceiling would drop tremendously as almost his entire kit relies on animation cancelling.
Any and all animation cancels should be taken out. its exploiting how 2 actions interact with each other to achieve an advantage over another player. ie ITS CHEATING.
By this logic, they should also remove shield hopping, and Ana’s sleep - kill combo for 200HP heroes as well any map techs like Ana 'nades and Grav lobs.
It’s an advantage that everyone can attain through time and practice, therefore it is not cheating.
Imagine characters like Genji Doomfist and Tracer without animation cancels, they would be almost garbage entirely as their kits would become too predictable since they were meant to combo certain abilities together.
And I can speak for Genji and Doomfist at least, it’s what seperates the golds from the GMs in some cases.
How is it cheating if everyone can do it then? It’s like saying getting better at the game is cheating just because you kill more players than someone else.
The better players spend a lot of time learning animation cancelling and often times it’s what makes the characters balanced, Genji would have a 1 second delay between everything if there were no cancelling, he’d be garbage and more predictable than brigitte.
Heres a perfect example
Good Genjis: Animation cancel Fan with every ability, animation cancel deflect with swift strike, animation cancel any ability with dragonblade (swipe+strike is a prime example) animation cancel melee with dragonblade. The greater ones also perform successful ghost dashes.
Bad Genjis: Use every ability without animation cancelling, leaving them to be so predictable and easily shut down.
Whether you call it cheating or not is irrelevant. The developers could literally say using the spacebar is cheating and you could not refute that because they make the rules in their game. The underlying issue is that the developer’s care less about fostering the players ability to learn from eachother and improve and push heros and their kits to their limits and more about making everyone’s skill ceilings more or less the same.
You can’t have someone going into a game and knowing less about their character’s skill ceiling than someone who’s invested time into learning and mastering all the nuances, right? That’d be unthinkable, right?
Balancing around animation cancels is not difficult because you can predict the maximum potential. You can very clearly define the limits and enforce them. If one is too powerful, sure, you can always remove it or nerf it - but to call them all cheating and say they don’t belong is just naive. The hero and map synergies alone are something the developers can’t possibly plan for in every situation, and guess what? You can only learn those (effectively) by playing with, and against, other players. You do not learn them from the training range, you do not learn them from the help menu, you do not learn them vs AI. They are different concepts, but the result is the same - the player who invests time into learning them has an inherent advantage that a new player could not possibly predict.
They’ve proven time and time again that they don’t consider all of the heros interactions with eachother when they balance this game, which is obvious by how blatantly broken certain hero synergies have become. So for them to say those unintended synergies and making use of them is not cheating, yet making use of a very predictable mechanic like animation cancelling simply because someone on red team doesn’t know about them is, is naive.
She used to be able to shoot, melee, grenade, then shoot. They nerfed it by removing the melee cancel, much like they removed the genji melee from his right click melee dash combo.
If what they were suggesting came true, Doomfist, Genji, Tracer, Reaper, Roadhog, Soldier, Junkrat and any other hero who pretty much relies on animation cancelling to either have a high skill ceiling or be viable, just became trash tier.
It’s a skill that takes time and effort to learn and time well, pros should be rewarded for putting the time and effort in, not have power stripped from them because little jimmy can’t one shot combo roadhogs hook.
