Retribution: New desire for Talon Soldier Hero

This event has really made me want to have a Talon soldier in the game. A new offense hero.

My brother and I were discussing his weapon and abilities but had a harder time coming up with lore to make a Talon soldier stand out from all other grunts. Maybe make him a Talon commander? Maybe he completed a mission and it impressed Doomfist?

Name: ?
Role: Offense
Health: 200
Appearance: Slightly larger than 76 but smaller than Doomfist. Very buff. Almost looks like the Shotgun mobs in Retribution. Head to toe body armor.

With this hero, we wanted to add some things that are found in most classic FPS, but don’t exist in Overwatch yet.

Here is a run down of his kit:

Talon Assault Rifle: Primary Fire - Burst AR

For his weapon, we were thinking about a Assault Rifle, but have it only be burst fire with an alt fire mode. 76 is fully auto, but the spread encourages you to use burst. Talon AR would only be burst, no auto. No one uses burst fire in the game right now.

This weapon is also unique because it would be the first weapon in the game that you could use ADS (aiming down sight). FPS are known for having ADS, yet no one can do this.

  • Type: Burst fire hitscan
  • Damage: 11.7 - 5 per bullet
  • Range: 25 - 45 meters
  • Spread: Pure burst fire so weapon has very little to no spread. Very accurate weapon.
  • Ammo: 30 clip. Fires 3 bullets per shot
  • Rate of fire: 2 shot per seconds
  • Reload: 1.5 seconds
Talon Assault Rifle: Alt Fire - Electric Grapple

So, since we are using a keybinding for the ADS, to access the Alt Fire mode on this weapon, you will “switch weapons” like you would on Mercy or Torb. Doing this will reposition the Talon soldiers hand, so he holds the weapon differently.

Underneath the weapon, there is a Electric Grapple. Exactly like the ones in the Recall short: Overwatch Animated Short | "Recall" - YouTube

When you use the Grapple, you can not use Primary Fire, or any or your abilities. Using your ult or ability will cancel the Grapple. Switch weapons again to go back to Burst Fire.

  • Type: Target Locked Grapple
  • Damage: 6.7/second constant electric damage while the Grapple remains locked to target. While the Grapple is locked to target, you can amp up the damage to 13.4/second for 3 seconds on a 3 second recharge
  • Range: 5 meters. Grapple will break if the target moves more than 5 meters from you
  • Cooldown: Once target breaks the Grapple or dies, Electric Grapple goes on a 4 second cooldown
  • Bonus: While the Electric Gapple is connected to a target, they are locked out of all abilities (not passives). Target can still use primary weapons like normal.
Ability 1: Overload

This ability will overload your weapon, causing your primary fire to do more damage. (The barrel tip becomes heated and glows red)

  • Damage: Increases primary fire damage by 60%
  • Duration: 2 seconds
  • Cooldown: 7 seconds
Ability 2: Smoke Grenade

Another staple of FPS is using a grenade. When you use this ability, the Talon soldier pulls a grenade from his chest armor and holds his arm back, ready to throw. If you use the ability again, it cancels the grenade. The Talon soldier can not use his AR while aiming the grenade.

While aiming the grenade, a guide line will show up, showing the player where the grenade will be thrown and where it will land. This is only visible to the player. The grenade can only bounce off any surface once.

The player can hold the grenade for as long as he want. Fuse isn’t activated until the player throws the grenade.

  • Damage: 55 explosion damage, 15 per second while in smoke cloud
  • Fuse: 2 seconds after launch
  • Duration: Smoke lasts for 3 seconds
  • Cooldown: 10 seconds
  • Radius: 4 meters
  • Bonus: When the grenade explodes, it leaves behind a tiny cloud of black smoke that deals damage to players in the smoke. Smoke also blocks line of sight
Ultimate: Dark Shadows

Ult line: “Into the Shadows…”

When the Talon soldier activates his ult, small canisters on his armored backpack open up, releasing a large cloud of black smoke (same smoke effect on Smoke Grenades). The smoke cloud comes out of the Talon armor, so the cloud does follow the player around. (like a Lucio aura)

Dark Shadows will block line of sight for everyone. If an enemy McCree has members of your team locked on, using your ult will hide any friendly players in range of your smoke, however, friendly players can not see through this smoke either. (This smoke will also break things like a Sym beam locked on to you or your team, same for Winston, etc)

Because of the Talon armor mask, only the Talon soldier can see through the smoke. The Talon soldier will see enemies highlighted in red.

Any allies, including the Talon soldier, in the smoke will receive a 25% damage reduction. Enemies can still fire into the smoke from far away, but they can’t see through it.

Any enemies in the smoke will take 15 damage per second until they leave the smoke.

  • Damage: 15 per second
  • Damage reduction: 25% to self and allies
  • Duration: 7 seconds
  • Radius: 7 meters
  • Bonus: Dark Shadows breaks all target locked weapons and abilities, breaks line of sight and only the Talon soldier can see through the smoke. Enemies are highlighted in red for (visible to player only) for duration of ult
Passive: Combat Training

Double tapping any movement key will allow the Talon soldier to preform a very fast roll in said direction.

  • Cooldown: Internal cooldown of 3 seconds
  • Range: 4.5 meters
  • Bonus: While rolling, Talon soldier gets a 50% damage reduction

That’s pretty much it!

This hero would counter dive heroes and mobility with his Electric Grapple and his ult could be used defensively to save the point and allies or to turn a losing battle in his favor.

Tell me what you guys think or any suggestions. Love feedback!

Long read, but worth it! Great concept. I would love another hitscan hero. A Talon Commander sounds awesome.

I would love to launch that electric grapple on a Genji or Tracer and watch them struggle

This is actually a fairly good concept for a hero definitely will need balancing but that can be left for when the hero is programmed/being made the electric grapple wasn’t specific on what it would actually do I’m assuming it’s the same thing as the Gibraltar short with Winston and reaper the problem I have with it is the smoke ability (ult) shouldn’t do damage if it’s gonna be moving, be a hard counter to lock on, and cover sight line entirely. The damage resistance should be 5% or so too, besides that very well made concept

Awe. Thanks. I made this so long ago. lol.

But yea, this is an open design and totally willing to change things and tweak numbers. The ideas I was throwing out are a starting point and I think it would be cool to have someone like this in Overwatch.
