#retirebastion - no really

Hear me out.
Bastion is a meme at gm/T50.
Bastion breaks metal ranks.
Bastion absolutely breaks arcades.
Bastion plays almost no role in OW lore.
There is no other hero that demands attention in the same way but has such a low skill floor.
Bastion is the source of enormous amounts of deflation and emotional exhaustion in lower ranks. Basically, a bastion shows up on one team, the other team either gives up or tries to counter, then it’s just bastion v. bastion with 5 supporting characters. Often the first team fight loss to a Bastion leads to someone rage-quitting and ruining the game for the other 11 players.
Postgame, regardless of who wins: guaranteed toxicity and anger over how un-fun it is to play in a match with Bastion… like, why keep doing this? Just fracking retire them.

I’m torn between liking Bastion for helping brand new players not feel useless, and disliking him for probably driving away more new players than any other hero. On balance he is probably negative for the game. But they already said he is getting reworked (he kind of had to be a 1 tank limit weakens him).

I’m surprised it’s just BvB with supporting characters… when I see so many other posts about Widow v Widow, or Rein v Rein… but I get this is just another biased anti-(insert name here) thread.

Bastion is fine… lore-wise and game-wise. Sure, I’d like to see some changes with him… but removed? Nah, fam.

I get that you’re probably coming off a loss where some random Bastion swap wrecked your whole team… because, let’s be honest, you wouldn’t be here complaining if Bastion just won it for your team… but maybe take a breath next time before coming to the forums with emotionally charged bad ideas. Getting outplayed rarely makes for objective, well-thought out suggestions. Just sayin. Lol.

No. I like him. He has the Overwatch theme as a voiceline.

Get some friends. Switch to long-ranged heroes. Focus the Bastion.

Optionally, not exclusive to the above: hire yourself a good Junkrat.

I’m fairly sure this is incorrect - blizz devs said something along the lines of ‘Bastion plays a big role in OW2’ iirc

Otherwise I kind of agree? I’m not sure if we need to remove him entirely but his rework in OW2 needs to be such a massive change to his design philosophy that I wonder how much of the same character he will be.

nope. win some lose some. it’s just boring af and it’s bad for the game and the community to keep such a broken hero in rotation.

/sigh Man, that is some big brain stuff right there… how did I not think of that?

Lowest pick rate across the board except bronze, which is, of course, where the majority of players, especially new ones, are ranked and Bastion sees a 10% pick rate there. That’s 1/10 of matches decided by a bastion. Doesn’t sound bad, but is, in fact, a gamebreaking pick. It creates toxicity, anger, and frustration unnecessarily. There’s no reason to keep Bastion in rotation as is. #retirebastion

Obviously not. Bastion’s role in lore is: random leftover battlebot that developed a friendship with a bird. Bastion’s lack of speech allows players to project whatever emotion they choose to the boopbeeps. It’s a gimmick and a bad one at that. If you need a lore reason, then fine, have Basboy go on a retreat until they’re completely reworked in a way that doesn’t ruin the fun of the game.

I don’t see the point of randomly deleting a hero right now, he will probably get reworked for OW2

By and large I felt he just needed a Symetera level rework, hopefully better planned.

The main problems he has is being immobile in a fast paced game and his recon mode being fairly useless and just a larger, slower Soldier without helix rockets.

A rework for bastion would be imo swapping his tank mode (with a dmg decrease) ult to being the alt form. Making turret (with a dmg increase) his new Ultimate. A mostly static form that does a lot of dmg is closer to what Roadhog gets after all.

Speed up his transformations and your mostly good. I’d love to see something added to the Recon mode to make it more useful. Either a stealth mechanic to let him sneak up on people easier or perhaps something akin to sonic arrows added to detect enemies.

But well that would take effort and all we get are bare bones “balance changes” in where they shuffle some numbers around.

In response to everyone who keeps saying this…
OW2 is at least 1 and closer to 2 years away… That’s a LONG TIME to keep a broken hero in rotation.

#retirebastion

The problem with that argument is at any given time there are about 20 broken hero’s in the game. 6-10 hero’s are allowed to be Meta… the rest are just there. If your going by “least picked hero” well news flash… if you delete bastion some one else will be least picked now.

It’s a never ending cycle of destruction. I don’t think reworks in general work, Blizzard seems to lack the talent or ability to do them properly. Their balance teams seem very short sighted and lack any idea of what playing the game is like…

But just giving up on a hero is a bad thing to do when it’s been almsot 2 years since we got the last new hero. Even before that it was about 3-4 months between new hero release… With a content update rate like that you can’t just delete hero’s.

OMGOSH is that how lists work? … … … That’s obviously not a fair reconstruction of my argument at all.

Rather snappy reply… for being so wrong. Over a year since Echo, almost a year between echo and Sigma. Not exactly proving your point. I didn’t say two years, I said almsot two years… and it looks more like it’s going to be 2 or 3 before OW 2 comes out and we get more heros.

You can’t just delete people randomly with update rates like that. Never mind most hero’s release broken. Either stupidly OP or utterly useless and taking years for updates to make them decent.

I mean if you think bastion is bad Sombra, Symetra are all pretty much just as bad.

Not just a bird… a friendship with “not a dwarf.” Lol.

You know, aside from being the design for the basic foot solider for the entire omic crisis.

You’ve obviously never enjoyed the satisfaction of mowing down a Bastion with Mercy’s pistol.

Maybe they’d move up if they learned a little teamwork.

He’s being reworked from the ground up for OW2 IIRC.

We just going to ignore the fact the Torb let him in and rebuilt him, not only a critical member of OW but one that has a past of hating Omnics. Yet he still did it. That is a substantial change for Torbs character which is anything but “no role”. Not to mention his kind were the main attacking force in the Omnic war, something OW played a huge part in and many of the heroes like Zarya. Leading to interesting interacitons with them that can be further explored in OW2.

The players who overcome this and learn to counter him by oh Idk, swapping to Junkrat, hog or Ana and raise in the ranks and better themselves. Those who moan and rage quit the second they see a Bastion will complain about Reaper, soldier, monkey, roadhog or any hero who can roll through and entire team if left to their own device. Should we go through sledgehammering any hero who can do this because bronze and silver players can’t be bothered to learn the game they are playing?

No, you either overcome the obstacle and better yourself as a player or stay forever in the lower ranks. That is what a good game is all about, overcoming obstacles. Not going “This too hard please delete so I don’t need to improve”.
