Required Linked Phone Number For Ranks DIamond and Up

Blizzard has a pretty impactful place in the esports scene and generally promotes it a lot through their game or outside of it. However they allow “alternate accounts” (Usually referred to as smurf accounts) of high rank players.

This ruins the gameplay experience for the majority of the player-base considering that the top 10% is irrefutably a small portion when compared to the other 90%. All this information is accessible if searched up. In this case it would be "esportstales overwatch competitive rank distrubution pc and console".

To lower the amount of “alternate accounts” that ruin the gameplay experience (Which I feel is equivalent to the “Gameplay Sabotage” report category) linked phone numbers must be required for “Diamond” ranked players or higher to continue to play in the “competitive” game mode and have an established reputation prior to attempting to join any tournaments, teams, or be on the leaderboard.

This will not impact the experience of the player-base if non-registered players queue with non-registered players, while registered players queue with registered players. If they want to play in a competitive setting and not be recognized then by all means feel free. The argument of being skilled enough to climb would be relevant in registered servers and smurfs can go practice with their main unharmed in non-registered. If you genuinely do not feel it will impact your experience, feel free to have that option disabled as a registered player so that you can get faster queue times. Otherwise in the current state, “alternate accounts” should be bannable.

The argument of being skilled enough to move up regardless of imbalanced teams (against players on accounts that are falsely representing their actual skill level) is invalid due to the obvious fact that they will have more impact on the game no matter what role they are playing. Experience cannot be instantaneously gained as well, it is fairly obvious a silver or gold doomfist cannot magically know all the rollouts in the game if he is truly new (As funny as it is to see). There are ranks/recognition in everything competitive for a reason.

Blizzard supports the idea of “fair gameplay” by having SR gap restrictions when partying for competitive play so it is hypocritical of them to take no action. Other examples include actively regulating other tournaments not constructed by them (via license), having requirements to participate in the overwatch league, and simply having a leaderboard.

There is also a boosting community and hacking community that are against the terms due to it being dishonest gameplay. Playing on an alternate account is equivalent to dishonest gameplay. I’m sure you can’t competitively sub the #1 player in their respective sport with any person and expect equivalent results.

I hope Blizzard looks into more ways to lower this type of Gameplay Sabotage. I appreciate all they have done for the game and do not regret my purchase, but the earlier they look into higher quality solutions, the better future products will be.
