So, if you haven’t noticed the colossal Widowmaker’s rear end of a storm in the forums recently… you’re living under a rock, and need to hurry and grasp for air, because we’re going deep into a toxic zone.
That’s right… L G B T. Yeah, I said it. The forbidden word, the curse you couldn’t ever say. Recently, there has been a BUNCH of talk on representation. Now, when it comes to representation, it’s usually not a bad thing. I find it enjoyable to challenge myself when I come up with characters (out of boredom) to maybe shape a character around a particular culture, or belief. Hell, I always found Japanese myths to be very entertaining. However, there is always TOO MUCH and TOO LITTLE of something.
The two arguments are as follows…
In a nutshell it’s basically:
Person 1: We need more representation!
Person 2: We don’t need anymore.
Yeah, that’s the gist of things. Now, there is obviously an extreme to every side. There will always be people that claim you to be anti-LGBT for thinking there is a limit on representation, and then there will be legitmate people that are actually anti-LGBT, and hate representation. Through all of this silver team comp of a mess, there is actually some interesting questions to ask;
"Is there ever TOO much representation? What is too little? Is there ever enough?
All three of this have a bit of a subjective answer. While I say; "There is obviously a limit to representation… however it’s not a bad thing. Don’t let it corrupt your story level, just some casual representation. I personally always enjoyed when the sexualities were subtle, and not right in your face.
Others will say; Of course there isn’t! Representations is very healthy for stories, and it is great to see multiple races, etc! Representation everywhere!
So how do we find a compromise?
Truth is, we probably ever won’t. Things will stay the same way. We will probably get the LGBT character we were promised, and it’ll be cool. Blizzard probably won’t actually answer to either extreme, and things will be normal.
Then what was the point of this post?
To hopefully shed some light on both sides. There will never be an answer when it comes to representation. It’s better to just agree to disagree, rather than argue. Also Blizzard won’t ever appeal to either extreme.
