Sorry if this Is more topical and off the subject for the game itself, but I noticed people making fun of me for my job and what I think us right and wrong.
Basically I said if the voice actress of Ashe left the job because of a political reason, I personally think it’s stupid. You should never, ever mix that stuff with your career, and that’s why I think things like social media is a huge bane to alot of workers because they are either too young or not bright enough to realize you dont break your contract. Also as a personal note, I have medical Bill’s to pay for a disease I’ve had since I was a kid, and paying that comes first before rallying behind the Chinese protest to get me fired. You guys can call me all the names in the world, but say that to one of my older coworkers who had to pay for his wife’s cancer treatment, and my company was wonderful enough to give them extra time off and try to help.
Here was the original reply to the people making fun of me:
"That’s funny because I’ve worked at the same company for 12 years now ever since I was 18 (I know, I unheard of because people my age like having a hundred jobs), but yeah my place is loyal to the employees and it’s a great place. I’ll be able to retire with the savings plans they have when i hit 50, something alot of people cant do.
And to the person saying I’m the new low; is that right? What the fact that its in our agreement when we sign up not to talk about politics and religion at work? You guys either never had a real job, or are just nasty to people, but those policies work pretty well and nobody ever fights at my job and everyone gets along with each other. I know, impossible right?"
if someone believes in something , they have the right to do what they want, why is it stupid? not everything is about the money, and i wouldnt count freedom of speech and basic human rights violation political reason, she left because of that right? not because of US president ?
This was the comment that made players “made fun” of you:
It’s fine if you want to be loyal to a company, but you shouldn’t expect the company to be loyal to you either.
You have the right to disagree, you have the right to oppose certain statements and opinions and you have the right to protest. At least, this is how it is in my country. It could be different in your country.
I dont know the whole story here. But politics aside. Jobs are SCARCE and unfortuantly people have been applying too much social pressure towards employees and everyone else.
I may not agree with someone’s political ideas. But employees do NOT have the finale say what a company does or does NOT do. The owners do.
Just like a CERTAIN cereal oats company did some VERY seedy stuff in 1949. Means that it wasn’t entirely the employees fault that worked there (some yes). Regardless I voted with my feet and will NEVER buy their product. But I wont write bad statements directly about the employees.
It’s great that you have a job that you feel has earned your loyalty, but that’s not true of everyone. It’s reasonable that you value income and stability over standing up for the ideals you want to see valued by society, but that’s not true of everyone.
If everyone behaved as you did, the world would not have continously made progress throughout the centuries. If nobody behaved as you did, the world would be chaos.
It’s not dumb to prioritize the things you value in your life. What is dumb is thinking that the way you do things is the way everyone should do them.
He’s part of the 10% that does 60% of the productivity. The people that hold up workers in traffic or cringy protest signs owe it to us. We stop working it grinds to a halt. Basically, people are tired of hearing how important people feel their voices are.
In reality they have wayyy too much time on their hands, time better spent working and adding real, tangable value. Activism is good, but its a bit out of control. Especially as we all, at least in the US have equal opportunity of outcome.
The US does NOT have equal opportunity of outcome. Class mobility is less than it has been in the past. The middle class is shrinking. And there are serious issues outside of that, that some activist fight for. The VA in particular was not happy with the poor way developers in the video game industry are treated and that’s a valid concern.
That Twitter has made slacktivism easy, or because some people are annoying in what or how they protest don’t change that. You also don’t know anything about how much personal sacrifice or work many of these people do, that’s just a poor potshot because they are doing something you don’t like.
For the sake of people seeing this topic of discussion for the first time, I want to clarify a couple of things:
First, voice actors aren’t (generally) salaried employees of a game company. They’re contracted for a set of recordings, potentially taking contracts from several different companies over a short period, and they don’t work for a company beyond that. While the repercussions depend on the exact terms of their active contract with a company (if any), an actor can stop providing voice work to that company at the time of their choosing, or the company can simply not request additional voice work. It’s not really the same as quitting or firing, since the actor wasn’t an employee in the first place.
Second, Jennifer Hale (voice of Ashe) has previously stated as a that she fully supports Blizzard and will continue to assist them however she can. To my knowledge, there has been no public comment to suggest that her sentiments, or Blizzard’s, have changed on that matter. The conjecture about her “leaving” is purely based on the absence of new Ashe voice lines in the past few events.
While I don’t really agree with OP, as much of a right as the VA has to leave they have just as much of a right to call it stupid. Hypocritical might be a better argument but admittedly your argument has also fallen in the hypocritical basket.
Questioning his logic isn’t hypocrisy. She didn’t question his right to call it stupid, nor did she say having a right to do something made it not stupid to do. She asked why he felt exercising that right was stupid. Pretty different.
Oh for Marx sake can we stop bringing up politics on the OW forum?
As much as i like discusing in, it always end up with some idiots saying stuff i would love to punch them for.
Fair point, maybe I read too deeply there with the “why” when it’s an opinion but you’re correct she didn’t say he was wrong really just pointing out the VA indeed has a right to do what she did.
Well after reading a little bit, seems as if her twitter disagreed with Activision’s strangling of Blizzard’s dev teams.
It’s less political, but more based around the inner workings of the company itself. If it’s political or not is up to one’s perspective.
Edit: I don’t ever reading anything about HK, yeah. From her at least.
If she wanted to leave good - but I also can’t find anything other than RUMOURS of her having left too, and I don’t play chinese whispers online so just shut it until/if you get confirmation she is no longer going to work with blizz as the voice of ashe.
She just criticized them as far as I can tell after the layoffs - the rest? Y’all are gossiping about crap that may or may not be true, and no one likes a gossip.
You do realise Jennifer Hale complained about the 800 people being fired while they made a decent profit off the back of their work? None of her complaints stemmed from HK because it wasn’t even in the news, that was several months later.
She’s also said she would still work with the Overwatch team and spoke highly of them. She is a well know VA (world record holder) and Ashe’s character is limited story wise so it doesn’t exactly fit a larger narrative.
Your just stretching a rumor to fit your narrative that doesn’t even match.
Yeah sorry but that’s BS, especially coming from the person saying middle class people can’t be loyal to a company and have decent values at the same time. My salary is considered middle and I still pay alot of Bill’s because of my medical problems that I’ve had as a child. It makes me sick to think you guys would throw away Medicare over doing a protest. But you’ve probably never been on deaths door before either from a disease.
