Replacing Ping and RTT with Latency

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the various ways connection is reported in-game over the last couple of days since this change was pushed through, and it does indeed seem the game, as a whole, is slightly slower now. I’ve double-checked my connection with other games and observed no increase in connection speed there; Overwatch on both PC and PS4 are the only games which are coming out slower than they were previously. Obviously everyone may experience different figures, but for me it’s an increase of approximately 6ms ping and 17ms full latency over the previous ping & latency. That may not sound like much, but it’s equivalent to about +33% and is enough to cause me to account for an additional local frame of lag on my end and that rolls over into three local frames/one server frame of lag in total. Overwatch’s heavy-handed interp means that’s not much of a change for projectiles, but for tick and hitscan (Tracer’s blink and Sombra’s translocate, too), it’s enough to feel worse.

Additionally, I have continued to observe that the full latency report in the network graph and the small latency report in the top left corner continue to not match up. I stress again, you have two measurements which are both labelled the same yet giving different figures. That’s just plain bad; the two can’t both be correct, so either you’ve mislabelled one of the measurements or one of the measurements is inaccurate.

And I feel the need to reiterate all my previous points toward the start of this thread, that 1) ‘LATENCY’ is really obnoxious, 2) keep the UI consistent in the menu rather than having elements pop in and out, 3) knowing my own one-way ping is far, far more important than knowing the full circle latency, both in general terms* and for advanced frame counting, which has been a standard pro gaming technique since I was competing in Unreal Tournament '99; it’s kind of shocking to see a game like Overwatch disregard that so casually. Anybody who works on a multiplayer shooter (or fighting game, too) should know full well why having a single ping measurement available to players at all times is so important, and has been so important in every game for so long. This can be information you offer different options for, but it is not information you ever outright replace.

(*A ping reading tells you your own single connection and is a good enough indication of what your full circle latency will be; the reverse is not true and full circle latency can not tell you anything about the connection in any single direction. In other words, a one-way ping measurement can do what a full circle latency measurement does and more, but a full latency measurement can’t do what a single ping measurement does. In short, this is reduced functionality with zero benefit.)

Oh really Blizzard?
I can’t play a proper match since the patch, high ping, delay, WTF Blizzard???

But i only want to see my ping. it shouldn’t of been merged. My “Latency” has also been much worse since this update. it used to be fine, but now everything lags and zips around

Ping is higher than it was, not only showing up higher, but really higher. It feels like that…

It’s not placebo. The game is definitely laggier now. Haven’t been able to play a match without lag and ping spiles since the Brigitte patch.

I’m not a great widow maker by all means my rank is 1800-1900 so yeah i’m not great at all, but thing is prior to these changes, I didn’t have much of an issue clicking on heads as widow maker or even body shots, it my cross hair was in place the marker would tick and dmg would apply, Now since these changes that’s completely Different… I See the hit marker but no dmg is applied, Or i click on a head and it registers as a Body shot instead when it was clearly a head shot, Or you know its a clear head shot or even just a hit in general but is registered as a miss instead… These changes were a bad idea really and have made a bad impact to the game itself overall in player performance, Looked good on paper but turned out really bad once applied, Please revert these changes they aren’t doing anyone any favors. Again like i said at the beginning i’m like high silver, i’m no Widow God so yeah i miss shots a lot of shots but it feels disgusting to be missing shots i shouldn’t be missing, i’m not that bad at this game, But now i feel like i’m utter trash when playing any form of hit scan due to these changes. In accuracy terms i went from 40-50% accuracy before changes to 30% or less after the changes… I get the feeling i’m not the only one who has noticed this either just haven’t read through all the comments yet lol

Edit: Also i don’t Really Play Widow outside of Arcade so in No limits atm and whenever i get her in Mystery or if im feeling Daring on tackling the massive SR Differences in DM, I Play RoadHog mainly everywheres else, And since these Changes to the Ping stuff, i have literally watched my Hook go through people but not actually connect and hook them in… Also my ping stat prior to change was a steady 40-50, now its 60-70+ “Latency” Sometimes it even skyrockets to 140 range…

My ping spikes constantly every match, it’ll slow then all of a sudden everything speeds up and this keeps happening and going into the 500 range or higher, my ping only started getting laggy after the update. Please fix this… I know it’s not my internet because I did online tests that all told me I’m around 25 normally.

okey your saying it have 0 effeckt on the game play? SURE why is it laggging like a 200 ms game now then after this rtarded patch!!! game was so perfect 5 seasons before now the game is unstable as hell!

Huh. I was wondering where that went…

Yeah this is unplayable. I don’t even want to try to go into comp just because it’s been so bad. Please revert this change or fix it.

I tried to wait it out and just like everyone here, I feel the lag.

I honestly dont care about the explanation in how it changed. I can see and feel it. When my input is lagging behind and my char is moving without touching the keyboard, something is wrong. I never had this problem in the previous 500+ hours I have been playing. Only since the Brigitte patch has this started.

People make mistakes. The internet can be harsh. Please just acknowledge us who are trying to tell you that something is wrong and you are working on it. I really don’t want to quit playing, but on a long enough timeline of this horsesh!!t, I will have to stop playing Overwatch.

I’ve deleted PTR for now, #RIP.

With this update my game was slow, and especially in Brazil where the internet is one of the worst in the world, you take the ping

Its funny as after the patch I was in quick play and I was wondering why my character was running into the wall, I thought my keyboard D key was stuck. I even mentioned it in chat, but no one else was experiencing the issue. This along with this latency that has made this game unplayable.

Remember guys, Blizzard never reverts changes.

Before I had 29-35 ping. After the patch my latency is in the 40-44 range.

Literally unplayable /s

If it’s for the sake of security I’d rather get a 10ms penalty than have information leaked. Thank you, Philip.

Continued to observe the same problems:

  1. Full network info latency and the ‘LATENCY’ upper corner tag show different values.
  2. Overall connection is still about a third slower; other games, network speed test, etc, are not showing any change; this is only in Overwatch.
  3. ‘LATENCY’ is still more disruptive than ‘PNG’, obviously.
  4. full circle latency, again, is nowhere near as useful and as important as single direction ping.

So, I reiterate once again: this is functionally worse in multiple ways; it’s functionally inconsistent; just let us choose what kind of reading we want.

I don’t really have any qualms about the replacing of ping and rtt with latency, although it’d be nice if the latency was shown outside of games, even if it’s not “up to date” when i’m sitting in the menus. Being helpful or just being consistent, it was nice that ping and rtt was like that too in menus.

On another note, hahahah. Jokes on all of you, I’ve been getting 300-700MS rather than my usual 30-40MS before this change. And I’m certain nothing has changed with my ISP, nor has my family been downloading or using the internet much. great.

Last patch made my usual 50ms of latency go up to borderline unplayable levels
