A few months ago I got a new computer and now I can barely go 20 minutes of playing without getting the “Rendering Device Lost” crash. I have tried literally all of the advice I have seen: reset graphics settings, updated drivers, made sure correct GPU is being used, lowered graphics settings to the lowest possible, uninstalled and reinstalled, checked for corrupt files, changing performance mode on computer, and made sure my GPU isn’t overclocked. None of this has worked or helped at all and the game is completely unplayable.
Having the same issue as described here.
I have dowgraded the nvidia driver, but the only thing that changed was the time it takes to crash the first time:
Driver 551.52 (latest): 5 minutes
Driver 551.23: 15 minutes
Driver 546.65: 3 hours
After the game crashes the first time, it start to crash after like 1 minute running.
Nothing is overclocked.
I have reviewed the background apps to make sure that only Steam/OW was running. (For the 3 hours sessions, Discord was open as well).
I can play other games for longer periods without any issue.
Yep I have the same thing too. The amount of time it takes to crash the first time varies from like 20mins-1hr but after that it happens every like 5 mins. Hoping that we can get this resolved because I have found literally no solutions and the game is unplayable.
Just really hoping that it isn’t a GPU issue…
I have reset all the graphics and control configuration (because the new crosshair types).
Installed the latest nvidia drivers again (551.52).
Restarted the PC.
Opened the game, after 5 minutes, it crashed.
I have uploaded a msinfo32 output but can´t link it here for some reason.
What GPU and OS are you running? Maybe it is a problem with either Overwatch interacting with the GPU, the GPU with the OS, or Overwatch with the OS. I am running an NVIDIA 4070 Laptop GPU on Windows 11.
Are either of you running Windows Insider builds? I noticed some players having issues with that since experimental Windows builds aren’t supported by Blizzard games.
Hi,
Below are the information about my windows:
| Edition | Windows 11 Home Single Language |
|---|---|
| Version | 23H2 |
| Installed in | 05/09/2023 |
| OS Build | 22631.3155 |
| Experience | Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22684.1000.0 |
My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti (Notebook).
The “fun fact” here is that this error only happens with Overwatch AND only after the S9 update. I played S8 season with the same notebook without issues.
I can play PUBG without any issues with the same setup.
This is a Windows Insider build. Overwatch 2, and all other Blizzard games, do not officially support Windows Insider. Many features are experiments/temporary and may work with one patch, but not another. This is normal because you’re essentially running a beta Windows version, but you’ll want to exit the Insider program to avoid interference with the Overwatch client.
For real ?
This does not make sense. I did a fresh install and finished it right now, and in a fresh install, without being asked to be part of any beta program, this “thing” is installed automatically.
I went to the Windows Insider program page and have confirmed that I’m not part of it.
I will create a new post in the answers microsoft com forum to figure out what is going on and how to uninstall this package.
Here is my windows information:
| Edition | Windows 11 Home |
|---|---|
| Version | 22H2 |
| Installed on | 11/29/2023 |
| OS build | 22621.3155 |
| Serial number | PF4BF8H2 |
| Experience | Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22684.1000.0 |
It should be a setting on the local machine, not their website. I don’t use Windows 11, so not sure if it’s in the same spot it used to be on Windows 10.
I have reviewed both the page that says if you are part of the Microsoft Insider program AND the Windows configuration as you pointed out.
Both places shows that I’m no participating in the Windows Insider program.
Also, i have asked in the Microsoft forums and they confirmed that:
Build 22631.3155 is latest public build, not insider preview and Windows Feature Experience Pack is part of Windows.
So, that’s not the issue.
P.S: I would love to link the thread in the Microsoft forums, but I’m not allowed to send links.
Okay, I discovered that even if you’re not an insider, you can receive experimental updates with the Windows Feature Experience Pack.
So perhaps something in that pack was updated and causing problems with the game. That was the case for WoW players.
As far as I understood, the Windows Feature Experience Pack was introduced in Windows 10 to allow to deploy new features and small components faster. At the time you were allowed to opt in/out of it and was indeed part of the insider program.
For Windows 11, this package is part of windows and you can’t get it out of your installation.
The blog post you linked confirm that there is a stable version of the Windows Feature Experience Pack as they say that the mentioned version is released to the Beta Channel.
The package version that is automatically installed for me is different (this is a fresh install that was completed yesterday):
| Edition | Windows 11 Home Single Language |
|---|---|
| Version | 23H2 |
| Installed on | 20/02/2024 |
| OS build | 22631.3155 |
| Experience | Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22684.1000.0 |
It should be the stable one and not something experimental.
Sorry to quote this from my post in Microsoft forums:
If you issue is caused by Windows version 23H2 or Windows Feature Experience Pack then game manufacturer must update their software.
Anyway, I will do some tests with my GPU.
This might be a little early to call it for sure, but I think I may have fixed it. I just turned off NVIDIA Reflex in video settings and I have played for longer now than I have in months at just around an hour. This may be worth a shot.
EDIT: THIS DOES NOT WORK IT WAS A FLUKE
What I have noticed in my tests is:
The driver 546.65 is more stable
The game crash when the GPU load hit 100%. This spike happens like, the game is idle in the main screen sometimes or your just running around in the practice range. The load is at 70-80% and it jumps to 100% and crashes.
GPU and CPU temperature are ok. GPU is always at or under 80 degrees (C).
I have played around with TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) but the results are negligible.
Blizzard make a functioning game challenge (impossible)
I also checked and I am also not a part of the insider program so whatever this tech support person was saying is completely wrong.
I just wanna play overwatch man :")))
