Ever so often when i get into a game i get this error and my game crashes. I’ve tried everything to fix this and i still get it. and cuz i dont know what causes this i’m too scared to even touch comp. Almost makes the game unplayable because I keep getting this error
Howdy!
I wanted to provide more context. A rendering device lost error is a TDR error. A Timeout detection and recovery (TDR) occurs when the GPU does not respond to Windows on time or reports back an error has been reported by the GPU. The goal of this process is to ensure the PC doesn’t crash so the program is crashed instead.
As for sources of this error, it will require some troubleshooting; the 5 primary sources are:
- Driver issue
- third-party software conflict(Think overlays, overclocking software, streaming software or any directx software in general.)
- Overheating GPU gets to a point it starts to bit-flip data becomes incorrect.
- Unstable Power Delivery from either the power supply or motherboard.
- Faulty hardware of the GPU itself.
We cover some of these steps on our Rendering Device Lost article linked by Unknown. Additional steps: Check for Overheating hardware article Here,
- Right click on the Desktop → Select: NVIDIA Control Panel → Help (Top right) → Check: DEBUG. This will ensure the GPU is running at default speed and power usage. (If you don’t have an NVIDIA GPU the goal of this step is to disable any overclocking via third-party software.)
We are not equipped to fully troubleshoot all sources of TDR errors that requires either the GPU manufacturer or a local PC repair shop if issues continue.
Thank you.
This happens to me about 10-20% of the time. OW2 crashes with a rendering device lost error - ONLY occurs on the map loading screen. Doesn’t matter if the game is fullscreen maximized or tabbed out and hidden.
Not sure if it’s a bug introduced in a recent Overwatch patch or the latest AMD Radeon driver (v23.7.1). The game was rock-solid stable on my system as of a couple of weeks or so ago.
Latest 23.7.2 driver is even worse … frame drops and stutter all around getting 20-144 fps back and forth when i can do 300 lol
Had to go again to 23.5.2 driver (I did so when 23.7.1 came out too)
It’s probably rebuilding the shader cache after the driver update. Need to give it a few minutes in the training range, then the framerate should go back to normal.
