Rendering device lost

I just built a brand new computer (except for GPU which is 1080ti FTW 3)

Everything runs fine all other games run fine, however overwatch constantly crashes rendering device lost on hero select screen.

It only ever happens inbetween round on the hero select screen and its reproducible (it happens every time).

I have tried to play with the settings but I don’t believe that the issue is on my end. If I let the game run in practice range, it will not crash.

It is not my hardware or driver issue, this is blizzard code issue. Any thoughts?

I can assure you it’s not
(awaiting the “Blizz Shill” remarks)

I had that exact issue in OW1 on a RX 5700 XT video card
Eventually it got fixed in a driver update

could also be your video card, why did you build a new computer using a GPU from 2016? can you say BOTTLENECKED?

Are you sure this isn’t the case? You just built a new computer, which I presume also has a new install of Windows and different drivers from what you had before. Have you tried different drivers?

Well it could be a code issue.

But usually that error is related to the GPU getting too much heat.

Granted the game can be coded in a way where it generates too much heat.

I know DarkTide is really pushing this 3080 GeForce laptop I got. Literally have to have a cooling pad and have the laptop open for proper cooling.

…. Given GPU prices and availability why wouldn’t you. I did the same with a 1070ti, still running most games near max at 1440p

Anyway Op, can you go over your process for trouble shooting drivers? Did you use ddu for a full clean?

More so, I imagine you tried repairing/verifying OW’s files/ reinstalled

Check your nvidia control settings too. My whole panel was gone at one point and doing a third River reinstall fixed it

That sounds like some sort of loading problem.

You can get a 30-series card now under their original MSRP.
The 40-series is overpriced and not worth splurging for, but you can definitely find last generation cards at “reasonable” prices.

I’d love to know where. All I’ve found for 3000 series (3080) are still over $1200 cad more in the $1300 - $1500 range. Even if that’s below in usd (I don’t recall) it’s still a lot and availability here is scarce

With that being said 1070ti/1080 are still quite sufficient… not that I don’t want an upgrade

does your motherboard have a built in graphics card, cause if it does, i would manually disable it in the bios

Maybe see if this helps

Yeah I just took a look and the prices seem to have went back up again
I got a 3070 like a month ago for just over $700 CAD at a local shop but that might have been a “Black Friday month” sale or some such thing

The 1080Ti OP has should in theory be plenty for OW2 but given the age of the card there is a good chance it might be on its last legs. I believe it still has driver support so they could always run Display Driver Uninstaller and install the newest available driver fresh

but from what I recall of that error - it was at least two years ago now - there was nothing I could do to resolve it until one day after a driver update it no longer happened.

are you overclocking the video card? Overwatch is the absolute best at finding when the video card has unstable clock speeds.

Ya I don’t doubt the card might be nearing end of life. I feel like he’s be running into more issues though. Hard to say.

For myself I just got over a two week series of random, mostly memory related blue screens and tried nearly everything. Sfc, chkdsk, dism, ddu reinstalls, various drivers, roll backs, resets, memtest, memory scan, creating values in regedit, cleared cmos, reseated and cleaned everything, drive health checks, it was wild.

A final driver reinstall and a windows firmware update fixed it… then control panel was missing and another driver reinstall fixed that.

Anyway, with OP it could be as simple as a missing or corrupt file. Sometimes reinstalling the game and doing another driver reinstall is all you need

There must be an error dump somewhere for him to find… I don’t think whocrashed would cover this but maybe? I forget if it’s just an OS related software

But for the most part this sounds like a driver issue… maybe even just reseating the thing.

Edit: google says more often than not reinstalling the game works

Pretty sure this is a driver issue. I had this same issue years ago and it eventually stopped after a driver update. Using DDU and installing the latest driver again is probably the best thing OP could do. Other than that I never found a way to make it stop short of swapping the gpu.

Quite honestly another clean driver reinstall and game reinstall should do it

Yeah. As far as I’m aware there really is nothing else to do.

Hmm, not sure what it could be – I am using my gtx 1050 Ti which I think is weaker than yours? Just upgraded my processor to 12600k but still couldn’t find the resources for a new gpu yet.

Still, the game runs fine at the moment. More than other games, OW sometimes bugs out - clicking outside the screen, connection drops, super stingy with lag if I am running my resource hogging Firefox (compared to Destiny 2 which I can literally watch netflix or photoshop with) – so I can believe that OW is the one game acting up for you.

Still, I think like others mentioned, you should look over your drivers again and check some other settings. I think for OW during the buggy betas, I found a windows setting for how much resources to give when rendering 3d and increasing that fixed some problems.

Beyond that, google says it relates to you having too many programs open so I’d double check your RAM quality, running processes, harddrive space and if (like me) you have something like Photoshop bugging out and caching gigs of data somewhere
