They won’t change it, it’s for lore purposes.

Nobody knows him as Hammond the Hamster, only as his Scrapyard name: Wrecking Ball. :thinking:

If you’re going to call him Hammond anyway, you obviously don’t care about the official name in game so why change it? Just ignore it and move on.

The 100+ people asking this same question clearly haven’t paid too much attention to the lore behind the name.

His alias is Wrecking Ball. No one knows he is Hammond. It’s the same thing with Soldier, Reaper, Sombra and Doomfist.

Except the characters can clearly see in-game that a hamster is piloting the mech? Lore doesn’t always = In game… and I can’t see his name without having Miley Cyrus flash across my mind.

Oh, I actually meant that their real names aren’t used. It’s not any different with Hammond. No one even uses their proper in-game names either. I mentioned this earlier in another thread; we don’t call out “Jack Morrison behind!” or “Amélie Lacroix is sniping from the back!”.

We’re just going to call Hammond either rat, Hamtaro, ball, rodent, hamster etc etc.

You can call him whatever you want. I don’t see why the text on-screen has to change if you’re going to disregard it anyway.

And how about Ana?
From the lore,“Shrike” is her alias and nobody knows about the Shrike’s real identity(except Soldier76 and Reaper).
If we have to call Hammond as Wrecking ball,why we have to call Ana as Ana but not Shrike?

Because no one knew Hammond even existed per-se except those on Horizon. He was a test subject. So, no one knows what his name is, and he probably never wanted to reveal it either.

Because there’s no consistency. People bring up aliases because the Hammond / Wrecking Ball dichotomy keeps being presented as a false dilemma. Some characters like Mei, Brigitte, Reinhardt and Torbjorn are called by their names, some characters like Soldier 76, D.Va, Widowmaker and doomfist are called by their aliases. There are no hard-and-fast rules as to who gets to be called what beyond what Blizzard decide, and they chose Wrecking Ball this time.

The “alias argument” is made to point out that SOME characters are referred to by their aliases, not that ALL characters have to be. Wrecking Ball is part of “some characters” in this case.

I have to agree with the OP, his handle may be Wrecking Ball, much like Reaper / DoomFist / Widowmaker etc, using their handles that work but… Hammond is just easier to say.

Sure. While we’re at it, let’s change the following as well since it’s what we’re all saying anyway:

Winston = Monkey
Hanzo = Handsoap
Brigitte = Bridget
Roadhog = Hog
Junkrat = Junk
Soldier:76 = Soldier
Widow = Baguette
Mei = Satan
etc.
