It seems clear there’s a silence duration threshold beyond which Sombra is busted, and at or beneath which she’s unplayable. Silence doesn’t work in Overwatch (hardly a hot take). 6 years of forcing it despite continuous failure is more than enough I think. Can we move on now?
Silence is not iconic. It is not a part of Sombra’s identity. It has nothing to do with her personality. Hack is iconic, and silence is just one of many potential effects that mechanic could produce. Here’s another possibility:
Hack inflicts a D.O.T. (think of it as data corruption) that deals X% of the enemy’s max HP per second for Ys. Her damage buff is removed since the D.O.T. supplements her base damage, and maybe there’s opportunity for her primary to be restored to 8. This debuff would be much easier for teammates to capitalize on while also feeling less oppressive to enemies, since nothing in gaming feels as horrible as silence.
Again, that’s just one possibility. There are tons more. Maybe someone out there has a brilliant one. Would like to see some other ideas.
Honestly instead of removing it they could just make it 0.1 seconds or something so it just simply disrupts channeled attacks rather than being an actual silence.
I really like your idea of her hack inflicting a DOT. I’m imagining how fun and satisfying a 5 man EMP would be… like a mega Ashe dynamite. It could be epic!!
I feel Sombra has lost her shine in this game and like Mei, she needs to be looked at through a new lens by the devs.
As long as she has the best escape/survival ability in the game, which doubles as a self-heal, triples as a teleport, perma-stealth which doubles as a movement buff, and as long as her hack mechanic is just, ‘hold right click in the enemies direction to de-buff while invisible,’ and her gun mechanic is, ‘hold left click in the enemies direction to damage,’ Sombra is going to be in roughly the same place as Mei. Too mechanically forgiving and too much utility to be allowed to pose a serious threat.
i was thinking about a DOT rework too after they announced they are gonna change her or rework an abilit??
still i did like 5 second silence sombra in overwatch 1. even tho you couldnt hack in stealth it was powerfull against certain heroes especially doom, hammond and sigma. also messed with other tanks royally like rein and hog.
with this new rule that only tanks have CC she is pretty much phased out like some other heroes and they have to rework her to be different… sucks. it is funny tho how she had chain hack in season 1 till they nerfed it. i was wondering too why they would buff her that way and i was just chain hacking tanks in stealth… bet they were pissed
still i just hope they dont touch invisibility or it will be harder to do this… my last game as sombra - early this morning
Sombra is fine atm, I would even argue she’s a bit weak too. And that’s coming from a Genji main. 1.25 second silence is nothing and easily played around. I feel Sombra is a throw pick nowadays, even with doomfist meta nobody picks her.
I’m a Ball main…kinda, and I miss Overwatch 1 because of how badly designed Sombra is.
5 second hack? Ok, I can see her, I can plan my attack, that’s cool, it adds challenge to the game that I can work around. To me that’s what made Overwatch so much fun, every game was different you knew what you were against and had to work around it. Unless I literally hack the game so I can see her in invis, I can’t do that xD
Personally I think the HoT could be good if this was OW1 Sombra as you could work around it, having a Hero who’s invisible attack you and you can’t do anything about it would just be frustrating. Even if the damage was bad, it’s just not fun to fight something you can’t see.
Look at games like TF2 with Spy. He can one shot you but has to get really really close to do it and the Hero he does counter hard (heavy) can shut him down hard with his Minigun because he can spray and pray, same goes for the other Hero Pyro that has a flamethrower that applies a DoT.
Maybe that’s what Sombra needs, she needs a Hero that can apply a DoT to her that gets her out of stealth and can kill her if she’s too reckless.
Beg to differ, dynamite, magnetic grenade, hook, sojourn, doomfist and ball in their entirety, immortalities, deflect are all unfun to play against.
Idk maybe because I have so many hours on sombra so I know how to deal with it when I play other heroes. 9/10 times I’ll kill or force her out.
DOT is just a boring mechanic, any damage mechanic is just boring, not to mention kiriko just nullifies everything. If I wanted to go play cod, I would.
Please stay away from damage buffs and damage as form of abilities, might as well give everyone a sticky and call it a day. It’s boring.
Like? All you could come up with was damage, I have my primary for that.
I want hack to be meaningful as well, but trust me whatever it is, you’ll still complain.
Conditional damage buffs are why Sombra keeps bouncing between god and garbo. “But she can deal +25% damage if she hacks you, she can’t have a strong SMG!”
Great, except hack has no lasting value besides the damage buff now, since it doesn’t last long enough to stop anyone from memeing on her with their abilities and the damage increase no longer offsets anyone peeling for her target. She does slightly more DPS to hacked targets than OW1, less damage than OW1 otherwise, and hack doesn’t prevent Lucio or Mercy from running away from her.
Get rid of the conditional damage buff on hack, add a backfire debuff to hack (like Sombra’s own backfire when hack is interrupted), revert the SMG damage, and then adjust the hack duration/cooldown based on how effective the new debuff is.
Actually due to hack cast time, a lot of the times it’s counter productive to hack squishies. If you count hack cast time into ttk, her ttk is longer for anything bellow 250hp with hack than without it.
Cool, so it’s even worse than OW1 since you have a nerfed SMG that’s still a better option than the weird conditional damage buff combo. Cool, cool, cool.
Well her damage is slightly better than ow1 due to reduced spread, but it’s still pathetic in comparison to majority of dps roster.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. They made it so you’re conditioned to hack for damage as well as it being spammable. Who would have figured it’s going to be annoying to play against. Not to mention I was annoyed for having extra steps before doing dps. Lose-lose.
I actually think if they left ow1 sombra as is, but made tank passive encompass hack as well (1s silence for tanks and 6s for everyone else) that less people would complain because hack would have been used a lot less. Also hack would be a lot easier to interrupt since she had to come out of invis first.
I wouldn’t be too fussed at all if they just reverted her changes back to OW1 Sombra. The change in hack clearly isn’t working out in OW2 for her. I hate how OW2 is about making characters less unique. Sombra has a unique ability but they traded that for essentially a worse discord orb.
