I know the Devs have debated about this and wish we would forget about it and frankly I agree. The golden weapons show that you’ve played a lot of competitive, and that’s it. It has no use and it’s a false sense of mastery.
Although I want it remove personally, I never want a idea gone without adding something constructive.
We should however have something for mastery other than the rank you get for playing competitive. Each one of us has one or more characters we play to get good at. Hours show the amount we play but not when we played it last expect for competitive.
For example, I have roughly 50+ hours on Widowmaker. From an outside perspective, if I saw that I would say to myself that individual has an understanding of said character but I don’t know how good he/she really is. Sad truth of my career profile is that I played Widow as my main for season 1-3 in only quick play because I was nervous that I couldn’t perform in competitive.
Haven’t played since.
However, even though I didn’t play competitive I have no real way of showing that I am absolute garbage at that character now. I am a support player with decent stats on Ana, Zenyatta, and Lúcio. If there was a time or stat based reward system to show that I am a fairly decent player with those characters, then they should be shown and same with everyone else’s character choice. If someone stops playing a character, it should also show when they stopped for more accurate information and overall I think it would raise moral.
Theres nothing wrong with weapon skins - and tbh I want more. All kinds of different shiny colors, camo, you name it. What I don’t want is the requirement for purchasing them to be comp points.
I never get the impression that a golden weapon == mastery. All it says to me is that the person likes that hero or plays them a lot.
Do you have any ideas for what to do with people who already have golden guns if they get removed? For example xqc has all 27 of them, would he just lose all of that farming time and his 81,000 competitive points?
Perhaps they can institute a certain hero skill ranking system so you have to achieve a certain levels of hero mastery with each hero before you can equip that hero’s golden weapon. Heck maybe even implement bronze and silver weapons as milestones on the way of mastery to the golden ones (just brainstorming here). As it is right now you can save up your comp points and purchase any hero’s golden weapon regardless of your mastery with it, if you had to earn them via mastery it’d be more of an achievement in my opinion.
If you’ve played Battlefield 1 if you play medic class you can rank it up from level 0 to level 50 unlocking the ability to purchase certain weapons for use with that class at predetermined levels. A similar system would work well in Overwatch for weapon skins in my opinion. Playing one class and mastering it also has no effect on ranking up the other classes so in Overwatch I may master Mercy but I’m still at level 0 with Moira until I play her a lot.
Well with what Luka said, maybe instead of removing them all together, obtain them a different way. This is an idea I’m just thinking of now but how about a temporary mastery for the golden weapons?
Like let’s say you play a lot of Brigitte this month because she’s new and a powerful pick for the current meta. You play up to 20+ hours this month and have above average stats with her and so you’re rewarded with her golden weapon. You continue to play her and at a certain point you just drop her as a character. Now you no longer want to play Brigitte and instead you want to play Genji. After a while, without playing her you lose the weapon and instead you have Genji’s golden weapon. You will obviously be able to play different characters and be able to obtain more than one golden weapon at a time in the time frame but it shows people what you are currently playing.
To show that you have a golden weapon before you’re even in game there could be added a golden boarder around character next to your username in the Career Profile. Then there’s an ease of access to know who and what you’re playing with before you even start playing a game.
So yes it would take away permanent golden weapons but now you give the golden weapons a purpose other than showing you play competitive.
I dont wanna lose my golden weapon though, I love it and find it very shiny. I dont think rewarding them for playing a certain character only for them to play someone else just to then lose it would be a smart decision.
Or daily tasks… Like
Kill 50 people as a support hero or whatever, u know what i mean
I usually caution against advising things like this, as these types of daily quests encourage people to go against the grain of the game in pursuit of accomplishing that goal. For example “Heal x amount in one game/day” might just encourage someone to duo queue with roadhog who just keep jumping into the enemy to soak up damage and not do anything. You’ve basically introduced two griefers onto a team so they can obtain their free 100 coins/XP/lootbox bonus for the day.
It’s a compelling system but requires a lot of really careful planning around how it’s done.
So let’s just remove the ONLY incentive to play ranked then, according to you. No, just stop. No. Please go and actually complain about something worthwhile like Brigette, not COSMETICS THAT NO NO WAY AFFECT YOU. THIS IS THE MOST PETTY THING I’VE SEEN ALL WEEK.
It’s just an alternate color of a weapon that makes people feel good about themselves, it isn’t hurting anyone. Grow up please…
I actually enjoy the Hero Mastery system in Paladins. The more you play a hero, you get hero exp and regular exp, and at certain hero levels you can earn items specific to that hero.
Not agreeing they should remove gold weapons, but this is just a possible alternative to obtaining it aside from comp.
