The team with higher average rank of players is expected to win over the other team by higher probability, and so they will be rewarded less. It’s pretty straightforward and completely normal that they do it.

The system predicts the outcome of who they think has a higher chance of winning. If it’s too far apart, say a 60/40 split, then winning while having a much higher chance to win, results in getting less rank. As you were favoured. It could be that your team had the overall higher mmr players. If the expected chance is like 51/49, then there would be no expected modifier. The game isn’t always going to be able to find teams that have nearly the same chance of winning depending on time, region, etc. And they don’t want you sitting in queue forever waiting for it.

It has always worked like this, just before it was hidden and didn’t tell you why you gained less for that match.

Ah but would it really make a difference that bad if they got rid of it ?

It would affect people’s rank. As right now being the team favoured to lose, they lose less rank in those games. And teams favoured to win gain less. Evening it out more. Being the team expected to lose would be even worse than it is now.

Why should they? it makes complete sense to have it in place.

Even chess works in the same logic - a higher elo player beating a lower elo player gains less ratings and visa versa.

Oh okay I guess it works out

Expected means that you had over a 52% chance to win. Per Blizzard 98% of all matches fall between 45-55% and the system won’t match something over 60/under 40.

Meanwhile the system only has about a 50-50 chance of predicting winner. This means the matches are close enough that the 10-20 team SR difference isn’t really impacting the result.
