I know there’s probably threads back when they removed assault maps from comp stating they were removing them. What I’m asking is whether they gave a reason for the decision. I really miss being able to assault/hold a map and have the team that wins be the one that holds best, not an arcade match where it’s all or nothing and only playing one side of it. If anyone knows where to find this info it would be greatly appreciated.
IIRC closest thing to a reason was them saying something along the lines of ‘Maybe 2CP doesn’t fit in OW2,’ during a livestream.
In reality it’s likely because a majority of people hated the mode and Blizzard knew.

After examining all our maps and game modes, we noted that the Assault game mode has always been a source of discontent for many members of our community. We believe many of the issues for the Assault maps could only be solved by making major changes to the game mode and major reworks to the maps, resulting in complete level rebuilds. We’ve shifted our focus to create maps in exciting new locations across the world such as Toronto and Rome
While I’ll agree they can be frustrating at times, I’d take an assault map over pushing a stupid robot around any day.
An obvious answer from my point of view is that those maps were so deeply unpopular that on several of them you’d typically cycle through multiple team’s worth of players in back queue leavers before ever getting an actual steady team, if indeed you ever did.
It essentially broke OW1’s queueing system because it disproportionately created high opportunities for backfilling despite only representing a small fraction of total games, so people who weren’t willing to quit their games ended up playing on worse maps more often.
And if it wasn’t suitable for quickplay, it certainly wasn’t suitable for competitive.
Assault would probably work fine if they removed snipers and anything like snipers.
I.e. Widow, Hanzo, Ashe, Sojourn
Yeah, but I don’t play quickplay. It’s pretty much arcade or comp for me. I’m not a fan of a map where one team defends while the other attacks… and that’s it. No chance for the attacking team to show how well (or how badly) they can defend compared to the other team. That’s why I love it when I actually get maps like Kings Row or Rialto and roll my eyes when I get brainless robot maps.
basically like 5 guys with twitch channels had a baby tantrum about 2cp so they stole the maps away from the millions of players who loved them
On god, I freaking miss them. I honestly didn’t mind snipers in those maps, just need to work with your team tbh
i wish assault and 2 cp maps could replace the push maps completely
