Remember that Overwatch won game of the year?

Brigitte was introduced, which brought goats, which killed OWL viewership and player base. Instead of removing Brigitte until a solution was found, Blizzard continued to put band-aids over their mistake. After switching OWL to Youtube to stay in profit, teams now had to rely on winning matches to make money rather than having likable personalities on their teams. The league was now filled with Adderall abusers with little to no fanbases which made switching to Youtube pointless because viewership was down again. Then role queue was introduced to stop goats. Epic fail. RIP queue times, RIP team comp flexibility. Without a flexible team comp, it was so much easier to put two shields in front of a bastion and win the game. So Blizzard put open-queue back in the game for those who wanted it back- effectively cutting even MORE of the player base.

With all of these problems, you would think Blizzard would take a step back and see why people liked Overwatch in the first place. It was a 6v6 strategy based FPS with objectives and team coordination at it’s core. Great, so what does Blizzard do?

  1. They ruin original Fan-favorite maps. With a simple google search you can tell the most popular map in the game was Kings Row, and now it’s vibe is entirely ruined by making it a boring 6 AM sky. Similar issues with other OG maps, the new skyboxes are absolutely ruining the look of the game.

  2. They remove a tank role to make queue times smaller? COMICAL. Tanks are horribly over-tuned. Now you have a buffed Doomfist running around the map with double the health as everyone else, lack of Support stuns and abilities to stay alive, lack of DPS stuns to stop him, with the only potential threat being an enemy over-tuned tank. Same goes with Roadhog who STILL has a one shot hook ability (with no barriers now to hide behind for Supports, and no stuns to deny the hook!)

  3. Team strategy and composition in an FPS was one of the most unique things about Overwatch. So Blizzard goes and makes supports borderline defenseless and useless out on the battlefield? Why? Yes, you can still heal people occasionally, but the truth is, with lack of proper tanks to coordinate with, a DPS is left to die to a million things quicker than any support can dream of healing them. A sniper one shot, a hook and kill, a Soujourn one tap, a proper burst from another DPS, even Ana with a discord orb two shots.

Did Blizzard forget that Overwatch was once game of the year? You guys didn’t fail at making the game. It was GOOD! It was the most popular FPS for a time. Stop running away from what Overwatch was and bring us back. It’s not a 5v5 shootfest. There are meant to be barriers, and team compositions, and coordination, and roles to fill. When you make a mistake, stop putting band-aids on bringing us further and further away from game of the year
all you had to do was remove Brigitte and listen to the community to fix her

I am surprised Blizzard didn’t learn how easy it was to fix problems when they removed Paris from competitive map lineup. They made a bad map, the players didn’t like it, so they removed it and made a different one.

If they made Paris now, they’d make it the only map in rotation until players got use to it lmao

Idk, I like them. Plus, the time of day will be randomized when OW2 releases. Og skybox isn’t going anywhere :sunglasses:

The game has reached the end of its useful earning potential. Whatever revenue is earned is just extra fabric in Bobby’s golden parachute. The playerbase needs to move on to the next shiny attraction, and it ain’t OW2.

Glad to hear the aesthetic problem isn’t as big of a deal. I guess I’ll just cry about the rest of the stuff instead lol

Brig in OW rn is actually good in my opinion. By remove I meant put an X on her character select until they could find a fitting nerf.

Overwatch was falling long before Brig, it’s rewriting history to blame the game’s collapse entirely on her, she was just one nail of many in the coffin. If anything, the Mercy’s rework was what really started the game’s downhill trod, but even that wasn’t the sole cause, just the first really big trigger.

And honestly, fixing balance is hardly as easy as you make it sound. The game has had major design issues from day 1, it just wasn’t as noticeable when everything was still shiney and new and people hadn’t yet learned how to exploit synergies. The choices they’re making now is what pulling the band-aids off looks like.

Either way, it doesn’t look like better balancing decisions would have done much good in the long run anyway as lack of content would have killed the game regardless. From the start, the team under Jeff was living in the past. They never intended to maintain content flow or treat the game as a proper live service product.

the real question is, was there ever a time where game of the year was actually worth paying attention to? its been nothing but mediocre triple A games as long as i can remember.

The blame isn’t on Brigitte, putting a bad hero in the game is hardly enough to kill it that’s for sure. It’s more so the changes Blizzard kept making to try to make it work. They keep on finding issues and introducing a solution that creates two more issues instead of just reverting back and trying things until it worked.

Y’know, I’d love to disagree for the sake of the “Delete Brig” premise, but you’re not wholly wrong. Even she was a Bandaid to the comp issues they were having because they didn’t want to address a stale Dive meta. Will say that without Bash, she’s kinda junk now, and definitely needs a new Ult (Way overdue tbh).

It was not exactly “brigitte” the problem, but having deliberately ignored the mistake of not really calibrating it to only one role (support). They preferred to “cheat” in not tirdorurre “a support and” a tank “by making a hybrid. And for those who idolize Jeff Kaplan so much, do you know what he said about her after so many nerfs?” We did it that way because the community wanted it. this teaches us that you don’t always know what you want "(sure Jeff, we just wanted more heroes, not more hybrids). and then today you can see in the Overwatch 2 beta a baptiste who gives immediate healing to his teammates
exactly as the armor pack of brigitte did individually. this makes one seriously doubt how much “utility” they really want to give to heroes support (eham, recently Moira) without considering the favoritism one has on the various heroes. or the joke that now the cc of brigitte was clearly less infallible than a flashbang of Cassidy for how she was nerfed
Oh, but I recommend, to Ana the utility of having an OP grenade and a CC must remain, huh!

this is half the truth. the failure of the 2-2-2 was mainly the failure to consider the difficult coexistence between main and off roles. Orisa was not in the least Meta before the Goats, she became one only with the obligation and the intervention of heroes like Sigma with the shield that can be replaced in a short time. But I certainly agree that this method has stressed the community simply because
there has been no consideration of entertainment for everyone. all because of the stupid “ice cream theory” (I have a taste of it just now what’s going on with the queues here). the truth is that with the defenses canceled, people had too many dps to try and all tanks and supports ready to be the target of a nerf “for the sake of the meta”.

what certainly killed the trust was the non-solution to the queues: free lootboxes? random hero pool? new heroes to be reintegrated immediately in the poor variety of support and tanks no, right?

it doesn’t seem like the worst of evils, actually.

this was due to how much they are ignoring the supports in their extreme immediate need for variety (gosh, again the same problem not addressed in the period of 2-2-2, not giving enough variety to play), not by how much they are making valid the tanks. if you only need a tank player and 2 support players to start a match
does it seem like a correct variety 10 tanks and only 7 support to choose?

because OW was initially cataloged MOBA hybrid FPS. a reason why Symmetra was a really intended support in the classic role of supports and not healers. one of the reasons why there were defensors and above all the free pick. the rules changed very quickly, by now we know how things went. but I invite you to this reflection: the problem of Overwatch is its huge conversion
or too much priority in pvp without yet proving anything useful to the community in its home entertainment?

I would say the second: the current beta is not solving one of the biggest problems of OW1: “it’s only qp” vs “I train with this account in the competition”. when they said they would put a competitive mode in the beta, we certainly did not expect them to only put the rules, but at least a testing on how they would manage a coexistence between a mode that should serve to train and one where to work to advance competitively. There wasn’t even the scruple of testing this coexistence mode thing by starting a mundane arcade mode. no, because this will be the preview of OWL 2022 in August / September with junkerqueen. It doesn’t matter if he’s OP and isn’t getting any major fixes on the knife, the important thing is that it is shown as much as possible in the tournament without considering the annoying feedback from the community criticizing its being OP.

and who always has to wait for OW2 to be designed to be a fun product to play at home? the community. we have to wait to see a competitive system working and active, we have to wait to see how the battle pass is managed, we have to wait for the aesthetic contents, we have to wait for the arcade mode calibration now that there is 5v5, we have to wait for the PVE on an unspecified date. oh, luckily we have the bare minimum to launch OWL 2022.

uff, please this is the only criticism that I find absurd and 100% immature : in a fps game a headshot from a sniper is permissible.

he might deserve it, but only if he started creating content exclusively dedicated to his gamer community, not his community of spectators watching an e-sports show. all this morbidity for 5v5 literally overshadowed that there was a PVE. as long as we won’t see any trace of it, OW2 desires to be a meme of himself: “OW1 fattened” (because the real OW1 is a loser sloth “skin” machine now)

Brigitte only had the sin of not having been checked. hating her indiscriminately does not solve the problem either before or now. She was actually a much-loved and long-awaited character prior to her OP release. she had to be fixed in her PTR period, not starting from her debut in comp (I still remember that her first nerf was after her day one in comp :man_facepalming: disaster).

don’t get me wrong I generally agree with all your hatred, but we need to focus on how much blizzar is ignoring the community for
an e-sport business. quite unfair, even considering that they could invest in better “shows” (animation, just to name one ). but today “making fiction that gamers would still be passionate about takes a back seat”.

i love these threads whenever they pop up

Yeah, some of my friends quit around season 4-5 already, some ow streamers I watched too. People were pretty much done with things like hack, orisa shields, doomfist already. Some were not into the hero limits. But also the repeat events and the constant change of the ranked system early on was annoying them or boring (they’re still gripeing about coin flips and scatter arrow to this day because they don’t know it changed). There were lots of reasons but I think it was just kind of a big hyped game that quickly lost traction because it was a big title from a popular company and maybe it’s not that great nor appeals to many in reality. Still, I enjoy it and stuck with it while my friends played other stuff and I play with them sometimes, no biggie.

The point of including Brig was because it was an easy fix that they drilled into the ground. I’m not blaming the hero for killing the game, I’m blaming the fact that Bliz never takes a step back and instead tries to fit the mistakes into the game.

I honestly don’t really care that much of the reason to introduce 2-2-2. I think a major reason was to prevent GOATS, you think otherwise. The main point is that it strayed further to what Overwatch was meant to be.

I agree it’s not the biggest of deals, but there is also an element of principal to it. We can’t ever have anything good, it’s all gotta be shiny.

I suppose I can’t expect you to read my mind- what I mean is that snipers have soo much more free reign and levels to the maps to stand on that majority of heroes can do nothing about. Lack of barriers and lack of off tank to jump them.

Again, I just meant as a moral of the story- reverting the game until they find a proper solution instead of forcing it down our throats is smarter.

Brigitte was a solution to Tracer, instead of removing Tracer until a solution was found, Blizzard continued to put band-aids over their mistake.

Tracer was the problem here Blizzard was putting band-aids over.

Like, you are not wrong in saying “they should have removed the issue and reworked it” which is true, but you are targeting the wrong hero here.

The issue with what you’re saying is that the people who claimed it dead at the beginning were never going to stick with Overwatch in the first place. I couldn’t care less if Bliz made the game bad to the people that claimed it dead a year after launch. It’s the fact that they made the game bad for the people who were loyal to it.

I’m not targeting a hero so much as targeting the fact that they change the game to fit a hero instead of changing a hero to fit THE GAME.
