Rejoin a match after you lost internet connection

During a comp match with my friends my internet gave out. At first I thought the enemy Winston lost connection as I saw him slide through the air and phase through the wall.

After roughly one to two minutes my internet was back and I could sign back in. I saw there was an option that said “REJOIN MATCH”. But when I clicked it, it went back to “PLAY”.

I couldn’t Rejoin the match we were playing and I had a suspension for about twelve minutes. Which would be more than the rest of the game would have lasted.

My internet isn’t bad but I’m just surprised that there isn’t an option to rejoin a competitive match in case your internet dies on you for one reason or another.

TL;DR:
Internet died during comp match and I couldn’t rejoin my friends due to the suspension.

Could anyone help me in telling why this is a feature so I could get some context?

You’re supposed to be able to rejoin but sometimes it just bugs. AAA company everyone

its possible the enemy pulled a DDOS attack on ya

This happened to me few days after OW2 launched. Except my connection was fine and Blizz servers sucked. I got “Lost connection to server”. I was unable to rejoin the game and was suspended for 14mins.
