I’m just gonna say it: Reinhardt is badly designed.
He’s from an era where the Devs designed so few tanks/supports that they didn’t expect them to have to compete with eachother.
Originally, Mercy was the only main healer but the Devs have since created Ana/Moira/Bapt who can easily fill her role as needed on pretty much every map.
Reinhardt on the other hand doesn’t really have an alternative and never has. There are some maps like Lijang and Kings Row where nothing can replace him ever. But most maps his “competition” is just suboptimal. Also, the only real counterplay to Reinhardt is mirroring or playing such a split up composition that there’s no way for Reinhardt to deal AOE damage or land shatters.

Fritz, please.
I want you to cast your mind back a year, to when Dive was your Lord and Master.
I want you to consider Rein at that time.
Now come back to this thread. Does it make sense?
This…matters.

I dont think hes bad design, unless you feel like their idea of creating maps to pretty much always be idea for him to be bad design. I do believe though that an ult like Earthshatter has no business being on him if hes going to be the only reliable counter to it 3 years forwards.
That lack of foresight youre talking about is also screwing up Tracer and McCree.
Rein is best tank in this game…Hands down the only real counter to a good rein is rein himself.
That the tragic truth of OW right now lol
Lijang and Kings Row still only had Reinhardt even at the height of Dive’s power.
That should say something. Even when Reinhardt’s at his weakest his niche can’t be filled by other heroes
Is this not ideal? Maps drive hero usage, all hero’s have a time and place, and not ANY hero is required on all Maps?

Because he’s the only ground main tank that can move with his team, which is why we need another soon.

a brig main calls reinhardt a bad hero design…
I think the problem they see with it though is that they generalized him so much, that how do you make another mobile shield tank without having another Ashe situation?
We need another shield tank absolutely but i havent seen any concepts that compete well with him without being too overbearing and vice versa.

Isn’t that good? Every hero has a place where it’s good? And honestly Lijang is 100% not a Rein map. If you watched OWL back then you could see that dive was mostly played there. Only Kings Row is a Rein map.
That’s a flat out lie and you know it. Half the Damage hero roster is outclassed everywhere and in all scenarios
Reinhardt is not badly designed
reinhardt has fair counters in main tank categories
winston dva can dominate zarya rein
orisa dva can dominate zarya rein
hammond can make rein hate his life
Reinhardt has others options for him but he is simply one of the most fun and basic hero to get used too.
plus you mentioned 2 of his best maps OF COURSE HE IS GONNA DOMINATE THERE LMAO.
its like saying junkrat is badly designed because he dominates hanumura
lmao
ilios in general sucks for rein, numbani first and second sucks for rein, paris sucks for rein, horizon defence sucks for rein, hanumura attack isnt the best for rein

I also want to point.
when dive was prominent before brig rein saw zero playtime. a good rein was miracle and everyone was begging for buffs. Now that he is meta because of heroes added and heroes buffed, everyone wants him nerfed if they saw a good player on rein lmao.
In an ideal world though, would you not want Maps to drive hero picks?
Junkertown Point A? Pirate Ship and Snipers.
Kings Row Streets? Rein + Hanzo
Illios? Orisa + Hog pit crew.
Numbani A? Dive or Bunker?
I mean yes, half the damage roster is outclassed but thats an issue of what happens at the top end of the game.
Is Ashe bad? Not really.
Is Ashe bad at the Top 500 Level (or OWL) in comparison to Widow? Yes.
If the community would look at hero’s as map applicable first, and ‘I’m an X Main’ last, would the game not improve dramatically?
Regardless.
Rein is not poorly designed. He’s a pivot or rally point of balance.
sure totally they are not seeing more playtime. its totally rein’s fault that the dps heroes arent seeing playtime and not your main brig that bought goats to a prominent spot
emphasis on you main btw.
I want maps to inform hero picks not dictate them.
If we ever get to the point where the maps are so restricting that you can guess an exact mirror comp on boths sides. Then that’s horrible game balance as well.
A meta where only one thing works is never good even if it’s dictated by maps

Your argument sounds more in favour of him being well designed and the difficulty lying in designing another main tank that meets up to his standards.
Orisa was an attempt to offer another option for a main tank, but her lack of movement doesn’t make her as flexible. Hammond is the only other tank we’ve received and he’s definitely an off-tank.
I think what you’re really saying is we need more main tanks, and hopefully, we’ll be getting one soon.
The problem with Reinhardt is that is the only tank that can block a Reinhardt Ultimate without a cooldown.
It’s rather problematic that the only good way to counter a hero, is to use the same hero.
