I can’t wait for 2/2/2. Mainly for the first reason listed, but there’s other perks, too.
Never be stuck as the only tank or only healer, ever again. Hallelujah!! Solo healing and solo tanking is a special brand of hell.
Get to go “hey I want to practice X”, and actually get to practice them. No huge interruptions because of having to fill all the time, no more sucky 3+dps team comps guaranteeing that you won’t have the space/heals/peels you need to practice.
Getting teammates who play their role at the same rank you play at, thanks to role-specific SR/MMR. No more going into a match where a teammate’s skill is two ranks below you, due to them filling a role they’re not comfortable with.
No more “Team Comp Chicken”, where everyone is weighing the benefits of winning vs the benefits of forsaking humanity and picking a 6th dps - while yelling at everyone else to swap off DPS, of course.
Far, far less “games lost at hero select”. They’ll still be possible, but even a 2 off healer, 2 off tank comp is better than the nightmare 4-5 dps comps that happen in the current “unlocked role” que.
The devs wold have way more creative freedom, both for future heroes and balancing current ones. There’s a ton of cool stuff they can’t do with the threat of cheesy role-stacking comps breathing down their neck.
This was never a problem unless you suck at both jobs.
Who practices in competitive?
Debatable. A lot of people will also think of losing as specific roles as inconsequential, because the MMR on the role they’re playing doesn’t matter to them. Say, a DPS main might not care for his support/tank SR.
This barely even happens.
2 tanks and 2 supports isn’t always the most effective tbh… Sure, in environments of incompetence it’s a good thing to have someone catching up your slack. But it’s absolutely not required to win otherwise.
I already get 222 when we need it, and we can adapt and change the comp as needed right now. Role queue gets rid of that, and makes it so flexing can no longer occur. There are positives and negatives to role queue, so I could take it or leave it. If they add it, cool, if they don’t, I’m still fine
Is to late for 2/2/2 also knowing blizzard they will implement this on quickplay without a leaver penalty, so when the trolls leave after 10 seconds the matchmaking will take 3-5 mins to fill up the role specially if is a tank/support role.
2/2/2 at this point is like this: You have a kid never had limits, rules or education on his house then when he is 15 the dude is already a smoker, drug addict, alchoolic, he already made pregnant a girl. His life is totally ruined and the “parents” want start to give him education sadly that will not work. Same thing is OW playerbase, they already are toxic & rotten 2/2/2 will fix nothing
Potentially fair, but unless you’re suggesting people are more likely to throw if 2-2-2 is implemented this won’t matter as much; even if someone cares or doesn’t about winning in a given role, their SR will reflect their relative skill in that role; you won’t be as screwed if someone decides to flex from one DPS to another as much as when a support main currently decides to go DPS in plat or diamond and can’t perform to that high of a level in the role.
With the current selection limits (ie none) you can’t have a tank or support hero who primarily operates via AoE debuff/DoT effects (ie reverse Lucio) without them being virtually unplayable because such a hero would synergize incredibly well with existing bunker comps and/or result in overpowering 3-4 DPS comps depending on the specific kit. Similarly it’s difficult to imagine a fast-moving, high-damage, slow-shooting DPS that could have survived in the past 3 metas, or been relevant. It will be easier if the devs only need to balance around one role primarily and then look at the spillover effects on other roles, versus now where they basically need to balance across all three roles simultaneously when creating a single new hero, lest they end up with another reality-warper like Brigitte.
Even if you can or should be able to solo-heal/solo-tank doesn’t make it fun. Having played both the solo tank and solo heal game as someone who enjoys main tank and main heal heroes I can tell you it’s super stressful. Having even 1 off-role in addition to w/e I’m playing makes it easier for me to play my hero and be more effective which in turn lets me have more fun.
Saying a given 2-2-2 team selection is suboptimal with the current lack of limits is an apples-to-oranges comparison. Most of the meta comps that have dominated since launch have been heavy in specific roles, either sidelining most of the roster or making an entire role irrelevant, and by definition means a given 2-2-2 team would likely underperform compared to them. I’ll also highlight that most of the meta comps have been very tank heavy and revolved around a very limited selection of heroes in a role that already has few options. Zarya, Rein, and D.va have consistently figured in most of the major comps, to the exclusion of the other tanks to greater or lesser degrees, whereas there’s been a fair amount of rotation through the different supports even in support heavy metas.
Rein and Winston have been in roughly the same amount of comps and in the meta for the same amount of time. Zarya has been equal with Rein, and so equal with Winston.
Hog has been underplayed.
Orisa and Hammond seem to have been getting a fairly normal amount of play given their later releases and higher competition for the role.
D.va’s the only real outlier in playtime because she’s been in the heavy tank comps and dive and some bunker.
I used to be strongly against 2-2-2, but then I got tired of one tank (usually me), 4 snipers and one other dps, one of the snipers being ana if we’re lucky enough to even have a healer. Otherwise, it’s just another dps.
Dps player queue times will be 4 times longer than tank or support queue times. Some will get patient and queue in an unwanted role just so thry can play rather than sit and wait
There is a Jeff interview that mentions DPS que times:
But Jeff prefaced the statement about dps que times with a disclaimer:
“This is not a fair number. This is not a fair statistic, because it assumes no behavioral change. And I believe that if there was a role que system in place, over time we would see a behavioral shift in the playerbase.”
Lmao ok so suddenly not being able to carry another 5 people at the same time for whole matches is considered being a ““bad player””, right??
And by the way, if that wasn’t enough, it’s pretty much a fact by now that solo tanking/healing is the most miserable role in the game by far and 99% of players would rather throw than serve any of these two roles.
Ooh, more people than you would ever imagine my friend.
Kiiinda true but still role - based MMR/SR provides some much - needed precision in the matchmaking system that is going to enhance the experience in a major way.
Lmao have you even played comp?
Yeah in 10% of the circumstances it may not be an optimal comp but it provides great stability, balance and a middle ground which fits the way the game was designed and balanced in the first place.
And that sentence about “picking someone else’s slack”, well we happen to be talking about Overwatch Competitive, so supporting/carrying your teammates I that way is pretty much a standard by now so a comp that accommodates that well is a great fit as a forced one.
