1 way to win, many ways to lose. This starts from the moment you get queued into a game.
Lose conditions:
Unbalanced skill levels (Masters/GM/Top 500 on 1 team vs Diamonds + Plats on the other)
1 Person trolling
1 Person AFK
1 Person Leaving
1 Person not playing seriously
1 Person under performing
1 Person not playing the meta
1 Person not playing their best heroes
etc.
Winning conditions:
Be better than the enemy team
On top of that, not to mention the shtty matchmaking and SR system basically makes every comp game pretty much a gamble. If you solo queue, you have 16.67% chance to win at most (100%/6). But as soon as 1 person does one of the losing conditions above, that 16.67% immediately goes to 0%. Even if all goes well you’re still facing against 83.33% of lose chance. 2 years and 10 seasons, yet this game still has the shttiest competitive system with little to no improvements.
We’re encouraged to swap to counter/synergize better, but with such a small roster and literally most heroes either contradict one another or they’re off meta and dont work well. Tell me then, swap to what? Counter what? That’s why 1 meta is always dominant. This game probably is better off without competitive because it really doesn’t work.
This isn’t how stats should be used, and it’s not how probability works. Also, you are forgetting that the other team has the same hurdles to overcome as yours does.
Maybe focus more on how you can improve and maximize your impact on the match, and worry less about what your team may or may not be doing.
The terrible matchmaking and SR system is at first already a big hurdle that is completely out of your control even if you try your best to win. Whether or not the statistics or maths are right, it is still a fact that it’s much easier to lose than to win. What can you possibly do when someone on your team decides to feed? Then an AFK in the next game? Then a leaver in the next? Then a troll in the next? These are all completely out of your control. You can be playing god like and still lose just because of these factors. This is why it’s such a gamble to play comp, because the odds are completely stacked against you and there is nothing you can do but to accept and keep playing even when you get a troll/leaver/afk/feeder, yet you still get punished just as hard as the person who did those things.
Edit: To add, in the current state (after 2 years and 10 seasons) Blizzard has yet to implement ANYTHING that helps make winning a bit more in control and favoured more towards teamwork, player skill and friendliness.
Of course it is easier to lose than to win. That doesn’t excuse the poor use of statistics in an attempt to mislead both yourself and others (I’ll return to this point).
One thing you can do to counter these things that is within your control is to form a group. The more players you have in your group that you trust not to do those things, the less likely you’ll have people on your team do those things.
That said, the probability of you being teamed with one of the above is nearly identical to the probability of your opponents being teamed with one of the above. Just like the matchmaker, this is something everyone has to deal with.
You can be playing like a god, not have any of the above factors come in to play, and still lose. Just because you’re playing like a god doesn’t mean you’re synergy with your team is any good. Nor does it mean you are necessarily playing better as a team than the opposing team is.
Overwatch is a game where simple, little, mistakes can have large ripple effects.
The odds are not completely stacked against you winning. This is where I’m going to return to the point about you using poorly applied statistics to mislead both others and yourself. You see the odds of winning as being 1 in 6. They aren’t.
By misusing stats, you are misleading yourself into the conclusion that the odds of winning are somehow unfairly stacked against you. The odds are roughly 1 in 2, or 50/50. This is what the matchmaker does… it tries to create matches where the probability of the match outcome is roughly 50/50 based on an assessment of your competence. And since your team is just as likely to have a leaver/troll/etc as the opposing team, the occurrence of such happening doesn’t really alter the probability of the match outcome in a significant way.
This is why misusing stats is problematic. You’ve mislead yourself into a faulty conclusion through poor understanding and application of how statistics should be used. To top that off, you’re now attempting to mislead others to that same place.
The core game mode is all about teamwork. The team that works together best is most often the winner of the match. Individual player skill is a big part of that, and an often overlooked skill is that of teamwork. You can be the best mechanical player in existence, but if you can’t work with a team it’s going to be rough going for you.
And I don’t know what friendliness has to do with winning matches. That’s just out of left-field. I don’t need to be friendly with my team in order to win. I just have to work well with them, try my best, and pay attention to my mistakes and correct them.
All of these things also apply to the opposing team. So… it is just as easy for them to lose as for your team to lose.
Your negative attitude, seeking out problems, doesn’t help you win. It’s wastes effort that brings you no closer to your goal. Look for solutions, that’s how you win.
