I feel like if there is two characters that should be renamed it would be reaper and wrecking ball. Not exactly renamed, but just call them by their actual lore names on the hero board. Its not a biggest deal, but personally I think Gabrielle Reyes sounds spooker then reaper due to how generic the name reaper is. Like imagine if we just called Mercy “Angel”. And wrecking ball. Whats wrong with the name Hammond? It fits the character so well already. The name Wrecking ball sounds less like a name and more of a noun.

But in the lore they don’t know it is Reyes, only a small number of Talon people do. So Reaper is better.
Wrecking Ball however, I kind of agree. Although in the lore again, his real identity is secret. The people of Junkertown don’t know who or what is in the Ball.

Point taken. Just like most people don’t know Sombra’s real name"If she even has one". I also do think that Junkrat and Roadhog sounds cooler then Jamison Fox and Mako Retulage. Still cool names though.
The name wrecking ball sounds like a stupid name that you would tell in one of those stupid unfunny jokes that everyone roles their eyes when they hear it. At least hammond sounds somewhat normal and not as stupid even though I personally prefer to call him the filthy rat.

I’d be down for Hammond to just be called Hammond. Not so sure about Reaper. Granted I’d like him to be called Reyes instead of Reaper in hero selection of any and all archive missions they have of him. (Please tell me OW2 will also feature archives missions of the past on top of current story ones). I mean, during Retribution he wasn’t Reaper yet. So why not call him Reyes there on the select screen? Pretty minor thing I know, but one I would appreciate.

Hammond has always been Hammond to Hammond fans. Dislike the adjective.
I’ve heard the main reason Wrecking Ball is called that and not Hammond is because then he’d get between Genji & Hanzo alphabetically.

As for the topic, I mean, realistically no one calls him Wrecking ball but lore wise he is know by that name. Also look at pretty much every other character in the game, most of them go by a codename rather than their given name.

Shorter names are more memorable and easier to call ingame too. What is more likely people to remember: Gabrielle Reyes or just Reaper?

Okay let’s clear this up…
Jeff Kaplan is on direct video about this character’s name. The character by lore does not recognize Hammond as his name as this was assigned to him by the researchers on HLC, he literally goes by “Wrecking Ball”, his moniker created at the Junkertown arena selected by him as his name. Hammond is his slave name. He refers to himself and goes simply by “Wrecking Ball”, kid you not, that is the lore.
To your point, at Junkertown he hid his identity to avoid possible capture, etc. and return to HLC, and the fact he would be hounded likely as a curiosity at JT if his exact nature as a mutated Hamster was known with an Omnic low-level AI interpreter/assistant.
I predict in the lore one day news will break that as the only one of his kind, he will be found dead after years of loneliness and depression hanging from a lamp cord in a hotel room.
