I play tanks 90% of the time. Within the tank role, it’s mainly one tank, with two others on occasion. Within DPS, it’s 1 main hero with one back up Within support, mainly just one, all the rest I suck with.
I ask this question because, as someone who has been playing this game for years, I realized last night just how many of these heroes do not appeal to me at all… you couldn’t pay me to play most of these heroes, and yet, I still find the game to be a lot of fun.
Is there anyone here who plays, or at least can play all the heroes and actually enjoys doing so?
Or maybe you’re someone who only played a few heroes but branched out and found you enjoy a lot of them? Maybe you tried to master as many as you could but changed your mind and settled for a few?

Honestly, if not for Widowmaker I probably wouldn’t play the game, period. Aside from her, I’ve only played like 3 other heroes, one of them being Ashe.

Zero tanks, Five DPS, All supports (except Brig)

Tank only comfortable with Zarya but will play JQ if needed (just don’t expect much).
DPS most consistent with Ashe, but will play Tracer or Mei as well (just don’t expect much).
Support can consistently perform well with Ana and Kiriko. Am decent with Mercy but unlikely I’d ever play her if Ana or Kiriko are available.
So, TLDR, 2 or 3 per role.

I play whatever I feel would be useful to my team. Sometimes that’s hard to figure out.
I can play everything. I lean more towards some characters when given the choice, but I have no problem switching off them when I get countered.

I try and find heroes that fit my mood, and my fatigue.
-
If I am tanking and want to be sweaty for wins. It will be Rein or Winston.
-
If the team is cohesive I will run D.VA.
-
if I am casual tanking and its a match that has no destiny for a Win: its Ball or Hog. because supports are not wanting to be healbots.
DPS:
-
Sombra or Junkrat for the Sweaty Wins.
-
Widow for Nostalgia Wins.
-
Tracer, Reaper or Genji for Casual play.
-
Mc-Cowboy, if I have watched a Western that day. Just because fan the hammer and “high noon”.
“Support”
-
Mercy. If I am too tired. and want to do good old fashion HEAL BOT.
-
Lucio if I really do think our Mercy Cares to focus only our tank and is trying hard. So I focus on the group’s Passive AOE HEals.
-
Brig, if I know I can help make space with a Rein and our Mercy is an absolute PRO at paying attention to HP meters.

I want to learn JQ so badly but I’m struggling to learn when I should/shouldn’t use her, which makes my team mates suffer unnecessarily😅

I play mainly 3 supports, but can flex to lifeweaver and baptiste without much issue.
I can survive on any other tank than doomfist.
I’m better at some than others but at least i understand how the tanks work. I play maybe 4 tanks properly.
Dps i don’t really play anymore since all the heroes i played well enjoy have been nerfed to not be very viable (Mei and reaper for example).
I’d love to be able to get value on other dps as well, but i just can’t. Sometimes i manage to make sombra, echo or bastion work, but from those i only really enjoy sombra. Mostly when shutting down snipers, that’s my only value as sombra.

Still baffles me in a game with heroes as diverse as OW and so many of them people would choose to only play one hero.

I play mainly support, and my roster falls into four categories:
Go to: Lucio, Moira, Baptiste, LW
Decent with: Ana, Brigitte, Illari
Need to work on, but can play: Kiriko, Zenyatta
Puts me to sleep: Mercy

I surprised myself lol, I didn’t think I’d end up like this, but I guess we like what we like haha
In a game as diverse as overwatch it especially makes sense people would only play one. Only that one appeals to them and they’re all pretty unique so nothing else does

Not many, TBH. I started playing Venture, but because I am not good enough (yet) I always end up switching to a hero I know better instead of keep trying
Tanks
- Orisa
- Ramattra
- Roadhog
- Sigma
- Zarya
However, I don’t like playing solo tank
DPS
- Ashe*
- Hanzo*
- Mei
- Torbjörn
- Soldier: 76**
- Sombra*
*I’m not as good as Mei or Torb with these heroes, but I don’t mind playing them.
**I know how to play him, but he is boring to me.
Supports
- Ana
- Illari*
- Kiriko
- Lúcio*
- Moira ← My main

*I underperform with these heroes. My aim isn’t good enough to play Illary effectively, and I haven’t played Lúcio since OW1
, but I loved him.
Even if I listed those heroes, I end up playing the one or two heroes I feel more comfortable with: Orisa and Roadhog; Mei and Torbjörn; Ana and Moira.

Probably like 75% of the heroes in each role. I have my favorites, but I can flex wherever needed. Not the best on all of them, but it got me to Masters, so I can at least handle myself.

I think the fact that there are so many heroes to choose from makes it feel that much more 'special’ when you find one you really click with and enjoy playing.
I play pretty much only Tracer, but for DPS I’ll also swap to Echo, Sojourn, Sombra, and very rarely Cree/Soldier. I don’t like playing Sojourn or Soldier and usually don’t like playing Cree either. Those picks are just to win games.
On Tank I flex pretty hard, alternating between all Dive Tanks and Zarya. On Support I also flex pretty hard, playing everyone but Lifeweaver consistently.

At my rank, on support, I can realistically play 3 heroes. Brig, Lucio, Moira. Any others is a throw. I don’t play enough of the other roles to have a good feel for my skill there.

I play only DPS and can play anyone.
This doesn’t mean I play well on all of them.
But often it works… bruh counterwatch…
I like tracer and genji least of all.

If you could only play 3dps for the rest of your overwatch career, which would you choose?
