Razer sound issues in OW2

What’s the problem?

Since I downloaded a few things (will explain below), my sound in Overwatch 2 is super prickly and awful, and it’s also resulting in major FPS drops (was a pretty solid 60, now I’m hovering around 45 but dropping to 20 when lots of things onscreen are happening).

It doesn’t happen with sound on YouTube videos or in World of Warcraft.

Why do you think this is happening?

Something to do with Overwatch’s inbuilt surround-sound system conflicting with something I just downloaded.

…What did you just download?

So my Razer Naga Chroma mouse cursor was playing up - it would click but no movement would register so it would freeze where it was. I had Razer Synapse 2 but online searching told me there was a Synapse 3, so I figured if I downloaded it it would give me a missing driver update.

At this point, the sound and framerate in Overwatch 2 were absolutely fine and had been since I started playing it yesterday for the first time.

I uninstalled Synapse 2 and downloaded Synapse 3. The Synapse 3 installation wizard also offered me a bunch of other apps I could download; I selected Razer Cortex and THX Spatial Audio as they seemed decent.

It downloaded Razer Synapse 3 and then THX Spatial Audio. While it was downloading the latter the sound through my headphones stopped for about 10 seconds; I assume this was due to an audio update taking place.

Midway through downloading Synapse 3, I decided I didn’t want Cortex after all so I cancelled the download while it was downloading it. Unfortunately this also caused it to cancel and uninstall all three modules (Synapse 3, THX and Cortex).

So I started again, this time only downloading the first two and not Cortex.

Once that was finished, I loaded up THX Spatial Audio, but saw it was a paid product and that I’d have to buy it, so I decided to uninstall it. So now I only had Synapse 3 installed.

I noticed however after doing this that a THX helper module was still available to run on startup, so I feel like it didn’t get uninstalled completely?

Anyway, Overwatch 2 has been screwed ever since.

What have I tried?

  • Disabled THX Helper module on startup and rebooted
  • Closed down Synapse 3 entirely
  • Uninstalled Synapse 3
  • Reinstalled Synapse 2
  • Rebooted again
  • Tried to adjust sound controls in Overwatch 2 but there aren’t really any
  • Troubleshooted sound via Windows troubleshooter tool
  • Went to ‘Add or Remove Programs’ and removed all Razer products except Synapse 2 (which as I say, has always played fine with OW and OW2). There were no THX apps to remove
  • Rebooted and tried OW2 again; still screwed
